Broadcom DX Application Performance Management Initial Setup

aush.111 - PeerSpot reviewer
Engineer at Ooredoo Qatar

The initial setup is kind of complicated initially because of technical limitations.

In short, it needs heavy resources. That's the pain point. Compared with AppDynamics and Dynatrace, regardless of the agents, like the number of resources you try to monitor, they take up the resources very much in advance, which is a big concern.

So, usually like, I work in the telecom industry where we have the billing system, which usually takes the largest amount of volume in terms of resources. What DXP asks for is bigger than the billing system. So, that is a big challenge to acquire the resources on-premises.

On-prem is the difficult thing. That's one of the biggest challenges we've faced. So, since we've cut down on the resources, we had a number of issues.

Once we have just provided sufficient resources, it passes. Like, all the failures were gone through and all the failures on the number of challenges we faced all were mainly related to the resources crunch.

So, overall, deployment took seven to eight days.

I rate the product's initial setup phase a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup process, and ten is an easy setup process. The main issues with the setup phase stem from the fact that there are a lot of requirements related to the application installation of Broadcom products, and such requirements are not well-documented. No documents are available from Broadcom, including any pre-defined and pre-requisite documents.

For the product's deployment phase, I go to the document provided by Broadcom. According to Broadcom's document, our company decides to take care of the profile sizing by considering how many applications are onboarded or installed in an environment, after which we finalize hardware configuration, and once it is available, then we start to build the OS, following which we configure the application.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

The solution can be deployed in a week, starting from hardware configuration to application deployment.

The initial setup of Broadcom DX Application Performance Management was easy. We have a contract for support, but we didn't have to use it as the tool was easy to use and we were able to handle everything internally. We are currently using a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution.

The implementation took two weeks.

I rate the initial setup of Broadcom DX Application Performance Management an eight out of ten.

The thing with most of the CA solutions, there is just a lot of infrastructure required. I have done a lot of work for a number of different products and software, and there is always a bunch of servers that I need to set up. At one point, we had 80 servers just to monitor the application layer for the whole organization. That is a lot. Just because the footprints are big. It would be nice to have a smaller footprint, with less of a initial cost for infrastructure, but that is probably why they are investing in SaaS.

The initial setup is complex. Size made it complex, and understanding the complex nature of our application landscape itself. It is very diverse.

We acquired a bunch of banks and a bunch of wealth management companies which were put together as one bank. This means each of them have their own technical landscapes. You need to understand each of them and they also talk to each other. It is complex in nature from how we are as a bank from a technological front. This makes a complex nature to deploy a tool to work across the board.

The deployment could improve because it is complicated and not user-friendly on how to deploy the agents. You have to do many changes on the client-side. There are a lot of improvements needed.

The deployment for one client-server or one client target can take approximately 30 to 60 minutes. However, it does depend on the client.

The initial setup is very straightforward; it is not complex. It is well-documented. I can follow the documentation to get the tool working.

For a simple install, the deployment can take about a day, then I can monitor any application.

A complex install will need requirements to be gathered for how things are done and how deep the data is to be implemented and instrumented. If they are a huge number of classes to be monitored, then we need to collect all that information from the application team or client. Afterwards, we have to instrument the system. This may take a week or ten days based on the requirements.

When we first installed, it took us six months to install it and get it somewhat usable. Our upgrades, because we're having to step development or step environments, usually takes us about three months.

The step environment is where we do dev tests. This involves stress and QA cycles, and then production. Each one has to have a month to get everything installed, tested, and verified to make sure it doesn't impact our core applications.

We just now finished our Phase 2 upgrade to our second tier, which is our performance test environment and our QA two environments. It went really well. The reason why it took us a month to do our test was because we had to get everything lined up with CA support and to get the install and upgrade completed.

Vanilla setup is easy and quick. It's easy to understand, too. Because it has so many customization options available, services generally end up writing customization. This can be simple to complex, but nothing is too complex here.

Support Engineer at a tech services company with 501-1,000 employees

The initial setup was very easy. If anything, the more complex task was the configuration of the probe-based network appliance SW. To be honest, the only issue was because of an error we had with the ISO for version 9.1.4. Our storage guys "undeploy" a NFS file system from the virtual machine and the ISO (RHEL 5.2 + TIM Sw) fails in the boot. Now you can install a supported OS on your own and then install TIM SW (you can get the TIM SW installer on your own.)

It was a simple initial configuration. In order to minimize impacts on the operations of the business, a strategy was adopted taking into account the application of low-impact stretching forward to the greatest impact. Setup for a limited scope is easy, but it's difficult for a wider scope, in which case you need a longer deployment time. We have a mainframe-oriented system, so we can scope the old activity to the mainframe. but if we were fully distributed, it's a little bit complicated because we'd have more than 100 servers.
