Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"What we have found most valuable is that we have not lost stability in the program.""The best features of Amazon EC2 are its high performance and security.""EC2 has helped us to deploy various Microsoft applications efficiently. It has also facilitated our workstation operations.""The scalability and elasticity are helpful.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the ability to have standard operating systems along with the Windows, Linux operating systems, and their maintenance-free structure, which we prefer.""Amazon EC2 is highly scalable.""The solution offers good access policies.""EC2 provides a lot of flexibility. If you don't want to have a separate on-premise database, you can put it on the cloud with EC2. You can adjust the instance type according to your needs. You select a size and get a certain amount of specific memory, CPUs, etc. You set the redirect limit, and from there, you install the software, database servers, application servers, and whatever you want."

"AWS Batch's deployment was easy.""We can easily integrate AWS container images into the product.""There is one other feature in confirmation or call confirmation where you can have templates of what you want to do and just modify those to customize it to your needs. And these templates basically make it a lot easier for you to get started.""AWS Batch manages the execution of computing workload, including job scheduling, provisioning, and scaling."

Cons
"There should be enhanced accessibility from any standpoint. The accessibility should be increased, particularly in scenarios where accessing the software on the Azure platform from the cloud can be complex. Simplifying this process would be beneficial. There are too many steps involved.""They should fix the key pair name functionality and provide the ability to assign multiple key pair names to an EC2 instance. It is a key pair feature, and it provides you the ability to actually log into the server. It is basically like a password. In terms of new features, it should have the ability to increase and decrease the instance size based on certain times of the day. We should be able to do this without turning off the EC2 instance. Currently, you have to turn it off and then turn it back on. It should also have HTTPS or SSL integration.""Amazon EC2 could improve the console view. The ability to see the console view directly would be helpful, similar to what VMware has. Additionally, when the system is rebooting we are able to see a screenshot of the UI, but it would be a lot better if we could interact directly with the console level.""Lacks sufficient tools to help users minimize their costs.""I would like to see improvement in the information available up-front for users around tailoring the package to their actual requirements. At present it can take time to work with the on demand instance until you are used to what features are right for the user.""am concerned about the tool's data security.""Accessibility must be improved.""I think the pricing needs to be adjusted and better security."

More Amazon EC2 Cons →

"When we run a lot of batch jobs, the UI must show the history.""The solution should include better and seamless integration with other AWS services, like Amazon S3 data storage and EC2 compute resources.""AWS Batch needs to improve its documentation.""The main drawback to using AWS Batch would be the cost. It will be more expensive in some cases than using an HPC. It's more amenable to cases where you have spot requirements."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing appears to be cheap, however, it is extremely difficult in calculating what something will cost."
  • "It has helped to reduce costs with infrastructure."
  • "EC2 pricing is somewhat transparent, in that AWS provides pricing for all instance types. However, the number of pricing options can be confusing."
  • "For our usage, the cost is approximately $20,000 to $23,000 per month."
  • "There is a license required to use this solution and we pay on a monthly basis."
  • "The price is reasonable, but there is definitely an opportunity to lower it in instances which are of a higher configuration, because they have been typically used for the long term."
  • "Amazon EC2 has a pay-as-you-use cost model."
  • "The clients have found the billing of Amazon EC2 good, but the price could be less high. There is a monthly subscription to use the solution."

    Overview

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides secure, resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale cloud computing easier for developers.

Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides you with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon’s proven computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use. Amazon EC2 provides developers the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate them from common failure scenarios.

AWS Batch enables developers, scientists, and engineers to easily and efficiently run hundreds of thousands of batch computing jobs on AWS. AWS Batch dynamically provisions the optimal quantity and type of compute resources (e.g., CPU or memory optimized instances) based on the volume and specific resource requirements of the batch jobs submitted. With AWS Batch, there is no need to install and manage batch computing software or server clusters that you use to run your jobs, allowing you to focus on analyzing results and solving problems. AWS Batch plans, schedules, and executes your batch computing workloads across the full range of AWS compute services and features, such as Amazon EC2 and Spot Instances.
