Integration capabilities are good, and handles connectivity between applications and databases
Network Deployment is the most useful feature for scalability. It has many features within the standard WebSphere Application Server edition. WebSphere's security meets our application's needs. For security, we can integrate WebSphere with LDAP. Additionally, we can configure SSO certificates or third-party certificates for secure communication between our application and even the database. We can use SSL certificates to secure both frontend and backend connections. Combined with LDAP and SSL certificates, the security features are excellent. Integration capabilities are good. That's a key strength of WebSphere. It integrates easily with various other software vendors, which is why many companies use it.

Central console enables us to see all of the activated and deactivated computers but it has poor alerts and frustrating technical support
The solution needs to allow for other company product licenses to be included if possible. The solution needs to include other Microsoft products, like Exchange, SharePoint, etc. Right now, it's only for Windows and Office. The solution needs to be made web-based. Right now, we have to install some tools and to use these tools we have to log into a specific server. If that server has an issue we cannot manage it. The solution needs to be able to be managed from any machine. Alerting capabilities should be improved. If a license expires or there is a breach, or something is non-compliant, the solution should send out alerts.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features are its user-friendliness and reliability in terms of application hosting."
"The VPN service is quite useful."
"The performance is good."
"IBM WebSphere Application Server is the best in terms of scalability and performance, as well as the support for managing distributed transactions."
"Ease of administration: It has an Integrated Solutions Console, what we call the administrative console, with very detailed configurations and Help pages for each configurable item."
"This solution is easy to use with a GUI that is intuitive and very helpful."
"Without the Admin Console it would be very hard to configure JVM settings, JDBC datasources, mail session settings, and security providers."
"WebSphere Application Server's best features include the data subscription and connection viewer."
"The most valuable aspect of the solution is the central console, that allows you to see all of the activated and deactivated computers."

Cons

"The footprint could be reduced so that we can use a smaller virtual machine to run the application. We could also use more scripts. I would like this solution to be more script oriented, rather than GUI oriented."
"They should make the solution more lightweight and not bundle everything into a single product."
"In the next release of this solution, I would like to see support for the Arabic language."
"The solution consumes hardware."
"What could be improved in IBM WebSphere Application Server is its interconnection with other products, for example, Kafka. What I'd like to see in the next release of the solution is a better graphical user interface."
"The licensing could be improved, and I would like it to give the longevity of the lifespan of the visions. In the next release, I would like to be able to download and extract the files so that I can just use my application server."
"When compared with WebLogic, Weblogic is lighter and consumes less memory."
"The solution could improve the integration."
"The stability of the solution needs improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is quite expensive."
"We used to pay about $100,000-$120,000 US or somewhere around there. That was a bit cost-prohibitive for us to continue."
"It is very expensive."
"If your application is just a web app that does not need to scale big, you can obtain a single core license of WAS Express edition, which has almost the same features with limited processing cores. If you manage a very big application farm (i.e. need to run 10 or more WAS servers) it is better to get IBM WAS Hypervisor Edition."
"WebSphere Application Server is expensive, so it may not be a good option for small companies."
"The price of this product is higher than that of competitors."
"The licensing policy is based on the PVU base."
"My company is on a perpetual or permanent license agreement with IBM WebSphere Application Server. There's also a pay-per-use option, but customers rarely choose that option. Most of the customers are on the perpetual license deal that's all-inclusive. As the license cost is quite expensive, I'm rating it two out of five."

It's expensive. I'd rate the pricing nine out of ten, with one being inexpensive and ten being expensive.

While WebSphere mostly supports IBM HTTP Server (IHS) as the web server plugin, I think it would be beneficial if it also supported Apache and NGINX web servers. That would give customers more flex...
