We compared Cohesity DataProtect and Rubrik based on user reviews in five categories. We reviewed all of the data and you can find the conclusion below.
Features: Cohesity DataProtect offers instant recovery and built-in integration with Office 365 and Active Directory. Rubrik is praised for its automated policy enforcement and efficient ransomware detection. Cohesity DataProtect users have suggested enhancements to its user interface, rollback methodology, and cloud data recovery. Other pain points include file server capacity and legacy platform support. Rubrik could expand compatibility with open-source databases, improve documentation, and strengthen its ability to back up remote sites.
Service and Support: The customer service experiences for Cohesity DataProtect have been mostly positive, but some say the quality of Cohesity's support may differ depending on the region. Rubrik customers appreciate the support team's expertise and fast response.
Ease of Deployment: Most users consider the setup process for Cohesity DataProtect to be easy, although a few found it more complex than other products. Rubrik's setup is simple, and users say the support team was available to assist as needed.
Pricing: Cohesity's pricing is higher than its competitors, although some customers consider it affordable. Some users find Rubrik's pricing expensive, but many say it’s justified by its encryption and security features. Rubrik's license includes both software and hardware without any additional costs.
ROI: Cohesity DataProtect provides security against ransomware and efficient file retrieval. Rubrik provides peace of mind and some cost savings, but users say that quantifying the ROI is difficult.
Comparison Results: Cohesity is regarded as an affordable solution that offers instant recovery and superior ransomware protection. However, users say its customer service is inconsistent across regions, and its rollback methodology has room for improvement. Users like Rubrik’s advanced ransomware features, excellent support, and automated policy enforcement. However, some had issues with its remote backup abilities and high price tag.
"It is also very easy to determine which VMs are being backed up and which ones aren't. This is helpful to make sure nothing is being missed."
"Its flexibility is the most valuable. Being a cloud version, it has more flexibility, and it allows me to incorporate different workloads and consolidate all the data in one place. It has good high availability, and it is also easy to maintain."
"We are looking forward to the next release, so we can take advantage of the AHV backup for our Nutanix environment."
"The solution's SQL cloning is great, and its Instant Mount restoration of virtual machines is brilliant."
"The customer service and support are fast and professional."
"Cohesity customer service is the best that I have ever used. They are extremely fast in responding to cases, fixed all issues, and answered every question in a very timely manner."
"Instant volume mount and the SpanFS filesystem itself, which has great dedupe and compression across all of our backups."
"The enterprise search and instant restore are pretty valuable. Also, the Helios stuff is pretty good and the SAS engine for ransom malware detection."
"The most valuable feature is the Instant Recovery, where we can restore a VM or SQL database or any server or application, and have it up and running on their appliance within a few seconds."
"It has a good interface which is simple to navigate and utilize."
"Rubrik can also serve as a secondary host for emergency recoveries."
"The fact that the API is so available to us with the playground — there's an internal and public playground — is also valuable. We can write API calls — and although I'm sure there's a way we could hurt the data — we write those calls with a lot of certainty that we won't be destroying anything. We write these API calls using really easy mechanisms and generate automation a lot faster."
"The web-based approach is the most valuable feature."
"It works with VMware and Hyper-V without agent installation."
"The archiving, off-of-box, is awesome. It lets you put your data where you want it and gives you the peace of mind of having more than one copy of it. And it's smart about the way that it does the archiving. It doesn't just copy one-for-one. It does all of its processing of the deduplication and compression before it sends it off to the archive, which helps with our cloud costs."
"Live Mount is where we do the majority of our big recoveries, unless it is a file recovery. A file recovery takes a few minutes to restore to where the file in the event a file was accidentally deleted by a user, etc. There has been at least a 90 percent reduction in recovery time based on our previous solution, from the need to recover something to when it's actually recovered went from hours to minutes."
"Quality testing of upgrades should be somewhat improved."
"We have Oracle databases running on Linux servers in our environment and we have found the Oracle backups were quite complex to setup."
"When a new release is launched, there may be some bugs that need to be addressed by the developers. However, they promptly resolve these issues, and the software runs smoothly once again."
"I'd like to be able to pause a backup while it's running and have it resume when I tell it to resume."
"For Oracle DBs, we have observed a few bugs. This can be done better."
"The error handling could be improved."
"They could always keep up with continuous interface refinements."
"The support team sometimes takes a long time to resolve issues, although, in our experience, these have been specific things like SQL blobs."
"Rubrik can only leverage cloud storage for archiving and has no cloud failover."
"Looking at how the data is broken down, we can see the total story, but sometimes it's difficult to see how big a particular snapshot is. Across 90 days of snapshots, which one is a particularly large one? Looking at the data holistically could be a lot easier."
"There are some features to improve on in Rubrik. For instance, they should have a tool where we can integrate with our SAP HANA. Directly from the HANA studio, we should be able to do a backup. That's what I'm looking forward to in the future."
"The solution could improve by having fewer VM Stuns."
"Rubrik is expensive."
"Capacity reports could definitely be improved. It's hard to determine what is using the space and why. For instance, you can see that some host is using 2 TB on the Rubrik node and the disk space on that host is 400 GBs. It's hard to explain how there can be 2 TBs of data on local storage when nothing has changed on the host for the past three days."
"Global management of multiple systems is lacking, as is reporting across multiple installed units."
"Pricing is something that needs to be considered for improvement."
