A versatile tool for load balancing and traffic management in different environments
The main use cases are for load balancing and limiting traffic. It is utilized as a front-end server for balancing HTTP traffic, as well as for balancing traffic between application servers and database servers like Redis and Elasticsearch. HAProxy is employed for both HTTP and TCP load balancing…

Provides traffic management and its mutual TLS authentication helps control the access policies
Since it was an authentic application, we were handling the payments part. It was easy to debug, and Service A communicated to Service B. There were approximately 20 microservices inside the service mesh. Using Istio's observability feature, we could easily find out where the service was breaking, which saved us a lot of time. I would recommend the solution to other users. If you want to save time on the security application coding, move to Istio. It's a very helpful tool for debugging if you're working with microservices. The solution is also helpful for any service break and traffic management. Overall, I rate Istio a nine out of ten.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"HAProxy potentially has a good return on investment"
"HAProxy Enterprise Edition has been rock solid. We have essentially had no downtime caused by our load balancers in the last 10 months, because they’ve worked so well. Previously, our load balancers caused us multiple hours per year in downtime."
"It is a crucial tool in ensuring smooth service provision without any interruptions."
"The most valuable thing for me is TCP/IP Layer 4 stuff you can do with HAProxy. You can go down to the protocol level and make decisions on something."
"It improves our scalability and responsiveness services to meet our demanding customer requirements."
"Stability is number one."
"The support for all major Linux distros makes running and testing a breeze."
"The feature that I have found the most valuable is that it works for my use case of application load balancing. I'm using it for PeerSense, and it's easy enough for PeerSense."
"The load balancing, service application, and monitoring of the life of the service are valuable features. We use it for authentication of call services, load balancing the calls among the service providers on service instances, and monitoring the health of the services."
"We use Istio for Service Discovery and routing traffic."
"Istio can save you time in terms of network troubleshooting."
"The tool's mutual TLS stands out. It provides secure communication between services within the cluster. Additionally, Istio offers built-in telemetry and tracing with tools like Jaeger, which aids monitoring and troubleshooting."
"Istio's best feature is that it's easy to use."
"The most valuable features of Istio are the traffic management and the Sidecar they inject, which greatly helps secure the application."

Cons

"The logging functionality could use improvement, as it is a little cryptic."
"There is room for improvement in HAProxy's dynamic configuration."
"HAProxy could improve by making the dashboards easier to use, and better reports and administration tickets."
"We need to handle new connections by dropping, or queuing them while the HAProxy restarts, and because HAProxy does not handle split config files."
"There is no standardized document available. So, any individual has to work from scratch to work it out. If some standard deployment details are available, it would be helpful for people while deploying it. There should be more documentation on the standard deployment."
"Documentation could be improved."
"There is room for improvement in the pricing model. It could be cheaper."
"Maybe HAProxy could be more modular."
"Istio needs to be more mature and user-friendly."
"If you're a beginner in infrastructure management and networking, learning Istio might pose some challenges. However, if you have some knowledge of networking or service meshes, you should find it manageable. Istio's website offers documentation to guide you through learning."
"For our use case that we applied it to, there were graph queues and the calls that were coming in. There were the things that we couldn't apply at the time, but it kind of worked."
"Istio's documentation is basic and would benefit from more examples."
"It would be good if the solution had more community forums."
"If someone doesn't understand Kubernetes, they'll have issues working with Istio."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"HAProxy is free software. There are optional paid products (support/appliances)."
"We use NGINX as well. However, because the health checks are a paid feature, I like to avoid it whenever possible."
"HAProxy is free open-source software."
"The only cost is for the image manager, who is responsible for uploading the image, and that is trivial."
"HAProxy is a free open-source solution."
"The price is well worth it. HAProxy Enterprise Edition paid for itself within months, simply due to the resiliency it brings. It was a bit more expensive than we were originally interested in paying, but we are thankful we chose to go with HAProxy."
"When it comes to pricing HAProxy is free."
"It is free of cost."
"You can deploy Istio free of cost and don't need to pay for it."
"It is on the less expensive side. It provides a significant saving for us in terms of cost and other things. It is open-source. We just download it from the open-source framework and use it."
"We use the tool's open-source version, so there are no hidden fees or additional costs associated with it."
