We can do hourly backups on more systems than ever before, and our RPOs have decreased significantly
As a long-time Commvault customer, we still use the Java console heavily because it is how we learned to do everything. The web-based Command Center is coming along and has most of what we need, but it is a learning process to change our knowledge to the new way of doing things. As Commvault continues to grow SaaS data protection options, there are some that are on my wish list that have not yet made their roadmap. Knowing what is being worked on for future support would be great we can keep that in mind as we are looking at future technologies to adopt.

It's a user-friendly solution that helps us migrate our customers from their local servers
When you finish a project, the client should have the opportunity to browse the files rather than simply ending the contract. Also, it's not possible to recover earlier versions. It should be possible to have a database for recovering files after you finish a contract. There's no solution for this from Veritas. The clients pay annually for the product, but when they decide to cancel the contract after five or six years, how do they get older versions of their data? Veritas only offers a snapshot of the last backup. They also no longer offer the Veritas for Microsoft 365 solution in Brazil. We have to find another solution for 365 at the end of the year, so we are going with N-Able.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a scalable solution."
"I can collect the target data, then we connect it to Commvault. There is not another system that can connect to our target database or target storage. This is very important for us, because there is the threat of malware right now. This can protect not only the product, but also the backup data from outside threats."
"It's great for getting data back."
"The solution includes the best compatibility metrics for integration and they are managed by Google support."
"Commvault HyperScale X is also a good choice for regulations that require the backup system to be isolated from the rest of the infrastructure."
"Commvault can actually come in and assist you with aspects of the implementation - and they are quite helpful."
"This solution gives me the full insight without having to use other products, metrics, or reporting tools."
"The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms"
"he most valuable feature is that it's not so intrusive with computer resources."
"I think the most important feature is the ability of SaaS Backup to cover all modules proposed by Office 365, because competing solutions don't cover the total scope."
"The duplication is the solution's most valuable feature."
"The solution is stable; I haven't experienced any bugs or glitches on it."
"What I like most about Veritas SaaS Backup is that it is easy to work on."
"It's a good solution. It's pretty stable."
"Veritas is loaded with features because the appliance is ready to integrate with the cloud in cases where the customers have a hybrid or cloud environment."
"The most valuable features are the ease of administration and the ease of configuration."

Cons

"The tool should revise its licensing."
"Commvault HyperScale X is more expensive for hybrid environments than traditional solutions."
"The product is expensive."
"They can improve the VMware recovery and VMware backup. There is an improvement area on the VMware infrastructure. They can make available what they call a VSA proxy. They can have an appliance-type setup to deploy VSA backups and help recover quicker. They can have an appliance ready. Instead of having to have a server dedicated to that and installing software on a server, they can just provide an actual appliance for that."
"The functional integration could be better."
"The only problem is that some of what we snap most of is the VMs. We found about 10% of the VMs that we can't snap because they're too interactive. It actually causes the application to crash."
"You can't change Metallic's retention policies without contacting the Commvault support team."
"The reporting could be improved because the reports we get from our partner aren't sufficient. It isn't very detailed. I'm not sure if it's an issue with our partner or Metallic. They do a full backup on Monday and incremental backups throughout the week. However, we don't get detailed reports about the size of the incremental backups. The report just tells us whether a backup was successful."
"When you finish a project, the client should have the opportunity to browse the files rather than simply ending the contract. Also, it's not possible to recover earlier versions. It should be possible to have a database for recovering files after you finish a contract. There's no solution for this from Veritas."
"The solution does lack a lot of features, and we're considering switching."
"An area for improvement is the product's performance, especially how long it takes to do a job."
"The technical team wasn't very helpful."
"Licensing has been a struggle. It went from bronze, silver to gold. Licensing needs more sophistication. It has features that are sold as separate add-ons."
"The go-between is a Veritas partner, so the customer support was not that good. The solution is fine except when there is a purchasing crisis where you have to remake the ecosystem. It causes a lot of issues. The support was a problem, but we're okay with it as long as we have someone to communicate with."
"Currently, it isn't possible to use anything other than Veritas cloud to back up to. I think today it's important to cover the three major cloud provider: GCP, Azure and AWS."
"The backup reports and the dashboard need improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I looked at this at the beginning of the year and I don't remember what the prices were for all the other services, but I thought that Metallic's was fair. It was also highly rated, which was even more important than cost because I need a reliable, secure, backup method."
"The tool is cost-effective."
"The tool is affordable."
"The pricing is fairly in line with the other products we've compared it with recently. We do spend more on it than we did in our Backup Exec days, but it's fairly competitive with some of the other best-in-class data protection platforms."
"I rate the product’s pricing a five out of ten."
"If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
"Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte."
"The licensing costs are determined on a yearly basis. It might be around $40,000 or $50,000. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
"This solution is not cheap and not expensive but priced in the mid-range."
"The program is quite expensive."
"SaaS Backup isn't the most expensive solution."
"I would rate this solution's pricing as five out of five."
