We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature of Dell PowerScale (Isilon) is all the capabilities together.""This is the best platform that we could have for storage utilization. It is affordable and scalable. At the end of the day, it's something that we find very easy to use.""Dell PowerScale is a scalable solution. It allows non-disruptive upgrades and maintenance of the system.""Its scalability has been huge for us.""The solution provides massive performance, scalability, efficiency, and ease of management.""The flexibility and the user-friendly interface are the most valuable features.""Its most valuable feature is the DR capabilities replication.""The fact that we were able to set it up, use it, and, for the most part, didn't have to worry about it after we had it set up has been valuable."

"It gave us a platform which could clearly arrange all our files and volumes.""NetApp has its own dedicated operating system, so it will not be affected by any wireless piggybacking or malware. That's the beauty of NetApp's operating system.""NetApp is faster than other storage brands.""Very stable and very scalable.""NetApp has really added a lot of features over the years to improve the product and performance. They can do things now like control ingress. They can control egress.""The most valuable feature is integration.""At the moment, we are extensively using SnapMirror.""The solution scales well."

Cons
"There is room for improvement with the updates. It can take a significant amount of time to do a major OS update. However, even though it takes multiple reboots, the cluster stays up. If we want to apply a newer version of the OS, we have to roll back some of the patches so that we can upgrade. It requires a few reboots just to do that. The cluster doesn't come down, everything is still running, but it's time-consuming, at times.""Some improvements to the NFS support would be of interest to us.""We used to have a chat feature available on the support site. It's not available to us anymore.""If they integrated some functions, as they have on Data Domain with a cyber recovery vault, it would be ideal.""Isilon has limitations on the number of files that can be generated.""I'd like to see more Iceland products in the cloud so that we can port our data into different environments if needed. I would also like to see a virtual appliance or software-defined Iceland product.""Additional metadata reporting would be great. We have to use a separate tool to report on that. We would like to view the age of data and how long it has been since someone has accessed a file.""The product’s expansion capacity, pricing clarity, and ease of use need improvement."

More Dell PowerScale (Isilon) Cons →

"The users find the new version's GUI complicated to use.""It is not the fastest storage solution.""I would like to see the GUI management simplified in the next release.""There is room for improvement in the support. It has been a problem for our team.""I think that it should work better with Microsoft solutions, more integrated with Microsoft. We also need integrated NAS and block storage.""I'm not sure how easy it is to use on the cloud versus on-prem. If they have different user experiences, they should work to make the two as similar as possible to make it easy for a user to understand both even if they only deal mainly with one.""They need a little more technical people in Akola. Most of the NetApp people are in Bangalore, Mumbai, or Delhi, but there are very few in Akola. I think NetApp has few technicians in Akola because they mostly rely on partners to service this area.""There may actually be so many features that the end-user gets lost in the volume."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The solution is expensive; it is not the cheapest solution out there. If you look at it from a total cost of ownership perspective, then it is a very compelling solution. However, if you're looking at just dollar per terabyte and not looking at the big picture, then you could be distracted by the price. It is not an amazing price, but it's pretty good. It is also very good when you consider the total cost of ownership and ease of management."
  • "The pricing is expensive, but I think it's a fair value because it does manage itself. It definitely is much simpler than any of the other scale-out storage platforms that we've looked at in the past."
  • "The platform is not cheap. However, on the software side, you can choose what you want license. So, you can start your licensing with the features that you need, then after buying the platform add some other features."
  • "The only drawback for us is that it's a large upfront investment. This was a huge decision for a startup company to make. It took a bit for us to get over the line on it, but we have not regretted it."
  • "We paid an additional fee to have Dell's ProDeploy Plus team implement it."
  • "Price was also a significant factor in our decision to go with PowerScale. The team at EMC, now Dell EMC, came through with a highly competitive offer that tipped the scales towards their solution. There was only one other solution around the same price point, but it could not match PowerScale on features. That other solution is no longer on the market."
  • "Pricing for this solution is reasonable."
  • "This solution is priced slightly higher than others on the market but does offer good quality. With this solution's data reduction and compression, we were able to purchase less. Costs have dropped because of the data rate of compression and deduplication."

  • "We negotiate whatever deal we can get on the type of storage that it is, but it's totally under our control,."
  • "The price could be lower."
  • "The price of NetApp Private Storage is similar to other solutions. There is typically an annual license required for this solution."
  • "In general, I am pleased with the pricing, though it is a little high."
  • "NetApp Private Storage is cheaper here in India compared to other solutions, such as Dell."
  • "It is an expensive solution."
  • "The product is costly."

    Reviews from Real Users

Dell EMC PowerScale storage stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its scalability capabilities and its user-friendly centralized management system.

Rachel B., a chief operations officer & acting CFO at Like a Photon, writes, "PowerScale allows us to manage storage without managing RAID groups or migrating volumes between controllers. It has really simplified things. We're not having to worry about the underlying infrastructure. That takes care of itself. We just worry about the data. It's really easy for deploying and managing storage at the petabyte scale."

Keith B., the director of IT at NatureFresh Farms, writes, "The single pane of glass for both IT and for the end-user is a valuable feature. On the IT side, I can actually control where things are stored, whether something is stored on solid-state drives or spinning drives... The single pane of glass makes it very easy to use and very easy to understand. We started at 100 terabytes, and we moved to 250 and it still feels like the exact same system and we're able to move data as needed."

NetApp Private Storage (NPS) for Cloud is a family of enterprise storage solutions that lets you use multiple industry-leading clouds and maintain complete control over your data on dedicated storage systems from NetApp.
