You don't need to worry about data security or the loss of data.""Microsoft 365 Business is easy to use. Most companies use Microsoft Windows as an operating system making the use of this solution straightforward. There is a small learning curve and it is something everyone can adapt to easily.""The solution is very flexible and the UI is user-friendly.""Microsoft 365 Business applications are very used to use and have a good interface."

"The most valuable features are the collaboration and sharing.""The ability to quickly and easily create team sites has been great.""I do like the collaboration around documents. The versioning history has proven useful in some instances as well.""Ability to store files of any type.""The most valuable feature of SharePoint is its ease of use.""SharePoint has an option where you can open files on the browser, whereby more than five people can make amendments to one Excel online file.""The metadata services, the WCF service integration and the Voxel feature are three most valuable elements of this solution.""The online editing capabilities, file sharing, auditing, information security, ease of solution management, and the easy user adaptation to the platform are the most valuable features."

Cons
"I don't like the tool's administration which consists of crappy operations.""Their technical support could be faster. The admin portal, report generation, and other things could also be much simpler. We can't do columns adjustment at this time. The desktop app of Teams had lots of issues recently. The web version worked fine. We had to do a lot of things in terms of infrastructure and networking. It could have been better. It is quite new, so we got to bear and go with that, and then we'll see.""The technical support could be more knowledgeable.""The solution's licensing framework needs improvement.""Outlook doesn't sync with Google Calendar.""Their support could be improved. They should pick the right people who are capable of resolving technical issues.""The customization after the initial setup can take a while.""Flow and Form components can be improved individually, but it would be nice to see the product take the next step and operate as a unit rather than separate modules."

More Microsoft 365 Business Cons →

"I understand that some functions are lost when you store the information in a file system, so maybe that's a way SharePoint can improve.""Processing data from multiple site collections is not easy as they reside in different databases.""The areas of this solution that need improvement are the relationships between lists, cross-site web parts, and page-building tools.""Workflow is something that can become more intelligent.""More hints and make it more user-customizable.""The way to change the version of the files in SharePoint should be improved. The method of synchronizing files from local to the cloud can also use improvement.""Improve the user-friendliness.""We do sell Hyland OnBase, which is probably a competitor to SharePoint and does a lot more. In our own organization, we haven't had a need for it, but certainly, for our customers, we are finding that to be a better fit. In terms of the technical reasons for that, I'm not involved much on that side, so I can't give specifics, but there is certainly room for them to improve or add on certain features that clearly are not available in SharePoint, but they are available in Hyland OnBase."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Depending on which plan you purchase, there are a plethora of applications available to you."
  • "Compared to buying a license, it is much cheaper and a good buy."
  • "We do monthly billing, however, I'm not sure what the exact costs are. We may pay around $1,000/month. We started using the Microsoft Teams and we've started doing the conference call feature, so that's another $4 an account and we have a few accounts using that right now."
  • "USD $1,250 annually for the standard package."
  • "Pricing can vary a lot due to fluctuations in exchange rates and that is not favorable for planning."
  • "Now you can select different licenses, for example, if somebody doesn't need all of the features, it would cost $8 USD per month and if they didn't need the email application then it would cost $6 USD per month."
  • "It works out to be $12.50 per user per month."
  • "Microsoft 365 Business will be good to have if you have a large organization where you have more than 3000 employees. Other cheaper solutions, like Gmail, are easily available in the market."
  • More Microsoft 365 Business Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "As usual, Microsoft’s licensing structures don’t really seem to fit the needs of their products. This leads to always paying for a project you will never use fully or always be adding to."
  • "Licensing can be by server or by seat."
  • "It is very expensive."
  • "The data classification and search elements are cheap."
  • "The replacement costs for it are cheaper if you use only SharePoint."
  • "We have purchased add-ons to handle multiple site collections, form creation, and design."
  • "The cost is expensive, but worthwhile."
  • "The pricing works for us."

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
