Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ability to set up remote systems is the most valuable feature.""The pipe filter application is an outstanding feature.""It can expand easily.""The most valuable feature of this solution is Quota.""Good load balancing feature.""The most valuable feature is the policy routing and application control.""FortiGate is on the cheaper end, and it offers good value.""FortiGate firewalls are easy to manage through a user-friendly web interface. They also have advanced features like DDoS and DLP. However, I wouldn't recommend enabling all of these features on one device because it can cause performance issues."

"The clusters in data centers are great.""The solution's dashboard is fine, and in terms of support, Cisco is better than other OEMs in the market.""This product is pretty stable.""Malicious URLs are being blocked.""The primary benefits of using Cisco Secure solutions are time-saving, a robust API, and convenience for the security team.""The most valuable feature is that it has the ability to divide the network into three parts; internal, external, and DMZ.""Signature-based detection; user-defined signatures with regular expressions; integrated URL and content filtering; custom URL categories filtering.""At this point, we find that this product has high productivity and high availability and there is no need for improvement."

"The MVX Engine seems to be very capable against threats and the way it handles APTs is impressive.""Application categorization is the most valuable feature for us. Application filtering is very interesting because other products don't give you full application filtering capabilities.""It allows us to be more hands off in checking on emails and networking traffic. We can set up a bunch of different alerts and have it alert us.""The installation phase was easy.""It protects from signature-based attacks and signature-less attacks. The sandboxing technology, invented by FireEye, is very valuable. Our customers go for FireEye because of the sandboxing feature. When there is a threat or any malicious activity with a signature, it can be blocked by IPS. However, attacks that do not have any signatures and are very new can only be blocked by using the sandboxing feature, which is available only in FireEye. So, FireEye has both engines. It has an IPS engine and a sandbox engine, which is the best part. You can get complete network protection by using FireEye.""The product is very easy to configure.""Over the thirteen years of using the product, we have not experienced a single compromise in our environment. During the COVID period, we faced numerous DDoS attacks, and the tool proved highly effective in mitigating these threats.""The most valuable feature is the view into the application."

Cons
"The UTM filtering needs improvement.""FortiOS is not simple.""With the reports, you can see it, and you can get good feelings so upper management can go, "Oh, wow. That looks pretty." However, it's very basic.""The room for improvement is about the global delivery time period. Usually I need to wait for almost one month to deliver it overseas. So if you can shorten the deliver time it'd be great.""Monitoring and reporting could be better.""Fortinet FortiGate can be integrated with different platforms. They have integrations in place, but I can't say they're 100%.""The pricing could be reduced or include the first year warranty.""It could use more templates for third-party site-to-site VPN setups other than FortiGate and Cisco."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"We are Cisco partners, and when we recommend Cisco FirePower to customers, they always think that FirePower is bad. For a single installation of FirePower, if I have to write about 18 tickets to Cisco, it's a big problem. There was an issue was related to Azure. We had Active Directory in Azure. The clients had to connect to FirePower through Azure. We had a lot of group policies. After two group policies, we had to make groups in Azure, and they had to sign in and sign back. It was a triple-layer authentication, and there was a big problem, so we didn't use it.""It is hard to collaborate with our filtered environment.""It would be great to have all the data correlated to have an overview and one point of administration.""Its configuration through GUI as well as CLI can be improved and made easier.""The product line does not address the SMB market as it is supposed to do. Cisco already has an on-premises sandbox solution.""For what we use it for, it ends up being the perfect product for us, but it would help if they could expand it into some of the other areas and other use cases working with speeding up and the reliability of the pushes from the policy manager.""The one thing that the ASAs don't have is a central management point. We have a lot of our environments on FTD right now. So, we are using a Firewall Management Center (FMC) to manage all those. The ASAs don't really have that, but they are easy to use if you physically go into them and manage them.""I don't have any specific improvements to recommend. However, when you compare the throughput of a Cisco firewall to the competitors, especially Fortinet, what you find is that Cisco has lagged a little bit behind in terms of firewall throughput, especially for the price that you pay for that throughput."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"Technical packaging could be improved.""Stability issues manifested in terms of throughput maximization.""It is an expensive solution.""It would be great if we could create granular reports based on the protocols, types of attacks, regions of attack, etc. Also we would like to easily be able to add exceptions to rules in cases of false positives.""I heard that FireEye recently was hacked, and a lot of things were revealed. We would like FireEye to be more secure as an organization. FireEye has to be more protective because it is one of the most critical devices that we are using in our environment. They have a concept called SSL decryption, but that is only the packet address. We would like FireEye to also do a lot of decryption inside the packet. Currently, FireEye only does encryption and decryption of the header, but we would like them to do encryption and decryption of the entire packet.""Management of the appliance could be greatly improved.""Certain features in Trellix Network Detection and Response, such as using AL-type commands, may initially pose a challenge for those unfamiliar with such commands. However, once users become accustomed to the system, it becomes easier to use.""Technical support could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."

  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."

  • "Pricing and licensing are reasonable compared to competitors."
  • "The pricing is a little high."

  • "There are some additional services that I understand the vendor provides, but our approach was to package all of the features that we were looking to use into the product."
  • "We're partners with Cisco so we get a reasonable price. It's cheaper than Palo Alto in terms of licensing."
  • "FireEye is comparable to other products, such as HX, but seems expensive. It may cause us to look at other products in the market."
  • "When I compare this solution to its competitors in the market, I find that it is a little expensive."
