We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It covers a lot of different types of hardware. It can do a lot and saves us time.""Scalability is a highly rated feature of this solution. It is better than some of the other tools that I've used in terms of scalability. We scaled it to tens of thousands of devices.""The most valuable features of DX Spectrum are the comprehensive alerts.""This product provides good visibility into applications at the backend.""The integration point.""We can monitor MPLS network VPN, network configuration, and backups. It's highly scalable for network configuration management.""The fault management is perfect.""The presentation layer is pretty simple and straightforward."

"Spiceworks is generic and free.""It lets us know whether devices are getting out of date and tracked warranties. Spiceworks also gave me visibility in terms of what software was installed on each device and its status.""It's easy to understand.""It was easy to integrate Spiceworks with our existing setup.""It shows the users that are currently logged in, which is not something that Active Directory by default will ever let you know up front.""Tickets by e-mail, with actions by hastag.""The solution can find all asset details automatically, whether it's a Mac address, computer name, IP address, models, etc. It's very helpful.""If you're in the market for a low-cost service desk system, Spiceworks is a good software solution to start out with, especially when it comes to startups and those organizations that don't currently have any existing service desk software in place."

Cons
"DX Spectrum needs better documentation on its complex features.""If they could interact with the MIBs of vendors better, and have a lot more pre-loaded ones, that would be amazing for us right now.""Our consultant was four months on-site doing Spectrum setup and working through issues.""I would suggest improving the web GUI to improve the device monitor configuration and to improve or to integrate the new tool for reporting.""Needs better integration with all the other products in the Agile suite of tools; anything they could do to make that less complex, would be great.""DX Spectrum is stable. However, now and then there are some issues, but overall it is good.""We have a lot of different monitoring tools in the background, so orchestration has been a little bit of a challenge.""We want to make our own choice for the AIOps solution and do not want to be forced to use the Broadcom OI solution by default."

More DX Spectrum Cons →

"The GUI must be improved.""It would be nice to have remote access to the solution via a tablet. They also need remote control from a PC. Right now, to complete the technical support process, you have to have a tool to access the PC, and check the problems.""The network mapping could be improved. Putting together an actual bonafide network map would be really nice.""Having an integrated asset management tool, where I can plug in things that are offline, would be good.""They've also tried to integrate it with social logins, like Twitter and LinkedIn, and that type of login authentication has no place in a corporate application.""One of the biggest ways in which Spiceworks could improve is by developing better and more automated workflows. For example, in another solution called ServiceDesk by ManageEngine, you can have levels of approval in the event that there is a request for new software, or when someone requests a VPN or WiFi connection. This kind of multi-stage approval feature provided by ServiceDesk does not appear to exist in Spiceworks, and it is one of their main shortcomings for me.""Since Spiceworks is a free tool, it's not very scriptable or customizable.""With Spiceworks, like, when I open the websites, I have to Zoom in. I need to zoom in on those websites sometimes because it makes it horrible to use."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very pricey. With the current trend of enterprises moving towards cheaper and more modern looking solutions like ManageEngine, SevOne, ServicePilot, and Paesller."
  • "It’s a great tool, but an expensive one. Learn how to use it properly."
  • "The cost of some of these products are a little cost prohibitive, which is unfortunate. We have to find lower cost solutions for some of the things that we have to pull in. For the most part, CA has capabilities in pretty much everything that you would need. You just have to figure out where are you going to spend the most money for what you have to actually get done. You can do all these things but, which ones do you have to do? And that's hard to choose sometimes because you want to do them all."
  • "In general, the license cost will be about 30% of the total TCO for this tool (hardware/support team, OS costs, and OS management)."
  • "The product, support, and maintenance are all expensive, which is another reason that we are switching to another solution."
  • "The price is very high."
  • "The price of the solution is reasonable."
  • "Currently, a perpetual license but some services are moving to a subscription"

  • "The product is free! Get it now."
  • "It's free."
  • "It might be about $300 annually for a bigger company. If you pay annually, it's better and cheaper."
  • "Seeing that it is a low-cost solution, I would advise you to go ahead with Spiceworks and experiment with it to see if you can get things working properly, especially if you currently don't have any existing service desk software in place."
  • "The tool is cheap."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
