We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The predictive performance analytics is a very good feature, as our system is performing better than before.""We've had different types of storage, and three things of this solution are valuable. The first one is its outstanding performance. The second one is its stability. In the about three years that we've had it, we've had component failures, but we never had a service interruption or any data loss. The third one, which is really critical, is that it is super easy to use in terms of provisioning, storage, and managing the arrays. I'm able to maintain a multi-site environment with a couple of dozen arrays with a single mid-level storage admin.""The code upgrades are very smooth.""The performance is very good.""The solution is easy to scale. I'm running two environments right now, so I need to scale. I'm running a part technology. I've got an A-side and a B-side.""One of the features that my customers are really interested in is immutable snapshots. There are immutable snapshots to which your applications can be reverted back if you are hit by some kind of ransomware threat or malicious attack. That's kind of a key deal, and it is one of the selling points I use to point out to my customers the value and the features that Pure Storage brings to the table.""The technical support is very good.""Non-disruptive upgrades: You can upgrade at anytime without worry."

More Pure Storage FlashArray Pros →

"Built-in snapshot support gives us SAN-side functionality most other platforms would have had us license separately.""Logic/software management""The capacity that we're saving by using Kaminario's K2 is giving us a four-to-one ratio for our deduplication.""The speed and, for us in particular in what we're doing, the data de-duplication.""The most valuable feature is definitely the always-on data deduplication.""Inline compression""The most valuable aspect is the use of solid-state storage drives instead of spinning drives.""The GUI is very straightforward and easy to use."

More Kaminario K2 [EOL] Pros →

"We have SQL clusters across the United States. It has sped up our IOPS and made it a lot easier for users.""Our AFF 8040 is currently helping us in terms of response time and speed because it is a flash system. Most importantly, it enables our SQL Cluster to respond to database queries and things a lot faster. It minimizes latency.""The Snapshot, SnapMirror, and SnapRestore functionalities.""The most valuable feature is the ease of management.""Scalability is excellent. If we need more space, it's a no downtime solution. It's harder to get the funding than it is to get the solution itself.""AFF works well for VMware storage.""The most valuable features are the performance and the storage efficiency, due to the compression and deduplication... The efficiency is very important because we can buy fewer disks for more data.""This solution helps accelerate demanding enterprise applications. VMware workloads, the database, and Oracle Solaris are hosted on AFF, which means that our primary priority workloads are on AFF and that the secondary ones are on FAS. That includes the SAN national cloud."

Cons
"They are doing some stuff with containers and an object search. These could be improved, because containers is one of the main topics that we are talking with our customers about.""Just some nit picky stuff, like allowing servers and volumes to be grouped. Therefore, it would easier to work with them in the GUI.""The scalability of the solution is not as good as it probably could be.""It's not so scalable. It's got moderate scaling capabilities right now. The clustering technology needs a bit of work, they need to improve that.""We've had it in place for about a year and a half and have had zero complaints, other than that box-to-box replication is not encrypted.""Its price could be cheaper. It is not the cheapest one out there, but I'm not directly involved in the figures and negotiations.""I would like some form of QoS implemented. As a service provider, it would be beneficial to have it.""I would like to see the NAS add-on component become more fault-tolerant than just a single virtual machine running inside the array. I'm unwilling to use it for that reason."

More Pure Storage FlashArray Cons →

"I would like to see them work with Cisco, so it comes off the FIs, instead of having to go through my 10-gig network.""The interface look and feel could be improved.""A single pane of glass to monitor/manage multiple arrays would be helpful.""I would like to see LDAP for the management panel; I've been notified they might be currently working on it.""The management graphical interface needs more improvement.""I would like them to improve the look of the product’s external casing and shelves.""I would love to see capacity on its DRAM. I know it's not cost effective for them to do it, but I think that it could be a big differentiator and was a big differentiator from the beginning.""The system currently has a 15TB LUN size limit and that snapshots need to be scheduled through script API instead of the GUI."

More Kaminario K2 [EOL] Cons →

"I would like to see an improvement in the high availability of the NFS and CIFS sharing during upgrade and patching; this would help to avoid downtime.""There is room for improvement in terms of support. I have noticed that if I sometimes call their customer care for a particular issue, they will give me another number and ask me to call that other team. It would be better if they could do a warm transfer. That would save customers time from calling all the numbers again and speaking to another team.""NetApp should offer more training so everyone can learn about the products. Other vendors have a lot of training options. It would be great if NetApp would highlight how to use the features more so that every admin or person can gain more knowledge about this technology.""It's a little behind on security. It's starting to get into multi-factor authentication, they just started to introduce it but not for all products.""There needs to be compatibility with upgraded applications. We don't want the system to be upgraded, but not have backwards compatible to existing applications.""The stability is good but there is room for improvement with other options.""The bad part about having scalability is the expense. It is currently extremely expensive, to be able to scale so fast on flash.""It would be great if they had a single pane of glass or a single dashboard where all the NetApp ecosystem storages could be viewed and monitored simply. That would help my Operations."

Is there another storage platform as feature rich as NetApp FAS? I think it is fair to say that NetApp FAS running Clustered Data ONTAP is a very feature rich platform – the move to the clustered version of ONTAP has brought many next-generation features including Scale-out and Non-disruptive Operations. As a benchmark let’s compare FAS to EMC’s solutions – I fully appreciate that EMC has taken a best of breed approach, but my feeling is that for most non-enterprise customers this is not a sustainable strategy – customers want simplicity and ease of use, and you are not going to get that by deploying four different storage platforms to meet your needs. I have chosen EMC because they are the overall market share leader and they have the broadest set of storage products available – so let’s compare FAS with VNX, VPLEX, XtremIO, Isilon and Data Domain: NetApp FAS supports All-Disk, Hybrid Flash and All-Flash data stores - that meet the needs of any kind of application workload The VNX is a very good All-Disk and Hybrid Flash array and XtremIO is a very good All-Flash array, but you need two completely different products to provide the functionality. NetApp FAS eliminates silos and provides seamless scalability - to address Server Virtualisation, Virtual Desktop, Database and File storage needs in one scale-up and scale-out solution, that can start small and grow large VNX is optimal for general Server Virtualisation and Databases and XtremIO excels when it comes to large scale… Read more →

    Reviews from Real Users

NetApp AFF stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its high performance and simplicity. PeerSpot users take note of the advantages of these features in their reviews:

PeerSpot user and Storage Administrator, Daniel Rúnar Friðþjófsson, comments “AFF has helped to simplify our infrastructure, while still getting very high performance for our business-critical applications. Having all these things working well on one solution is really good. We run this as the backbone for both Hyper-V and VMware as well as an archive location for Rubrik. So, it is great having one solution that can do it all.

Because of the ease of it all, you have a highly tunable, high-performance storage system that alleviates a lot of problems. With its ease of management, you can quickly get your work done and go onto the next thing on your list.”

Additionally, Mohan Reddy, Sr. Technology Architect at a Pharma/Biotech company comments on how “NetApp's ONTAP data management software has also made tasks simpler for us. There's no question about that. It has helped us run operations very quickly, saving us a lot of time. Before ONTAP, we used to spend a long time doing regular operations, but with the latest version of the tool, our day-to-day operations are much quicker and easier.”
