Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It has the best storage capacity.""FreeNAS is much simpler and easier to use than other solutions, but we don't have the complete range of features that come with the full version.""The ease of use of the 'jail', the management of backups, and copies to easily create test and pre-production scenarios have speeded up the development and distribution of business apps.""What I like about it is that I can work on it from any computer or any device. The initial setup is very simple. The setup wizard is really helpful.""The solution has been very stable so far.""It integrates well into either Windows or Linux environments.""Its stability is the most valuable. It is reliable, and we don't have to worry too much about it."

"IBM FlashSystem is flexible, quick, and has a solid design.""The speed, performance, and stability are the best features of IBM FlashSystem.""The performance of the All-Flash System is very good. There is more enhanced performance and data production in the solution, which I appreciate.""One of the most valuable features is that it's very easy to use and configure. It used to be more difficult, but now it's almost flawless.""The Flash core models offer amazing performance.""The most valuable feature is that is supports a high IOPS rate.""The solution is very easy to configure and use.""Ability to manage third-party arrays and virtualise them: One screen to control multiple arrays. Simplified administration."

Cons
"They can improve the integration with PSA systems. This functionality could be better.""FreeNAS should be better prepared for clustering.""The support for S3 needs to be improved.""The one thing that I find difficult to do which is very time-consuming is that I like to have a backup of the important files.""If you find the documentation, it is always incomplete and fragmented.""They should include clustering for the solution.""The latest version of the dashboard doesn't work as good as the previous version."

"The solution is quite expensive. That's one of the downsides to using it.""Events/log analysis tools.""They can improve its initial configuration. The initial configuration is currently very difficult. There are multiple choices or alternative ways to configure based on the use case and what you are targeting out of the device, that is, more capacity or more performance. These multiple alternatives cause a lot of confusion. They should increase the processing part of the nodes. Currently, you can cluster up to eight nodes. From my experience and the workload that I am facing in my environment currently, I would like to see either a bigger or stronger node or a larger number of nodes that can be clustered together. We formally communicated to them that we need to see either this or that, and they are working on something.""Cloud file sharing is an area that needs improvement.""We use some open-source tools for monitoring, such as Grafana and it should be bundled along with IBM FlashSystem.""I think the only thing the developers can look at, is that it is limited to 25 gigabytes currently. In the next release they might want to increase that.""Sometimes the performance is effective but it gets resolved in the process.""The data reduction pool feature sucks and is not recommended for use with heavy workloads."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We use the free version of the program."
  • "For our configuration, we pay a little bit less than €10,000 ($12,000 USD) per year."
  • "Its price is okay. It suits our needs."
  • "Its licensing cost is based on the hardware capacity."

  • "Pricing can be considered as per market competition."
  • "The total storage capacity vs price is still quite high for the IBM Flash Array."
  • "It pays to go back and get the best price you can from your supplier. The first offer is not always at the best discount."
  • "Regarding licensing make sure you add at least three years software maintenance from IBM at the beginning, because you will not be able to download firmware updates or any fixes/patches without this."
  • "IBM V7000 has a new license and price structure which provides intuitive licensing based on the functions customers wish to enable and use the most."
  • "The pricing has been very competitive for the last few years. IBM got to the point where they changed the pricing model and we feel very comfortable with the pricing. It's very competitive. Over the last two years, IBM has been coming up with all kinds of interesting promos, especially for the SMB systems. That makes it very competitive price-wise and in terms of performance..."
  • "For a yearly license, it is about $100,000. There are no additional costs. The entire system is included."
  • "The integration is already included in the license cost of IBM FlashSystem. The integration is very easy. You get the IBM storage core with all software, firmware, and upgrades. EMC provides the features in the box, but they are not free for customers. There is a licensing cost for features. We have yearly licensing, but IBM has also provided a new option where you pay as you go. They provide a big box, and I pay, for example, for 10 terabytes. If I exceed 10 terabytes, IBM will charge for the new storage after 10 terabytes. It is a good opportunity in the market for using the storage as a cloud and paying as you go."

    Overview
FreeNAS is an operating system that can be installed on virtually any hardware platform to share data over a network. FreeNAS is the simplest way to create a centralized and easily accessible place for your data. Use FreeNAS with ZFS to protect, store, backup, all of your data. FreeNAS is used everywhere, for the home, small business, and the enterprise.

IBM FlashSystem products are enterprise computer data storage systems that store data on flash memory chips. Unlike storage systems that use standard solid-state drives, IBM FlashSystem products incorporate custom hardware based on technology from the 2012 acquisition of Texas Memory Systems. This hardware provides performance, reliability, and efficiency benefits versus competitive offerings.
