We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Good load balancing feature.""The solution is extremely reliable.""It can expand easily.""Fortinet FortiGate appears to be scalable.""The CLI is robust and powerful, enabling rapid, consistent changes via SSH.""We use a lot of function on the IPS and it works well for us.""I think that the UTM features are the most value, as it truly protects my infrastructure.""Fortigate is very scalable to serve our customers' needs. We have scaled already from fifty to more than a hundred instances of Fortinet FortiGate. Around 20 staff are required for deployment and maintenance, mostly engineers."

"Cisco ASA Firewall is a well known product. They're always updating it, and you know what they're doing and that it works.""Firepower has been used for quite a few enterprise clients. Most of our clients are Fortune 500 and Firepower is used to improve their end to end firewall functionality.""It allowed us to consolidating multiple security devices into a single appliance.""Cisco Secure Firewall has improved our customers' security posture because it offers Next-Gen features, granularity, and reporting on the back of it. You can see the amount of users accessing Office 365, for example, and whether they're having a good or bad experience. You can see the threats that are coming into your network. You can see anyone who is compromised from within your network.""Basic firewalling is obviously the most valuable. In addition to that, secure access and remote access are also very useful for us.""We find all of its features very useful. Its main features are policies and access lists. We use both of them, and we also use routing.""I like that it is easy to change the settings.""REST API offering with rich capabilities which makes the product very robust."

"We make use of the new data center, specifically the containerized data center which is built and reviewed by Huawei, including all the device's infrastructure.""The solution's initial setup process is easy.""The solution's implementation is pretty easy.""The most useful feature is the performance of the firewalls and networking operations.""I had no difficulty using the Huawei NGFW.""The security is good. It's as effective as anything else on the market.""Huawei was able to assist us in the installation of their product. The installation was very fast.""It enables us to configure different policies and restrictions for specific users within the same subnet."

Cons
"Fortinet needs more memory to save the log files. We need it to save the logs on the hardware and not in the cloud. I know this feature is available in FortiCloud, but if we need this log locally, it is not available.""FortiLink is the interface on the firewall that allows you to extend switch management across all of your switches in the network. The problem with it is that you can't use multiple interfaces unless you set them up in a lag. Only then you can run them. So, it forces you to use a core type of switch to propagate that management out to the rest of the switches, and then it is running the case at 200. It leaves you with 18 ports on the firewall because it is also a layer-three router that could also be used as a switch, but as soon as you do that, you can't really use them. They could do a little bit more clean up in the way the stacking interface works. Some use cases and the documentation on the FortiLink checking interface are a little outdated. I can find stuff on version 5 or more, but it is hard to find information on some of the newer firmware. The biggest thing I would like to see is some improvement in the switch management feature. I would like to be able to relegate some of the ports, which are on the firewall itself, to act as a switch to take advantage of those ports. Some of these firewalls have clarity ports on them. If I can use those, it would mean that I need to buy two less switches, which saves time. I get why they don't, but I would still like to see it because it would save a little bit of space in the server rack.""In the next release, maybe the documentation on how to use this solution could be improved.""There aren't really any negative aspects to discuss.""Cisco Meraki products are rising very quickly in the cloud and the connected era. Meraki products offer much better ROI, upgradability, and manageability.""The solution could be more evenly structured.""Technical support is good but the response time could be faster.""Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having more storage in the hardware for log data."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The dashboard can be improved.""The user interface is a little clunky and difficult to work with. Some things aren't as easy as they should be.""I would like to see the inclusion of more advanced antivirus features in the next release of this solution.""It is a good firewall, though not NextGen.""Setting it up is not as intuitive as other more modern NGFWs.""I would like it to have faster deployment times. A typical deployment could take two to three minutes. Sometimes, it depends on the situation. It is better than it was in the past, but it could always use improvement.""I would like to see the inclusion of a protocol that can be used to protect databases.""I don't have any specific improvements to recommend. However, when you compare the throughput of a Cisco firewall to the competitors, especially Fortinet, what you find is that Cisco has lagged a little bit behind in terms of firewall throughput, especially for the price that you pay for that throughput."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"The solution does not have sandboxing features.""The WAF capability in the Huawei Firewall is missing.""The tool lacks features.""With the Huawei firewall, none of the features comes at the top. We found out later that customer support is really not good. For this firewall, because of our customers' routine, for example, every six months they'll do a penetration test to find weaknesses. So whenever they came up with VAPT reports, they are looking to Huawei for help. I think that's basically because it's a different culture. Chinese culture and our culture is different. They have always tried to help find some excuses or say some other things that cannot help you solve the problem immediately.""The solution requires a more interactive dashboard. That would make it easier than playing with configurations the way we have to now.""The solution isn't cheap. It's market price.""One issue is integration. Huawei can't detect Indicators of Compromise (IoC). I can get a lot of information about security, but can't automatically input the EP, domain URL, and file hashes I get from Hackersworld into my blocklist.""The IPS feature must be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."

  • "Licensing fees are billed on an annual basis."
  • "The price of the license of this solution is high."

  • "I believe that we are entitled to a one-year extension on our licensing."
  • "The solution isn't cheap. It's market price."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
