We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I'm pretty happy with its reliability. It is also very scalable.""It's very good and very stable for businesses. It works very well.""It is a good source for firewall protection.""FortiGate is very simple to manage and easy to use.""FortiGate has a strong security topic which allows all of the Fortinet devices to communicate and share information which makes their security more powerful.""The payment function for applications is good.""The most valuable features of the solution are SD-WAN, filtering testing applications, web filtering, and the new VPN.""We are a visual effects company, and there have been a number of high profile security issues in our industry. This has brought us to a higher standard of security, which our clients are very keen on these days."

"We have complete visibility of attacks originating from email including spear-phishing, spoofing, etc.""The most valuable feature is that we can use the same manager server that we use on our own Check Point firewalls. We integrated CloudGuard on that manager and we can use the same kind of protections that we use on the on-prem firewalls, like the IPS and antivirus policy. We can have the same kind of protection on the Cloud environment that we have on-premise.""What's most valuable to me is that it's a contiguous solution that aligns well with the components that we've relied on and trusted from a traditional hardware, firewall, and unified threat management system. My engineers and analysts don't have to learn another platform. We have already entrusted our security controls to Check Point for perimeter and physical security, and now we can do so at the virtual layer as well, which is key to us.""Moving into the cloud without having to change a lot of our internal processes and retrain staff is one of the biggest benefits of this solution.""The ease of deployment has been nice. It is like managing any of our on-prem firewalls.""Some retail customers find the scale-up and scale-down features valuable, particularly with scale sets. This is useful for handling increased loads on devices and utilizing firewalls, similar to on-premises setups with active standby configurations.""SSL/TLS traffic inspection features are used for advanced threat prevention against secure SSL traffic.""I like how straightforward it is and simple it is to implement in the cloud."

"I'm more inclined towards the conventional firewall. So for me, I'm more geared towards the standard firewall type functionalities as well as the web application firewall because that seems to work fine.""The most valuable feature is the IPSec forwarding.""The most valuable feature of this product is the threat protection.""The solution is easy to use.""I found that the best feature of Sophos Cyberoam UTM is reporting. Its reporting feature is excellent, fast, and easy to prep and launch.""The user interface is well laid out and understandable.""The main features I have found best are the load balancer and ease of use.""Web and content filtering are valuable in preventing people from abusing the network and pushing up the bandwidth price."

Cons
"There are a lot of bugs I have found in the solution and it is difficult to upgrade. These areas need improvement.""It could use more templates for third-party site-to-site VPN setups other than FortiGate and Cisco.""It would be ideal if they had some sort of GUI interface for troubleshooting and diagnostics.""It would be a benefit if Fortinet would release a one-stop solution that is better integrated with other products and an automated emergency response system.""They should make the rule sets more understandable for the end user. When you're trying to explain to somebody how a computer network is secured, sometimes it's difficult for an end user or customer to understand. If there was a way to make the terminology more accessible to the end user, the set up could be easier. They should translate the technical jargon to an easily relatable and understandable conversation for the end user, the customer, that would be brilliant. Particularly in an environment where the IT structure is audited regularly, there's always pressure from the auditor to up the standards and up the security and you get your USCERT's that come out and there's a warning about this and the customer will want to lock out so much and when you apply it they run into issue where they can't search the internet or print to their remote office. Of course they can't print to your remote office, they just locked it up. They should make the language more understandable for the customer. If there's a product out there that made the jargon understandable to John Q. Public, I would buy that.""The central management for the FortiGate Fortinet Firewall needs improvement. They have the manager to do the essential management for both SD-WAN and for the security policy. They should also improve the SD-WAN function.""We sometimes have issues with FortiGate's routing table in the latest firmware update. We had to downgrade the device because our customers complained about bugs.""As far as wanting more scalability or things in the network diagram, it's going to cost you."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"Check Point Virtual Systems is a complete solution, but pricing can be better.""There is room for improvement in addressing bugs and support issues.""While Check Point does offer some VWAN offerings, they appear to be more static and less tailored to cloud-native environments compared to Palo Alto's dynamic and flexible approach.""We are at the place where we are looking at better integration with the management system. We use an MDS today, and it is self-deployed. We want to get to the Smart-1 Cloud, but we do not know what that looks like today because it does not support a multi-domain setup. Smart-1 should either be able to do multi-domain or there should be some form of taking a multi-domain environment and putting it in Smart-1.""I hope that Check Point continues to improve its technical documentation regarding the Check Point CloudGuard IaaS gateway and management system.""While today we can manage some scopes, there are still some segments in the OSI layer we cannot manage.""Regarding CloudGuard Network Security's integration with various resources like application gateways and application-based security groups, there's room for exploring dynamic access in those areas. A significant concern is the upgrade process. Unlike an in-place upgrade, upgrading the tool in Azure requires deploying a new resource, which can be hectic and less reliable. We have to spend something new to have the tool's latest version.""For major upgrades, it's still necessary to destroy the VMs and re-create them again. Doing that would mean new public IPs as well."

More Check Point CloudGuard Network Security Cons →

"Smaller CR15 units don’t have a hard disc or built in IView software. These units could do with that feature.""There is a lot or room for improvement, because it is still not a fourth or fifth generation firewall. It lacks security features.""It isn't missing anything.""The configuration requires an expert to be set up, so it could be made simpler.""We use different workarounds and find different solutions for it, depending on the client's needs. We shouldn't have to, we should just be able to use the product as it comes with Cyberoam, rather than having to revert to other products.""The VPN is an area that can be improved.""In my experience the solution can be easier to configure with more documentation, we need more training.""The solution should improve its scalability because it cannot support enterprise networks."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "On average, it is normally on the lower end, being less expensive than Palo Alto or Cisco."
  • "It is more expensive than other solutions and would be more competetive in the market if it came down in price."
  • "We pay approximately ‎€150,000 ($166,000 USD) per year."
  • "Licensing is simply by the number of hosts that you are looking to protect within your environment. It makes it much easier to ensure that you are covering your environment."
  • "There is flexibility in the different licensing models that are offered."
  • "The pricing is pretty high, not just for your capital, for what you have to pay upfront, but for what you pay for your annual software renewals as well, compared to a lot of other vendors. Check Point is near the top, as far as how much it's going to cost you."
  • "Pricing of CloudGuard is pretty fair when you have a single account. It's comparable with other cloud providers. But for our use case, it got really pricey when we had to deploy multiple CloudGuards on multiple accounts in different regions, because you can't have CloudGuard protecting multiple regions. That's the big thing."
  • "The pricing and licensing have been good. We just had to do a license increase for our portion of it. We had that done within a couple of days. Given the fact that it's purely a software-based license, it ends up being even quicker than doing it for an on-prem firewall."
  • More Check Point CloudGuard Network Security Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It is very reasonably priced as compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "Licensing is a bit costly, mostly for features requiring subscription."
  • "Licensing is very good value for the money."
  • "It is more expensive than cheap routers, but it offers a lot of functionality, and that warrants the price."
  • "The price is very competitive and the licensing is easy."
  • "It’s value for the money. It’s functionally competitive with higher priced alternative brands."
  • "It is worth the value."
  • "Prices are very high."
