Excellent for extracting technical metadata, but tricky to scale
The primary use case of this solution is to extract technical metadata, tag the data dictionary, and profiling. We also use it for lineage and relationship aspects I recommend Informatica to my clients based in the finance and banking sectors. It has been very helpful. The most valuable feature…

Easy to use data models, highly reliable, and straightforward setup
SAP PowerDesigner could improve by making the repository easier to understand. It is difficult to understand how the repository works because when I used logical models as part of the team, we wanted to use them together and update the older versions of the data model version but it was confusing. The repository needs to be explained. It would be helpful to have a checking system on the objects that are generated from the physical data model on the specific database to help see if there is a difference on the database side and on the SAP PowerDesigner documentation side.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It can automatically connect or associate business terms with various options, providing flexibility beyond general capabilities."
"The metadata management of Informatica is great."
"I rate the technical support a ten out of ten."
"The capability of the tool to scan and capture the metadata from a variety of sources is one of the capabilities that I find most useful. The central repository into which it is going to put that captured metadata is the best."
"The product seems stable enough."
"The solution scales well."
"The most valuable feature of Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog is it provides clients with a full view of the enterprise data assets. For example, how many data assets they have and who owns them."
"I like EDC's self-service capabilities. You can put the catalog on the intranet inside the organization, so users can search for something. People in the research world have specialized systems, and you might find data from various places that sound similar."
"The initial setup was very easy."
"SAP PowerDesigner is an excellent tool that does what I need it to do. What I like most about it is that it's stable, fast, and easy to understand."
"This solution has good tools for big data, where you can manage large and complex databases."
"It has helped me to develop the as-is state, design its to-be state, and track the capital investment according to gap analysis."
"It's a stable system. It never crashes."
"The most valuable features of SAP PowerDesigner are the creation the flow charts and folders. It is a powerful tool."
"It offers a lot of features in one solution. You would have to get multiple other products to bundle together all of the capabilities that you get in just this product."
"The most valuable features of the solution are it's built very well, easy to use, and simple to describe freely what is needed in logical and physical data models."

Cons

"IEDC can improve the comparison of lineages."
"The scalability is tough."
"It is not easy to set up and configure the tool."
"This solution is hard to set up and its interface is not user-friendly. It's also not as stable, and the technical support takes a lot of time to solve simple problems."
"The UI is extremely complex"
"It is more complicated to extract data using the product compared to Visio. The system could display the details on the screen."
"The model is somewhat flexible. There are certain aspects of the model that are not as flexible as we would like. It doesn't do certain things to a great level of depth. So, in situations where we want to drill in to do something specific, we have to essentially copy that data into our own structures in order to add that additional layer of flexibility."
"Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog could improve by having a much better user interface. It is not user-friendly."
"SAP PowerDesigner can improve the ease of use. It is not the best tool on the market because it is tough to navigate and use. A beginner would not be able to use it well, it requires some experience. If the solution was more user-friendly it would be able to be used by more audiences. I do not think many people are aware of this solution and they should use it."
"There should be a better usage of current hardware including multicore CPUs, higher resolutions, and multiple displays."
"SAP PowerDesigner could improve by making the repository easier to understand. It is difficult to understand how the repository works because when I used logical models as part of the team, we wanted to use them together and update the older versions of the data model version but it was confusing. The repository needs to be explained."
"This product does not have a good BPMN Modeler."
"The data governance should be improved, like ER/Studio."
"The solution is very, very expensive. It would be ideal if it was a more affordable product."
"The user interface could be more user-friendly."
"UI could be improved by enabling simpler navigation."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I have no idea what the price actually is. It is probably not going to be the cheapest, but it is a pretty stable and robust platform from the backend standpoint."
"I rate the product's pricing a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive."
"It's a costly solution"
"I bought the software outright and do not pay a licensing fee."
"The pricing varies based on functionality and users."
"SAP PowerDesigner is cheaper than eriwin."
"I would like SAP to prove free licenses to professionals that are using the solution. The free version is limited."
"Regarding costs, SAP PowerDesigner is pricey, as I've heard from my team manager, which is why the company has been thinking of bringing another solution on board."
"When you purchase the license for SAP PowerDesigner, you have to buy one year of support. The tool is worth the money."
"The price of the solution is low."
"The price of the solution is too expensive. When we asked for certain licenses in different countries it was unattainable."
