Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Nagios XI is a simple monitoring tool with performance management.""The most valuable feature is the dashboard, where I can have a single screen that provides a summary for hundreds of servers.""The most useful aspect of this solution is the ability to customize it for the client agent.""The features I've found the most useful are the plug-ins, the fact that you can connect almost everything to it. That's very useful.""Nagios XI helped me to draw the network and check for system failures.""The ability to set up templates and groups of checks, as well as customize the checks themselves.""The installation is no problem. I've installed Nagios several times.""This is a very good solution and it is simple to use, for any company."

"The transmission and reception issues are valuable.""Packet-capture files can be hard to use due to their size. Wireshark has a tool called tshark that can parse the files with out opening them so that you can take large captures, say 2-10GB, and return only relevant information.""The best part about Wireshark, in my opinion, is its ability to analyze packet capture files.""I can save the traffic and analysis when I want to. Also, it's especially helpful to follow the stream (TCP, UDP, etc.).""It has good basic features.""The product is simple to implement.""It's easy to troubleshoot issues because there's a large online community.""The strongest feature of this solution, is the ability it gives us to carry out deep-packet inspections on our network, particularly when a function isn't performing as it should."

Cons
"Nagios XI can improve network and hardware monitoring, these parameters should be simplified to allow usage for monitoring. Additionally, if there was automatic reporting it would be helpful.""The installation and monitoring need improvement.""We'd like to see more integration capabilities.""I would like to see support for notification via SMS.""I would like to be able to extend it to all of our data centers, whether they are in the cloud or not. It would be helpful if I could connect everywhere.""Technical support is an area that needs improvement. It is not available 24/7.""The reporting part should be made simpler. While we can obtain all the reports we need, we always have to create work-arounds to get them.""The Configuration Wizard needs improvement, because not all vendors are present."

More Nagios XI Cons →

"In the future, it would be nice to see color coding. It is just black and white.""Wireshark is similar to an OS defense tool, meaning that it runs on an OS such as Ubuntu and Fedora, but I'm unsure if it's compatible with Windows or if it's a straightforward process to run it on Windows. Right now, my team needs to run Wireshark from a dongle to use it, so it's an OS-dependable tool, and that's an area for improvement. I was unable to use Wireshark on Windows, and I couldn't capture it, as I'm unsure how to configure the wireless card into monitoring mode on Windows. The process was straightforward on Linux, but it wasn't the case on Windows OS. It seems Wireshark isn't compatible with all OS. For example, you can analyze the log, and you can analyze it on the Windows server, but you can't do a capture in Windows. Configuring Wireshark for Windows isn't as easy as configuring it for Linux.""It needs the ability to follow multiple interfaces for specific traffic from different network zones/virtual networks. It would help to understand how any packet is going through the network.""Sometimes I need to use tcpdump when I need to check the packets on CLI.""Its user interface was a little less friendly. They can make its user interface a little bit more friendly. It is for technical people, and most of the technical people would be able to figure it out, but it would be good to improve its user interface. They can maybe build artificial intelligence into it. Currently, it takes a lot of manpower to analyze and dissect all the data.""I would like to see Wireshark improve the ease of application of the command. The command is very powerful, but not easy to apply.""The average person would probably find Wireshark hard to use. When I first installed it, I was overwhelmed by all the data it was shooting out. It doesn't make sense until you start doing some research and figure out what everything means. It isn't the most user-friendly tool. It just provides so much information.""The only thing that I don't like is sometimes there is an update, and something that I was using is either no longer there or it has changed."

    Anonymous User
I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
