We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable features of Commvault HyperScale X are all the general functions and the performance.""It is much more scalable and flexible than everything else in the market.""Commvault helps to ensure broad coverage with the discovery of unprotected workloads. This is important. From the moment that we set it up, we mostly have customers telling us what they need to back up. Then, you can list the machines that are not yet protected. Sometimes, we can see that they are unaware of this, and say, "We didn't know that those servers were not protected yet," or "We did not back them up yet."""The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover our data across on-premise locations. Some of the guys have been using it to move a virtual machine from VMware to the Microsoft solution, Hyper-V. They back it up and then they restore to the different virtual machine provider, and that works great.""The recovery features are useful. It is easy to recover data. If something happens, we can easily recover data. We have faced ransomware issues twice, and we recovered because of Commvault.""We can use it on-premises and in the cloud.""What I find valuable is restoring the complete server. Restoring files is also valuable, but I like restoring the server because you don't have to rebuild a new one.""The diversity on offer is very, very good. Everything is supported. It's great."

"The most valuable features are the backup and restore. With this in place along with the clustering, the database is safe from hacking, hardware failure, power failures, and system crashes.""Another valuable feature is the possibility of backing up the database from the standby database instead of the primary database, to avoid backup process overhead in the primary system.""One of the most valuable features is real-time replication. The version we're using is reliable and easy to deploy.""Data Guard also improved because customers with an active Data Guard license want to reduce the I/O in a production environment. Some application complaints to it for Oracle reporting purposes. It has a production environment that needs to be enhanced.""We chose this solution for the availability of the databases. We can't afford Oracle Grid, this is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive.""We use Data Guard for online replication from data center, to data center for high availability. This is the most important feature.""Oracle Data Guard has a nice feature called the DataGuard snapshot to open the solution in the read-write mode and make some changes to the database.""With Data Guard, Oracle guarantees zero data loss, providing peace of mind for organizations relying on their data for critical operations."

Cons
"There could be improvements to the backup failures.""Commvault's price is quite high.""I just wanted to compare the features, which are there in EMC NetWorker, which are not available in Commvault. We have things using Networker.""We get an alarm if a lot of files are deleted, for example. That could look like ransomware, even if it is not.""I would like to have a manager-level dashboard to review the backups. This is not from an administrative perspective where you can see the details of the execution. Rather, it would only show the percentage of completeness for each one.""The tool should revise its licensing.""You need quite a lot of human resources to maintain a Commvault environment, to keep it operational. Also, it would be nice to if there were an easier way set up some Commvault components.""The new HTML5-based management portals are very nice, but do not yet have all of the features of the Java-based client."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"The database administration needs improvement. With Oracle, we have a lot of features for administrating data, but it might be too many. It needs to be simplified. It should be automated. Looking at Enterprise Manager, there are too many KPIs in place.""The deployment cost is expensive.""We would like to be able to see the date time stamp when you execute DGMGRL commands.""A significant improvement for Oracle Data Guard would be enabling the disaster recovery site to handle read and write operations, not just data storage.""Sometimes, the technical support team takes time to respond.""For every standby server you have, you must pay a licensing fee, which is the main disadvantage.""The pricing of the solution is quite high. They should do what they can to bring it down so that it is more reasonable for customers like us.""They may need to include the monitoring and the alerting part in Data Guard."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "The cost of the Oracle license will depend on the negotiations with Oracle."
