We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We have not encountered any major challenges with replication. We were able to achieve near-real-time replication. Also, with the switchover failover, we were not getting any technical issues. It's a pretty stable product.""Snapshot and Data Guard Manager are awesome features.""One of the most valuable features is real-time replication. The version we're using is reliable and easy to deploy.""Oracle Data Guard is scalable. I rate it a ten out of ten.""The solution is quite stable. We haven't experienced any bugs, glitches, or crashes. We find it to be quite reliable.""We chose this solution for the availability of the databases. We can't afford Oracle Grid, this is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive.""Another valuable feature is the possibility of backing up the database from the standby database instead of the primary database, to avoid backup process overhead in the primary system.""The most valuable feature is the application or promotional code used in the production protocol to transfer data to the secondary database, situated on the DR site."

"The most useful feature is the one-click recovery.""I like this product because it is easy to use.""Quorum OnQ has a good ransomware protection feature, and customer service and support were very good.""It does automated tests to the systems to make sure that you could spin them up if you needed to. And if something doesn't come back up in those tests, we get a notification saying the system didn't come back up.""The change in the way that Quorum processes data has made a tremendous improvement in backup and replication times. While the familiar interface remains, the underpinnings have been finely tuned and the speed is incredible. My large Exchange Server went from 5- to 6-hour backups down to 22 minutes.""The biggest feature is being able to do a file recovery to the original server. That is extremely useful and has saved us a few times when we've had ransomware. In some of those cases, people's computers were locked down by viruses which spread to things they had access to, including server shares. But we were easily able to just restore to four hours prior, instead of a day or two or more ago.""The most valuable feature is spinning up a ready-to-go VM in a test or production environment that is based on a backup stored on the Quorum device.""From a disaster-recovery point of view, one of the things I really like is that I can test the virtual copy of the physical server on a test network and compare the servers side-by-side, without interfering with the production network. So I can see and make sure that the latest copy of the server is the physical copy of the server, without interfering with production."

Cons
"For every standby server you have, you must pay a licensing fee, which is the main disadvantage.""The implementation is complex for anyone who's jumping into it without any experience. It's all command-line driven implementations. For some, that's a turn-off.""For Italian medium-sized companies, the main challenge lies in the cost associated with licenses.""A significant improvement for Oracle Data Guard would be enabling the disaster recovery site to handle read and write operations, not just data storage.""The database administration needs improvement. With Oracle, we have a lot of features for administrating data, but it might be too many. It needs to be simplified. It should be automated. Looking at Enterprise Manager, there are too many KPIs in place.""It is a very useful administrative IT tool. It saves on costs.""The predominant issue lies in the communication link between the secondary and primary databases.""The pricing of the solution is quite high. They should do what they can to bring it down so that it is more reasonable for customers like us."

"Lacks compatibility in terms of supporting other OS.""It feels to me like it's going to be a little bit more work than I originally anticipated when upgrading the appliance. I haven't done that yet so I can't speak from true experience, but I went through the project plan and it feels to me like there's quite a number of pieces and components and things that have to be done. Quorum is going to manage the rollout, but in starting the initial conversation there were a lot of unanswered questions""Quorum OnQ's user interface is not very attractive and should be made more attractive.""The price of Quorum OnQ could be improved. We were exploring the product in terms of having a partnership with the distributor so that we could operate as a service, but for our own use, within the company, we couldn't justify the price unless the servers would become an option later on. The upfront cost of purchasing a license for the hardware is quite steep.""The user interface needs to be improved.""We found that some of the live SQL databases we were backing up would be inconsistent when we would restore them.""It would be beneficial if file culling could be more granular.""There seems to be a lack of technicians. Sometimes they are very busy and I don't hear back for a day or two. The technicians they have are great. They are fantastic, but it seems difficult, at times, to get in contact with anyone."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Oracle Data Guard is a feature available only in Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, and is available for extra cost."
  • "This is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive than Oracle Grid."
  • "If you want to have everything automated and done smoothly, you have to add additional licenses."
  • "It is not a cheap product, but if you look at the price, features, availability, scalability, and maturity, it is a very good product."
  • "The cost is expensive."
  • "The cost of the Oracle license will depend on the negotiations with Oracle."
  • "It's a cost-effective solution."
  • "The licensing cost is significantly high."

  • "We have never questioned whether it is worth it because it so obviously is a great value."
  • "When we first got the Quorum the licensing was different."
  • "The cost is higher than other software and services, but it is an absolute must-have."
  • "The total for our current solution's licensing is about $14,000 for 12 servers for three years."
  • "The pricing is about $1,400 a month. It's a little bit on the higher side. But it's one of those situations where time is valuable for me. So if it costs a little bit more money for me to have a solution that just works and requires less of my day-to-day management, I'm willing to pay a little bit more."
  • "The initial expenditure for us was a little under $40,000 for the recent renewal. For the first three years after that, other than electricity, there's no cost. After that, their support contract has to be renewed annually. We spent close to $6,000, between the two offices, for support."
  • "When we quote the price of Quorum to customers, they find it expensive."
  • "The upfront cost of purchasing a license for the hardware is quite steep."
