Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It does a lot for you for intrusion protection and as an antivirus. The threat management bundle is worth the money. You don't need another company to monitor your web traffic for you. You can do everything yourself on the firewall. You restrict your own black list for people on the firewall. You don't need to pay some other company for another product to do that for you. The firewall can do that for you. So, it's an easy-to-use product for people to be independent. They don't need to rely on other vendors to do what the firewall can do. They can do everything.""Valuable features include the Web Application Firewall, and it even has DLP (data leak prevention).""We use a southern institution that's audited for IT security and the reporting that automatically comes off the unit makes it much easier to meet compliance standards and makes it easier as far as the amount of time that has to be spent to compile that information. If you get your reporting set up correctly when you initially set it up, you just select the one you want and hit print. The auditing trail on it is the best feature.""Fortinet FortiGate's reliability is valuable.""The user interface (UI) is very, very good.""Its stability is the most valuable.""Easy to use support and licensing portal as well as activation process.""This solution made it very easy to manage our bandwidth."

"Cisco ASA Firewall is a well known product. They're always updating it, and you know what they're doing and that it works.""The Firepower IPS, based on Snort technology, has an amazing detection engine and historical analysis capability of files that eases threat investigations a lot.""They are easy to maintain.""The most stable firewall I’ve ever worked with. Once you get the ASA set up properly, it can run for a whole year without any major issues, apart from the normal daily administration.""I like that it is easy to change the settings.""Cisco Secure Firewall improved our organization. We have it in every one of our French offices.""The product is quite robust and durable.""The high-availability and remote VPN features are most valuable."

"The product has helped improve our organization by being easy to use and integrate. This saves time, trouble and money.""The MVX Engine seems to be very capable against threats and the way it handles APTs is impressive.""The most valuable feature is the view into the application.""It protects from signature-based attacks and signature-less attacks. The sandboxing technology, invented by FireEye, is very valuable. Our customers go for FireEye because of the sandboxing feature. When there is a threat or any malicious activity with a signature, it can be blocked by IPS. However, attacks that do not have any signatures and are very new can only be blocked by using the sandboxing feature, which is available only in FireEye. So, FireEye has both engines. It has an IPS engine and a sandbox engine, which is the best part. You can get complete network protection by using FireEye.""Improved our systems and our customers' by providing better malware protection, defense against zero-day threats, and improved network security.""If we are receiving spam emails, or other types of malicious email coming from a particular email ID, then we are able to block them using this solution.""Support is very helpful and responsive.""The features that I find most valuable are the MIR (Mandiant Incident Response) for checks on our inbound security."

Cons
"It needs to improve its ISP load balancing.""The solution needs to improve its integration with cybersecurity.""The license renewal process, annual renewal price, and the web application firewall features should be improved.""The UTM filtering needs improvement.""Bandwidth usage in reporting could be improved for Fortinet FortiGate.""It should provide better visibility over the network and more information in the form of reports for the end users. Its installation should also be easier.""Some of the features in the graphical user interface do not work, which requires that we used the command-line-interface.""Cisco Meraki products are rising very quickly in the cloud and the connected era. Meraki products offer much better ROI, upgradability, and manageability."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"REST API stability needs improvement in order for customizing resource allocation available to the user rather than just being there transparently. This way users can customize REST API and tailor it to their needs.""In Firepower, there is an ability to search and dig into a search, which is nice. However, I'm not a super fan of the way it scrolls. If you want to look at something live, it's a lot different. You're almost waiting. With the ASDM, where it just flows, you can really see it. The second someone clicks something or does something, you'll see it. The refresh rate on the events in Firepower is not as smooth.""The cloud does not precisely mimic what is on-premises.""One big pain point I have is the ASDM interface because it's Java, and sometimes, it's a bit buggy and has low performance. That's something that probably won't be improved because of backward compatibility.""The phishing emails could be improved.""You need to have a little bit of knowledge to be able to configure it. Otherwise, it would be very difficult to configure because there is no GUI. The latest software available in the market has a GUI and probably zero-touch provisioning and auto-configuration. All these things are not available in our version. You need to manually go and configure everything in the switch. In terms of new features, we would definitely want to have URL-based filtering, traffic steering, and probably a little bit steering in the bandwidth based on the per-user level and per-user group. We will definitely need some of these features in the near future.""The SSL VPN is, and always has been, painful to configure and the Java plugin does not guarantee a uniform deployment.""In the past though, colleagues have had issues during the upgrade process. The failover didn't work and production was down."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"It doesn't connect with the cloud, advanced machine learning is not there. A known threat can be coming into the network and we would want the cloud to look up the problem. I would also like to see them develop more file replication and machine learning.""Its documentation can be improved. The main problem that I see with FireEye is the documentation. We are an official distributor and partner of FireEye, and we have access to complete documentation about how to configure or implement this technology, but for customers, very limited documentation is available openly. This is the area in which FireEye should evolve. All documents should be easily available for everyone.""It would be a good idea if we could get an option to block based upon the content of an email, or the content of a file attachment.""It would be great if we could create granular reports based on the protocols, types of attacks, regions of attack, etc. Also we would like to easily be able to add exceptions to rules in cases of false positives.""Cybersecurity posture has room for improvement.""It would be very helpful if there were better integration with other solutions from other vendors, such as Fortinet and Palo Alto.""It is very expensive, the price could be better.""Improvements could be achieved through greater integration capabilities with different firewall solutions. Integrating with the dashboard itself for different firewalls so users can also pull tags into their firewall dashboard."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."
  • More Cisco Secure Firewall Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing and licensing are reasonable compared to competitors."
  • "The pricing is a little high."
  • "Because of what the FireEye product does, it has significantly decreased our mean time in being able to identify and detect malicious threats. The company that I work with is a very mature organization, and we have seen the meantime to analysis decrease by at least tenfold."
  • "There are some additional services that I understand the vendor provides, but our approach was to package all of the features that we were looking to use into the product."
  • "We're partners with Cisco so we get a reasonable price. It's cheaper than Palo Alto in terms of licensing."
  • "FireEye is comparable to other products, such as HX, but seems expensive. It may cause us to look at other products in the market."
  • "When I compare this solution to its competitors in the market, I find that it is a little expensive."
  • "The user fee is not as high but the maintenance fee is expensive."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
