Pros
"Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnect has high availability.""I really love the auto-tunnel creation feature.""The initial setup is very easy and not confusing.""The most valuable feature of Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnect is the boost.""First and foremost, it enables the customer to deploy high availability connections. This kind of solution enables them to deploy these HA connections for policies mostly automatically. It's a more automated approach than with other vendors.""The file and data reduction capabilities are very good. Without it, we have a great deal of network congestion.""At the moment, for us, it is a very good solution because it has all the features we need and it is not so expensive.""It is a scalable solution."

Also, it protects our NEtWare from viruses and malware.""In terms of security, we have not experienced any security flaws or loopholes, and it has proven to be quite stable.""Offers good security and filtering.""FortiGate firewalls are easy to manage through a user-friendly web interface. They also have advanced features like DDoS and DLP. However, I wouldn't recommend enabling all of these features on one device because it can cause performance issues.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the ease of use and the UI. It has always provided me with what I needed. I have no need for additional costs that other solutions have, such as Sophos.""What I like the most is the configuration and that it's simple, and straightforward to maintain.""The most valuable features of the solution are SD-WAN, filtering testing applications, web filtering, and the new VPN.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the different types of profiling. Cons
"More technical sessions should be offered for deploying the solution.""The support, which is the direct support from Aruba, has shortcomings and needs to be improved.""If compared with Cisco, then Aruba's pricing is very aggressive.""This solution is suitable for small to medium-sized companies. If we have large-sized companies it is better to use Cisco or Palo Alto.""They have to implement more security with it. The security, mainly their firewall functions, have to be included in the firewall features.""In future releases, I would like to see security features, so Aruba might need some firewalls, like other vendors.""Their WAN optimization in terms of wireless connectivity doesn't have a very good cellular capability.""The support from Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnect has declined since Aruba acquired them. The knowledge and speed of the agents could improve."

"Fortinet FortiGate could improve by adding enhancements to FortiMail, FortiSOAR, and FortiDeceptor.""It is very expensive, and their support is not very good. I hope that their technical support will be better in the future.""The support structure needs to be improved because every time we contact them, there is a delay in the response.""The pricing could be reduced or include the first year warranty.""Fortinet FortiGate could improve the user interface. There should be more functionality and options through the GUI.""The solution lacks multi-language support.""We would like to see an upgrade to the VPN feature, we are using the VPN from outside of our office and there is a limitation to 10 connections, more connections would be suitable.""FortiGate support could do some improvements on their IPv6 configuration. Right now it's still in the very early stage for utilizing in an enterprise level network environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice

  • "You typically will license the hardware and you license the software to access the hardware capabilities. The price will range anywhere from a hundred to $300 a month. There are no additional costs."
  • "The licensing fees depend on the bandwidth. As an example of what we charge our customers, for 100MB without Boost, the price is approximately $2,000. That includes the licensing and the unit."
  • "The pricing for this product is good."
  • "The license could improve for Silver Peak VX."
  • "The price of Silver Peak VX is expensive compared to competitors. There are licenses, renewals, and support that need to be paid."

  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."

  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application. Fortinet: If it… Read more →
