Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ease of use has been one of the most valuable features. It has a very simple wiki.""This is a scalable solution that supports thousands of users.""The product has a valuable feature for quick verification of documents.""It is a good collaboration tool.""It has a very intuitive user interface, which every user able to manage the basic functionality of a PC will be able to work with and produce quite satisfactory results.""As for valuable features, the team management features help us to share information very easily.""It is just the fact that it is a one-stop shop for all project documentation. It is compared to storing things in files and directories and stuff like that. It provides the overall usability and accessibility of many projects and documents in one area.""The solution offers a lot of freedom when drafting directly online."

"It improved transparency around work products.""It has helped us with storing all the documents, which means that people are not going to intervene. There is a way of extracting knowledge within documentation and tracking it. There are knowledge assets for where documentation is stored, indexed and searchable through SharePoint.""The workflow feature is valuable because it enables us to cascade responsibilities.""Combined reports and data with timeline tracking.""SharePoint has made things easier with the increased functionality for building the portals, microsites, and total integration with Microsoft categories.""The security feature is valuable.""The ability to take Excel files and make them dynamic SharePoint lists with instant reporting capabilities has been a major benefit.""Its configuration management ability is critical for document-based systems."

Cons
"It would be good if they can continue working towards making documentation and editing as quick and easy as possible. It has got a lot of capability, but I don't know how to use it. I don't find some of the things that intuitive. Sometimes, it doesn't seem obvious to me how to use it, but it is like learning any new tool. You actually need to get trained on the tool to get maximum out of it.""RAM usage seems to be higher than it should be.""Atlassian needs to provide the source editor or a built-in plugin.""Some elements of the user interface could be more user-friendly, including embedding diagrams.""An area for improvement in Atlassian Confluence is encouraging more vital interaction among the project members or users involved. I was researching a tool that could be used for better interactions offline among users on a specific topic or discussion. That feature would make Atlassian Confluence better.""Atlassian Confluence could improve the stability, there are timeouts sometimes.""The UX is a little bit all over the place.""I would like to see more macros provided by the company included in the license."

More Atlassian Confluence Cons →

"I would like it to be more compliant with global regulations. There are certain features which could be included that currently are not there, such as compliance and record management capabilities.""Integration needs to be more straightforward, particularly with Azure. SharePoint also needs a more comprehensive introductory course for users.""It has worked very well for me. It seems like they've improved everything. I don't have any cons about it as such, but I don't think they have a talk-to-text, speech-to-text, or speech-to-type. That would be cool for accessibility.""We would like more security features, like automating.""The company also needs to make sure that their policies are dictating how information is stored and used, instead of letting SharePoint take control.""The product does not perform 100% when used outside of a Microsoft based browser, Chrome, Firefox, etc.""During uptime under our network, it is hard to find info when content is hefty.""I understand that some functions are lost when you store the information in a file system, so maybe that's a way SharePoint can improve."

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
