We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The interface is very easy to use.""I find Power BI's reporting feature the most valuable. The solution has improved a lot. There are new features getting added day by day. In the past, they didn't even have the printing feature, but now they have it.""The solution is easy to set up and implement.""Microsoft BI was very helpful for me because I had a huge variety of connections. It is very convenient to build reports, even if somebody has no experience using BI tools or data visualizations. Additionally, the performance is very good when generating reports.""The most valuable feature is definitely the visual aspect and the DAX capabilities to virtually do anything.""The scalability overall has been quite good.""The Microsoft Power BI app is very good. It's also very flexible.""The visualization and reporting are the most valuable features of this solution."

"It is a good tool to help our customers visually see loads of data.""I haven't come across any bugs.""The implementation was fairly straightforward.""It is a great tool and has the best offerings for doing data analysis.""It's a stand-alone mobile development app that you don't even have to do business intelligence on. You can just use it to build apps.""I like the user interface and the experience has been great.""There's extensive logging capabilities, if something is wrong then we are able to find out why.""The usability for users to be able to drag and drop, then create their own reports."

Cons
"The solution's documentation needs improvement.""Our expectation is putting BI to work in real-time data collection systems in the maritime environment.""I'm not overly technical, and so I can't really speak to any shortcomings from a technical standpoint.""It needs more graphics and overlays.""From any improvement perspective, I want the product to be made available to users free of cost...The stability and scalability of the product can be better.""It is not the right tool to do deeper analysis or predictions. When you have some data and you want to do some deep analysis, there is no feature to help you with this.""One area for improvement in Microsoft Power BI is serviceability. Compared to one of its competitors: Tableau, there are a lot of things which you cannot do in this tool, that can be done in Tableau.""They can improve it in terms of rule-based security. Currently, it has very limited rules."

"The product could be improved by adding additional visualization.""They need to improve on having more professional, well-equipped premium support.""The analytic speed would probably be what I would look for in terms of improvement because we have super huge data, and if I do not build views on top of data, then reports render really slowly.""I don't think that they will, but I'd like to see parallel processing, scalable parallel processing.""The online community page of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required.""We have seen some stability issues with MicroStrategy on cloud. We have a few unhappy customers.""The In-Memory Capability (cubes) needs a lot of improvement.""They should provide more tutorials and include some project files."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "There is room for at least 45% discount as compared to the initial price."
  • "MS BI comes with all the tools and it is, to the best of my knowledge, the most affordable solution."
  • "All in all, for the price, this is an excellent tool for helping your organization turn mounds of data into useful insights."
  • "I would advise that Microsoft BI products are rightly priced and the licensing is easy to follow and to fulfill."
  • "Remove the cost of a licence to show a dashboard within SharePoint. Why should readers of a dashboard have to pay to view? "
  • "Make it low in cost. It is a no-brainer!"
  • "Globally, we evaluated a number of products, including Salesforce's product, Microsoft won on the ground of simple functionally and cost."
  • "Paid for itself in the first month."

  • "They made a change in the licensing module some time ago and we can now use all the enterprise tools for free."
  • "The pricing for MicroStrategy is always on the higher side. They should seriously start thinking about their pricing and licensing strategy."
  • "While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos."
  • "The price was good. We have had great support along the way."
  • "We actually researched some of the other solutions. For options, price, and customer acceptance, this product has worked well for us."
  • "They gave us a good deal."
  • "There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions."
  • "They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them."
