We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The strongest feature of this solution, is the ability it gives us to carry out deep-packet inspections on our network, particularly when a function isn't performing as it should.""The product is simple to implement.""Packet-capture files can be hard to use due to their size. Wireshark has a tool called tshark that can parse the files with out opening them so that you can take large captures, say 2-10GB, and return only relevant information.""The filter option provided by Wireshark is its most valuable feature...Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.""Wireshark's best features are that it lets us see what traffic is in the network and what data should be encrypted.""I can save the traffic and analysis when I want to. Also, it's especially helpful to follow the stream (TCP, UDP, etc.).""I have found the most valuable feature you can design your sniffer the way you want to.""The transmission and reception issues are valuable."

"It not only provides the preconfigured item monitoring feature, but it is also easy to configure custom items.""The overall functionality of Zabbix is very good. The monitoring of bank applications that Zabbix provides is great. The information is displayed on a dashboard that is easily viewed.""Simple network monitoring that is easy to install and manage.""Our customers also like that they don't have to use multiple modules. Micro Focus and major vendors typically require you to buy several modules and plugins. Our customers do not like that. We offer them a single product for all their monitoring needs.""The most valuable feature is that it provides network segregation for server monitoring.""The best thing about Zabbix is the integration and the APIs that are included are very fast""The most valuable feature is service assurance.""Zabbix is very easy to implement."

Cons
"Wireshark's UI isn't easy to handle and doesn't have as nice a view as Omnipeek.""Wireshark is restricted when any sort of encryption is involved, such as XSL encryption or DLX.""It is not an easy program. You will need to study to use it to its full capabilities (follow a course).""This product needs to improve the UI.""I wish the filters were a little bit more prepopulated.""There is a disadvantage when it comes to sampling intervals. Additionally, I've heard from a colleague that Wireshark might be less effective in the voice domain.""The solution’s user interface could be improved.""The product is great but I wish there were more of an emphasis on the command line tools."

More Wireshark Cons →

"An area for improvement would be the ease of doing aggregation from the value or different devices.""It should be easy to modify the front end.""Zabbix claims that there is an auto-discovery process but my team member was facing difficulty and was told that it's not really automatic, and there are some manual steps.""There are a lot of areas for improvement, specifically in the dashboards and reports functionalities.""I would like to better be able to monitor Oracle processes.""The performance reporting could be improved.""The documentation could be improved.""It would be helpful if they translated the documentation to Cyrillic languages."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
