Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Client deduplication.""Every product is good and bad, but its claim to fame is that it is scalable. We're doing more than 3,000 VMs. Every single night a complete image backup to disks and replication are easily done in under four hours.""The product is good for backups.""The stability of Dell EMC Avamar is very good.""All the features in the system are highly valuable.""The most valuable features are image backups and file backups.""Effective in protecting the virtualization system and end points.""For the on-prem backup, it has all the necessary features that we require. They keep coming up with new scripts and new updates."

More Dell Avamar Pros →

"The interface is easy to use.""We've found the product to be quite stable and the performance is very good.""The product is very stable.""The file-restoring feature is the most valuable.""The backup of Sybase databases is the most valuable feature in the existing environment. They have got the most documentation out there on the internet for its software protection. The documentation is excellent, and there are a lot of blogs, websites. Because it's still one of the oldest products out there for data protection, there are also lots of people who have a lot of experience in using this solution.""High availability (HA): It is one of the best features.""Performance and recoveries are better. Our clients and customers are happier with the performance of it.""This solution has improved our organization through better file and database recovery."

Cons
"When we used the solution, it was still new, and so the customer service/technical support was not the best.""This solution could improve by introducing daily verifications and another repository.""A benefit would be support for either Azure Cool Storage or AWS Glacier.""Compared with Cohesity or Rubrik, which have some continuous data protection for backup and replication, this solution tends to lack in this area.""The support is very bad.""The solution, in the future, should offer support for mobile.""The performance takes up a lot of resources, unfortunately.""Avamar is not the best tool when it comes to taking Azure backups. Like Commvault, if Avamar can support VM-level backups for the cloud, that would make it a bit better."

More Dell Avamar Cons →

"High availability (HA) is a scalability challenge.""We have run into some periods where we have found some tape issues which were causing us problems, but we resolved them. For some reason, we had a bunch of drives go offline on our disk storage (our virtual library).""Needs more support for non-mainstream databases, in particular PostgreSQL, SQL, and MySQL.""Its management part can be better and simplified. It is kind of a beast as compared to Commvault or Veeam, but they are more user-friendly. They are also easier to learn, whereas Spectrum Protect definitely takes time. They should simplify it. Our teams are pretty comfortable with it because we have been using it for a long time, but from the perspective of a new user who is evaluating or using this solution, it is definitely more complex in terms of manageability. Its monitoring could be improved so that it can even monitor the jobs that are scheduled by external schedulers. There are situations where a database team might decide to use their own schedulers, but currently, Spectrum Protect is not able to catch those jobs in the Operation Manager console.""I would like to see the operations center be a lot more functional. It was nowhere near as functional as the admin center, and I'm doing a lot of command line with it.""In a future release, it would be a benefit to have the ability to add an application as a storage target, as a storage pool. Additionally, they should add more functionality to the administration for the Operation Center.""It lacks reporting and an efficient alert mechanism. The GUI could also be improved.""The product should be improved to save more space."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge."
  • "This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
  • "I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
  • "The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."

  • "Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
  • "Licensing can be either complicated or simple depending on what type of licensing you wish to use and what works best for your environment."
  • "At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
  • "Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
  • "We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
  • "We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
  • "Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
  • "It is very scalable, but the downside is that it costs money."
