Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Active-active work mode leads to true redundancy of storage and allows us to distribute the load between multiple nodes.""StarWind vSAN is a great solution to create a redundant two-node-only Hyper-V cluster, both for domain or workgroup scenarios.""We are able to do maintenance by bringing down one node at a time, rather than having to schedule a complete shutdown.""User friendly interface and straight forward implementation.""StarWind Virtual SAN is a highly flexible solution, as it can be deployed on physical servers or on top of virtual machines running on hypervisors such as VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.""The failover redundancy is why we bought this product and it has never let us down.""We have been able to use more on-prem hardware to reduce cost and also use old disks that we do not trust enough for ordinary RAID or usage.""You can build cheap, reliable, replicated virtual machines clusters using simple servers with an all flash disk or SAS\SATA hybrid tiered by performance storage."

"The support is highly responsive.""The support team responds quickly.""We've had no issues with scaling the solution.""It has reduced downtime. Before, on our previous solution, we used to have downtime on some of the servers because of the sort of convention. But currently I've not experienced any downtime on any of the servers, and there is no more resource congestion.""Saves us a lot of space in the data center.""The setup was very straightforward.""We're doing a lot of VMware for IT so this solution is really valuable from a VMH point of view. We're trying to assist our customers mainly with management, because that's what they want. The most important aspects are ease of management, as well as ease of configuration, allowing them to attach additional nodes and resources for the applications.""The solution was connected to alternate storage. It provides great scalability and reliability."

"You don't have to spend much time evaluating the hardware. It can be deployed in a short time. The tool is also easy to upgrade.""The solution immediately expands storage area when you add nodes.""No concerns regarding the footprint in the data center.""The most valuable feature of Dell vSAN Ready Nodes is the flexibility of the nodes. Additionally, if there are any critical issues they update us through emails. The issues are taken care of remotely on the system.""The most valuable feature is the set of user tools that are available.""Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes is scalable""If I consider the overall product, I would say that it is an excellent solution that offers very good performance and stability.""The most valuable feature of Dell vSAN Ready Nodes is file sharing."

Cons
"vSAN's free version does not have a graphical user interface.""Performance when in storage-separate configuration needs to be improved.""I would say that the documentation is mostly great, however, some features could be expanded upon a bit.""The GUI deserves a little love.""I see no need for major improvements but there could be some improvements in the form of notifications and the simplifying of maintenance mode.""The only way I can see this product needing improvement is the consultation level of the StarWind sales and engineers.""It took a bit of knowledge and support to put in place but once installed it works fine. Migration (HyperV) from one server to another sometimes takes longer than expected but there is no data loss even if the host crashes.""A web management interface would be good, especially for those coming from other solutions that have one."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Compared to similar solutions, Dell PowerFlex is not cost-effective and has room for improvement.""They need to work on improving the overhead for protecting the data.""The solution must be more flexible.""Including instrumentation would be a helpful improvement.""I would like to see a more user-friendly interface.""The solution needs to offer more documentation and educational materials.""The support of containers needs to be improved. At present, it is limited to VMware. There needs to be direct communication with the hardware rather than through a hypervisor.""We've had some issues around the licensing."

More Dell PowerFlex Cons →

"The deployment is done by doing it one by one and could be simplified.""Upgrades are carried out manually.""The product's price is an area of concern where improvements are required. The price of Dell vSAN Ready Nodes could be lowered.""The solution should provide daily task alerts for data recovery maintenance, usage, and other instructions to ensure the systems are in a good status.""Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes is a great hyper-converged system that is a perfect platform for supporting any kind of workload. The only workload that it's not designed to support is big data.""The solution doesn't scale.""The Dell VxRail solution is based on vSAN Ready Nodes, but the Dell VxRail is fully automated. It would be helpful if this automation feature could be added to the Dell vSAN Ready Nodes. For example, we need to install VMware ESXi, and manually expand the cluster.""Dell vSAN Ready Nodes must be flexible since it is complex in designing concepts. It needs to improve stability. The product should integrate with the public cloud."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
