We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It's a very powerful application monitoring tool across the industry. Many free, open-source tools are available. There are also paid tools, but ITRS Geneos is a real-time application monitoring tool where the user can monitor, self-configure, and manage alerts through their console.""The ability to logically normalize data gathered from multiple types of sources via pre-built plugins is extremely powerful. This functionality, coupled with the ability to import custom data via the Toolkit plugin allows Geneos to be leveraged to monitor every system in the enterprise.""The clean and colorful UI and easy to use options like snooze and active times.""Custom script toolkits""The ability to completely tailor and customize what it's monitoring is one of its strongest points. A lot of other monitoring tools are good at certain things, but one of my colleagues described it as the “Swiss Army Knife” of monitoring tools. It can do anything you want.""One thing we're utilizing in Geneos is the Gateway-SQL. That's really helpful for us. Using Gateway-SQL, we are able to merge two different views into one. Suppose we have to check something in the log and that we have to check something in the database and do a comparison before publishing a result. We can achieve that using Gateway-SQL.""One of the best aspects of Geneos is that it has a broad scope and can cover a lot of use cases. You can write your own scripts to monitor really specific things. And the rules that you can put in place can be quite complex for the alerts.""This solution has helped provide relief to existing Level 2 teams, allowing them to focus efforts on in-depth problem analysis."

"The solution is very stable. It's reliable and efficient.""The solution is easy to use and easy to manage.""Helpdesk and inventory are both equally valuable, and they form the true core of the product.""The nice thing about Spiceworks is always it's free. Monitoring of printers for low toner. Finding machines that have low memory or low hard disk space.""Spiceworks is generic and free.""It shows the users that are currently logged in, which is not something that Active Directory by default will ever let you know up front.""It was easy to integrate Spiceworks with our existing setup.""Tickets by e-mail, with actions by hastag."

Cons
"For the last year or two, I've been asking the vendor about the mobile app. This is something that probably everyone asks when they see the tool and they see how powerful it is. If there is any mobile app for this or if there is any way this tool can be more easily accessible other than having a big client installed, it would be great. I know you can build dashboards, et cetera, but there is no quick and easy way. I should be able to download an app, log in, and see my status. That will put this product above everything else out there. I believe it's on their roadmap.""Backward compatibility with deprecated features and in system documentation on what configuration areas are needed to be updated.""At the moment Geneos is excellent and handling real time monitoring, however not great at doing historical reporting.""Much of the reporting outside of the user interface is very basic and requires much customization to be useful.""Data visualization – real time and historical – is a weakness.""Mobile phone integration is probably not as rich as it could be.""The dashboard feature is full of bugs. Grouping items results in a distorted dashboard.""One area where there is room for improvement is the log file. I would like to be able to do a pre-run on the log files. When you are testing log files for regular expressions, it would be good to be able to do a quick check up front on that side of things before you release that into production."

More ITRS Geneos Cons →

"I would like the solution to allow for more direct interaction with computers. I can open tickets and I can see their status, but I can't interact directly with the computers themselves.""There are a lot of disadvantages to Spiceworks because it's not an agent-based solution.""With Spiceworks, like, when I open the websites, I have to Zoom in. I need to zoom in on those websites sometimes because it makes it horrible to use.""I would like to see more information when drilling down into access permissions, assignments management, or tagging. When I click a note or a device, I should be able to see more details about the router and modem. For example, I want to see the version, downtime, availability, latency, etc. I should have easy access to everything about our assets at a glance.""The network mapping could be improved. Putting together an actual bonafide network map would be really nice.""Having an integrated asset management tool, where I can plug in things that are offline, would be good.""Since Spiceworks is a free tool, it's not very scriptable or customizable.""Once a device was recognized on the network, Spiceworks never got rid of it even after you took it off the network. You had to go in and manually remove it."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "You will get the best price if you get a single global deal."
  • "The product is priced quite high. There are pricing options for customers based on the size of the environment and plug-ins used by the monitoring system."
  • "Pricing and licensing is based on the requirements."
  • "The licensing cost may seem expensive upfront. However, the service is outstanding, the tool does things that no other tools can do, and the customizability more than makes up for the cost of licensing."
  • "Pricing is the touchy subject, even here. Upper management always wants us to find a cheaper solution. But we have so much integrated with ITRS... It's expensive, but it does its job very well. And you set it and go."
  • "It is expensive. They have to look at the model around when we move to cloud and how that's going to work. The licensing cost does pay off because of the improvements in support to our business."
  • "When I first came in, their pricing was very high. ITRS had a high expectation of what their price should be based on perceived value. I think they have been realizing, more recently, that there are other competitors, so their pricing is a lot better. Licensing for on-premise is okay, however I feel there is quite some work to be done for cloud and containers. We're still working with them to try and work out what that pricing should look like."
  • "Given our spend and the amount of service we have in it, the pricing is quite reasonable."

  • "The product is free! Get it now."
  • "It's free."
  • "It might be about $300 annually for a bigger company. If you pay annually, it's better and cheaper."
  • "Seeing that it is a low-cost solution, I would advise you to go ahead with Spiceworks and experiment with it to see if you can get things working properly, especially if you currently don't have any existing service desk software in place."
  • "The tool is cheap."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →

Top Answer:I can say it's not that cheap because the licensing is a little bit costly. So, definitely, we had to pay a certain amount to use it.
Top Answer:Speaking about room for improvement, ITRS Geneos is not on the cloud at a time when everyone is moving to the cloud. I definitely know that they have some monitoring extensions or plug-ins for the… more »

Top Answer:The GUI must be improved. The GUI looks old-fashioned. The vendor must do some web development for it.
