We performed a comparison between DD Boost and NetApp AltaVault based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Deduplication Software solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."DD Boost can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization. All resources are utilized efficiently. Without such optimization, backup processes can lead to bottlenecks or excessive resource utilization, impacting server services."
"The most valuable feature is the support for plug-ins."
"The functionality is very good. DD Boost and DD entry replication are used in almost all backup concepts. Those are the most used features."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is deduplication."
"Very stable solution."
"The dependable protocol and stability of DD Boost are its most valuable characteristics. We encountered no connectivity issues when connecting the backup appliance to DD Boost, and we received no customer complaints about this aspect. Primarily, the smooth communication and connectivity between the server and storage were the main strengths."
"We can retain the data for a pretty long time."
"Data Domain Boost has a unique protocol. I don't think with other vendors you get the same efficiency. I work with some the other products, but this solution has amazing efficiency in comparison."
"It's so easy to work with."
"The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data."
"It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it."
"Its initial setup is easy."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications."
"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."
"Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored."
"This solution should cover more platforms, and there should be more product coverage."
"I'd like the be able to deploy the solution on SAN backups."
"Integration could be better."
"My customer was interested in ransomware protection. Currently, Dell offers the Cyber Vault solution, which is separate from Data Domain. Ideally, ransomware protection would be integrated directly within DD Boost, without requiring an additional out-of-the-box solution. This feature is currently available with HPE's Zerto and Huawei's Ocean Protect with third-party products like PradoNet. While Cyber Vault exists as a separate solution from Data Domain, having some standard protection for immutable backups into DD Boost would be a valuable addition and make it more competitive with other vendors."
"The solution must provide better deduplication."
"There are some limitations where you cannot use it as a shared server or as a file server, it is limited for the only backup."
"It would be nice if they could have the same tool set right from the smallest to the biggest modules, but being specific frame dependent."
"When my company faced a problem with the product, it took some time to get proper support."
"I would like to see more web support."
"It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture."
"NetApp's own competing products complicate things."
"The initial setup phase of the tool was difficult."
"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."
"More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out."
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."
