We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable features of HPE Superdome X are speed, performance, and resilience.""SDX gave us a very large RAM and we need that for the large-scale graph-handling applications.""Superdome X is a system that can compete in terms of performance and uptime, but it's now standard. That is the great value. There are competitors like IBM, for example, but IBM has a propietary operating system. With Superdome X, you have a system that can run Windows, Red Hat, or VMware, but in a mission critical server.""This product is very reliable.""I like the robustness of the machine. Similar performance could likely be achieved with other configurations, but this machine is very stable.""One of the really cool things about Superdome is, depending on the model you choose, you can put 8-16 blades in it.""We've got a few of them, because we needed some really large machines. So far, they've been working pretty good."

"I love the satellite architecture for the Virtual Connect. I think this is great. I love the storage drawer, which you can present volumes to any compute node within the same frame.""It's more composable, you can use storage as well as compute blades. So maybe it's more versatile compared to the traditional blade systems.""The scalability is great.""I believe, compared to the C7000, it delivers a significant amount of innovation and flexibility,""The solution has decreased the deployment time for a new blade, saving us three hours.""The composable infrastructure allows us to build our own server profiles, then build up the infrastructure that we need from compute modules.""The hyper-converged infrastructure where everything is stateless is valuable. Basically, you have your compute storage and networking management.""Cable management is a big feature, in addition to time to deployment. We can buy a new server and have it up and running very quickly."

Cons
"In this specific model, it could be beneficial to have a server configuration similar to Cisco, like the kind offered in HPE Superdome Flex X280. The ability to separate the chassis is important because we are forced to use two chassis even with lower loads. So introducing more flexibility in the Superdome environment would be helpful.""What would make it better from my point of view is if HPE spent more time on testing with the actual built-in Red Hat Linux drivers, as opposed to always trying to say, "Use our driver."""HPE Superdome X can improve by adding a lot of cloud capabilities to allow this solution to be cloud-ready in case the customer wants to move it to the cloud.""I'd like to see the onboarding of some storage class memory to really expand the already very large RAM, into something that could be even much bigger.""It would be helpful if you could do the maintenance completely online.""I know we support Windows and I think it's Red Hat, and I'd like to see more OSs supported."

More HPE Superdome X Cons →

"The lowest echelon of HPE technical support is sadly uninformed, unknowledgeable, and dependent on wrote scripts. They won't answer a question without going through their script. It's not like you're actually talking to somebody who has any depth or time using any of the equipment.""You can always improve some things.""ICMs could be better in this model. When you look at its competitors, the most critical point is the throughput. HPE is the best with the ICM module, which is an interconnect module that connects the servers of the frames to the LAN and SAN. HPE Synergy should also support the latest processors provided by Intel.""The cost is quite high.""The deployment time of a system through OneView is pretty slow, but apparently that's being addressed in an upcoming update.""Technical support for this solution has a very good initial response; however, escalation takes time, and most of the time the first level of support cannot solve your case.""Because we're using 2012, we're having issues making templates.""I'd get the firmware to be a little more secure and a little more streamlined."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "There is a very expensive one-time cost with no licensing fees."
  • "The pricing is not very cheap. I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten, with one being very inexpensive, and ten being very expensive."

  • "The Nutanix platform came in a little more expensive than the Synergy."
  • "The solution has reduced our IT infrastructure costs because we have had to buy less services than we used to."
  • "In our whole environment, the cost is in the millions. On this particular chassis, the annual cost is 12 blades times approximately $40,000."
  • "The biggest cost is the VMware licensing."
  • "We do a biannual renewal. I know how much that renewal is, but I don't know how much it breaks down to be just Synergy, since we have our VMware, all of our physical equipment, etc. all rolled up into one renewal, which is a little over $300,000 every two years. However, only a subset of that is the Synergy product."
  • "There was at least about a 20 percent savings in cost over our purchase based on the purchase price of the compute modules themselves versus what we've had to pay before. It was significantly less."
  • "Synergy has lowered our total cost of ownership significantly. I would say ballpark around 25 percent, maybe more."
  • "We bought everything outright to start with. We don't do much consumption-based stuff."
