We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Our system is designed to be scalable and flexible, so it can grow and adapt to meet the changing needs of our clients.""The use of the RAM cache allows you to speed up the writing and reading of data while also allowing for a possible increase in performance by increasing the RAM on the servers.""It is a very stable solution.""The solution's most valuable feature is its versatility, with there being support for all new hardware technologies and platforms, disc mirroring and very effective auto tiering.""Mirroring is the most valuable feature because I can provide a high-level of service and optimize the use of obsolete storage.""The documentation repository is really useful and kept updated.""It is a well-proven, automated management tool in all dynamic provisioning, auto-tiering, great performance, parallel I/O, cache speed mechanism, etc.""Continuous data protection (CDP), can be used to "protect" again ransomware by recording all write on disk in a log. You can recover your data with incredible time granularity."

"It runs very well lights out. Set it and forget it.""Integration is most valuable. This is a reference architecture. So, we don't have to design something from scratch and figure out how it is going to work.""The solution has decreased the unplanned downtime incidents in our organization by 25 to 30 percent.""Our performance increase has been about 15 percent from what we previously used.""The system is designed for easy scaling. Because we define everything clearly. So when we plug the system in, we apply the profile, and it scales easily.""Our footprint is lower than it used to be.""It reduces the time required to dynamically provide applications to our end users and developers.""It is scaling to our needs. We don't have any issues."

Cons
"Having an enterprise "Storage Dashboard" that can show capacity, usage, performance, and any issues would be very beneficial.""The solution is constantly evolving.""Management could be improved. The management console sometimes reacts very slowly.""I would like to see reporting added, such as a monthly connectivity report.""The solution could be better packaged and marketed.""I still see room for improvement with DataCore SANsymphony in the area of alarm and task management.""Unified storage (all block, objects, and files) should be in a single storage pool with unified storage concepts, hence providing the user with whatever they want.""For customers or technicians that don't speak and understand English, it could be great to have other languages support, all the more so given the number of countries in which SanSymphony is used."

More DataCore SANsymphony Cons →

"The initial setup was complex. UCS is not the easiest thing to configure from the ground up. The networking pieces can get confusing, especially when you are talking about virtual segmentation. It is not as easy as other things now on the market, such as hyperconverged.""I would like more support for different platforms, possibly different database platforms. I don't know if it supports Oracle today, but that would be a big improvement.""Newer platform reference architectures take a long time to harden and be publicly available.""Upgrades are always scary because you just don't know. Nobody has six or seven different systems sitting around that you can test on before you go into production data.""There is a history of issues with hardware availability. For example, we'll buy an array or a filer with a particular configuration and particular size of drive, sizing it appropriately. Then, as we grow, they're like, "Oh, you can always get more." Then when you go to get more, that model or type of disk is no longer available. It becomes this big process to try to figure out what we need to get, how it'll work, and how that'll integrate into the system. That could be simpler. They could do a bit more to guarantee the availability of parts. Obviously, not being the largest storage vendor, I know they can't sometimes control what the hardware vendors do. However, a bit more transparency and communication about this would be helpful.""I would like to see better operations, a single pane of glass to manage and monitor the entire design across VMware, Cisco, etc. I would also like the upgrade process to be a little smoother.""FlexPod will do very well on the average app, but there's room for improvement in performance and the data center side.""FlexPod can improve with a single control management interface to manage all aspects and components of the solution."

  • "Make sure you are made aware of the annual subscription cost when purchasing."

  • "Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
  • "It seems very cost effective once it's in place, and it's easy to expand and easy to add capacity without a lot of extra money."
  • "If your company really needs to be up 100% of the time, and you need to do a private data center, I don't know if I could realistically actually recommend another blueprint."
  • "Anytime that you are buying any storage make sure you understand storage. Do not just buy storage based on what somebody sells you in terms of IO or throughput."
  • "Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
  • "As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
  • "Storage is very expensive. To buy MIC cards and additional storage either on-prem or in the cloud, the IT department does not have money for it, so you need a more niche product or a more flexible way to store your data. That is the benefit that you get from this product."
  • "We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
