Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is user friendly, and has all the features you need.""The notable features that I have found most valuable are that it includes the antivirus, and also IPS, and even SD-WAN.""The reporting you receive out of this appliance is excellent. You will not need an external management system.""The most valuable feature is the interface, which is very user friendly. We are utilizing most of the features, like content filtering. The firewall is powerful.""FortiGate firewalls are easy to manage through a user-friendly web interface. They also have advanced features like DDoS and DLP. However, I wouldn't recommend enabling all of these features on one device because it can cause performance issues.""Their proxy-based inspection is responsive and secure.""FortiGate is on the cheaper end, and it offers good value.""We use a southern institution that's audited for IT security and the reporting that automatically comes off the unit makes it much easier to meet compliance standards and makes it easier as far as the amount of time that has to be spent to compile that information. If you get your reporting set up correctly when you initially set it up, you just select the one you want and hit print. The auditing trail on it is the best feature."

"Sangfor has the best capabilities for securing connections, securing web browsers, securing servers, and general threat protection.""Sangfor NGAF works accordingly with our customers. The solution has good performance, easy to use, and integrates well with the endpoints.""Particularly good in the DPI where we can inspect inbound and outbound traffic.""I think Sangfor NGAF is more valuable than Cisco products because of its simplicity and ease of management. If I compare it with Palo Alto and Cisco, both are quite complex products. And if I compare it with FortiGate firewalls from Fortinet, I have also used all these products. Fortinet and Sangfor NGAF are similar products because the applications behind the application and policy layers are almost identical.""SSL VPN is the best feature.""It seems to be a durable, stable product.""The price versus value is good because the solution is less expensive than Sophos, Fortinet, or SonicWall.""The built-in features function as intended, providing exceptional value."

More Sangfor NGAF Pros →

"The most valuable feature is ransomware protection.""They are all good, but most-used are Network Protection and Web Filtering.""Sophos SG UTM had all the basic functionality that you needed. It is user-friendly and easy to manage for any integrator.""The intrusion prevention is great, and I like dual virus scanning on the network layer because we scan it through Avira and Sophos. Web filtering is also a fantastic option for clients who want to really lock down internet access.""The initial setup has been fine.""Sophos UTM has a good user interface and granular security controls.""The most valuable features of the solution are application filtering and web filtering.""Stability-wise, I rate this solution a ten out of ten...Scalability-wise, I rate this solution a ten out of ten."

Cons
"There could be more integration between the logging and analytical platforms to make it more seamless and integrated.""To some degree, it's almost a question as to why some of this stuff isn't simpler. For example, for an AP deployment, while it's integrated, the number of steps that you have to go through in order to get the AP up, seems like a lot.""The firewall engine is not so strong as of now, in my opinion... My second concern is that, while they have Zero-day vulnerability and anti-malware features, the threat engine needs to be strengthened, its efficiency can be increased.""MTBF: Hardware failure is more common when compared to SonicWall or Cisco ASA.""It is very expensive, and their support is not very good. I hope that their technical support will be better in the future.""The performance could be a bit better. Right now, I find it to be lacking. Having good performance is very important for our work.""A couple of things I've seen that need improvement, especially in terms of a hard coding. The driver-level active moment really is out-of-the-box and we have to have contact the customer support and sometimes it is difficult to resolve.""I would like to see improvements in the product's application rules."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"An area of improvement for Sangfor NGAF could be in the field of reporting and logging.""Lacks consistency in terms of filtering certain websites and applications.""Sangfor has recently increased their prices.""The firewall system needs gradual improvements because there are more threats and challenges every day.""I would be happy if Sangfor developed a firewall designed specifically for home use, as well as for small businesses such as clinics and so on. A household version of the Sangfor firewall for your personal computer or laptop would be ideal, in my opinion.""The GUI needs to be improved, lacks logic in some areas.""An area for improvement would be the number of ports defined on the box. In the next release, I would like them to develop their provisioning stage of enrolling end devices.""Occasional issues with breaches which are dealt with expediently."

More Sangfor NGAF Cons →

"I would like to see the SD-WAN feature improved.""The only time we face a problem or issues is when we place a ticket. We have found that response is very slow.""I didn't like it much. It suits only small businesses. It isn't scalable and reliable. There is a very critical issue with the power supply.""The initial setup may be difficult for those not familiar with the product.""Sophos UTM's firewall is a bit weak, and some of its features lack depth compared to other products like F5.""Email spam filtering only works if you have an on-prem Exchange server. It doesn't interface with Office 365 like the XG model. That would be one feature that they could improve. They're not going to do it because they're trying to push us all to XG.""The solution could be improved by adding cloud soundboxing.""We need to speed up the support."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It costs about 8 to 10 thousand dollars per year for 500 users, standard licensing fees included."
  • "Sangfor is cheaper than competing vendors."
  • "The price is unmatcheable."
  • "When it comes to the price of firewall solutions, Sangfor NGAF takes the cake."
  • "Sangfor NGAF price is reasonable and there is an annual license. However, the maintenance cost can be a bit high."
  • "For four to five physical appliances for a licensed firewall, it costs approximately $4,000."
  • "The price could be more competitive."
  • "The license of Sangfor NGAF can be purchased at different interval lengths, such as annually or three years. They offer a range of packages to choose from, such as combo or hybrid packages. We are using the complete solution package which includes IM, NGF and SSL VPN, and WAF."
  • More Sangfor NGAF Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The licensing model is very straightforward, it's a bit pricey, but for what you get, it's well worth it."
  • "If you can afford it, go for a small Check Point, as it is easier to manage."
  • "Unless you are in the United States, or you have to use Sophos, you can't contact Sophos directly. You have to use a third-party company, and they all have different ways of how they explain their licensing."
  • "Go to a vendor and let them assess your needs so you can get a right-sized device."
  • "Sophos offers free training when selling their products from within the partner portal."
  • "I would recommend to follow Sophos’ sizing guidelines for choosing which license and model to use. Sophos has their own way of going about this and supplies partners with all the information required. If you follow their documentation and guidelines, there should be zero questions about licensing and sizing."
  • "For under 50 users, MSP licensing is profitable."
  • "In the case of a software/virtual appliance subscription, you pay by protecting user/IP addresses. You can do this to as much hardware resources as you like."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application. Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the Sophos UTM solution.

PeerSpot user Dana B., Network Administrator at a manufacturing company, says “The web and email filtering are the two biggest and most valuable aspects of the solution for us. The solution overall has just been a good, cost-effective solution for us. The solution offers a lot of functionality. The solution scales well. We've found the technical support to be helpful. The stability and performance are quite good.”

A Technical Director at a security firm mentions, "Sophos SG UTM had all the basic functionality that you needed. It is user-friendly and easy to manage for any integrator."

Marek M., Senior Network Engineer at a computer software company, comments, “Sophos UTM is the simplest of these products to set up. If you follow the instructions using the wizard, which is just a few steps, then you will have a firewall to protect you and your customer.”

A Software Sales Manager at a tech services company explains, “The overall visibility of the console is what I find most valuable, plus it's very user-friendly. It can be integrated with other solutions such as SOAR, SIEM, etc., even when you have an existing firewall. I really like that the console can be integrated. You'll see everything on the same window, and the single window feature of the machine is so good. These are the features I really like.”

James D., IT Manager at Manual Workers Union, states, “The fact that it's on the cloud means we don't have to administer it on our network or deal with a physical machine, which saves us money. The solution has many great features. From the console, we can start different scannings on different machines. We enjoy the centralized reporting part of it. The initial setup is simple. We enjoy its general stability. The solution can scale. So far, the solution has been problem-free.”
