We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The initial setup was relatively easy, and we didn't have to install anything. All we had to do was put on the devices we wanted to monitor.""Solarwinds has an open database that allows you to do serious integrations. It doesn't matter which service desk you have, you can implement and integrate it with SolarWinds.""The features like trends, capacity planning, recommendations, and diagnostics are the main items I focus on for added value.""The product integrates with Remedy.""SSL Certificate Monitoring and Expiry Alerting""I adore the NTA module that provides deep details on ingress/egress traffic for any interface. With a few clicks, you can correlate who is accessing what and when, beside the bandwidth consuming applications/users.""Hardware health: It allows for proactive monitoring of the hardware health and is a game changer.""SolarWinds SAM has provided us with dynamic thresholds based on historical trends and requirements. The threshold gets configured automatically, so it's no longer necessary to configure it manually every time."

"The technical support has been very good. They are very responsive and have been helpful.""The varied prebuilt feature is the most valuable because it ensures that we have complete coverage over all of the key questions.""The most valuable features of the solution are it is straightforward to use and the documentation is good for finding out how to get the data you are looking for.""We have created a few custom use cases for Splunk that have helped us detect threats faster. For example, we set up endpoint-related data models and specialized setups for various scenarios. It's more efficient than some other products I've used.""The level of robustness on offer is very good.""The client site login is pretty extensible and probably cost-effective.""The most valuable feature of Splunk Enterprise Security is the comprehensive logging capabilities it provides.""Splunk provides immediate visibility into key business metrics and new business insights that deliver immediate value."

Cons
"They should incorporate more artificial intelligence. There should also be more predictive features.""PerfStack can be made more effective. I am sure SolarWinds already has a plan for the same in coming versions.""Support for the IBM Mainframe is needed.""SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor could improve the server monitoring and the web application monitoring features are not good. Microsoft SCOM has better server monitoring.""It needs time-based functions for monitoring. Some things need to be polled on a specific schedule or only during a specific window.""Some custom applications cannot be monitored, and a lot more applications need to be included.""This product has no real downside unless they fail to continue development of its capabilities.""The tool’s report feature created issues for us. We needed to gain skills to use that feature. The tool’s customization is not easy since you have to reconfigure the whole system."

"Its pricing model and integration with third-party services can be improved. We had faced an issue with integration. The alerting feature is currently not available with Splunk, but it is definitely available with Datadog and PagerDuty. They should include this feature. A few dashboards in Splunk look quite old and are not that modern. They aren't bad, but improving these dashboards will definitely make Splunk more attractive and usable. I read in a few blog posts that there were a few security incidents related to Splunk agents. So, it can be made more secure.""In terms of the interface, it could include some improvements for the look and feel.""The setup time is quite long.""Endpoint access is the only issue I can think to mention, even though the endpoint access we have with Cisco is fine.""The configuration could be better.""Missing capability for audio/video and image processing.""Its interface and usability can always be improved.""The product's price may be an area of concern where improvements are required."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I have always said SolarWinds is very “proud” of their products, meaning they are expensive. I cannot afford to purchase all the licenses I need for all the SolarWinds products."
  • "When planning for the number of licenses to purchase, make sure you understand all of the elements within an application required to really understand performance well. In our case, we quickly came to the conclusion that an unlimited license for SAM was the way to go."
  • "Nagios XI, WhatsUpGold, Uptime Software, PRTG, Manage Engine, and SpiceWorks are the other tools that have lower pricing and licensing costs. However, they can't compete with SolarWinds when it comes to the features and functionality that SolarWinds can provide."
  • "I would advise potential buyers to wait until the end of the quarter, end of year, or other time to place orders. There are actually great deals to be had at those times if your budget cycle can match up."
  • "Pricing and licensing is fair for what you get. It does have a great bang-for-the-buck appeal."
  • "SAM is not per server so the pricing model can be deceiving. If you have an enterprise environment, you will quickly exceed your licensing quickly. You should know this before going in."
  • "Understanding the counts of objects to monitor will determine the licensing need. In terms of pricing, it’s not cheap but it’s not expensive as larger vendors whose products don’t have all the features or integrations."
  • "The product might cost you $30,000 USD to buy, but scaling this solution requires the purchase of additional polling engines at $20,000 USD each."

  • "Pricing and licensing is quite expensive. But for the value the product provides, it seems at par in the market."
  • "Although Splunk is an expensive product, it is designed to be utilized across your organization in order to maximize your ROI and lower your TCO."
  • "It is not cheap."
  • "Splunk Enterprise becomes extremely expensive after the 20GB/month license."
  • "You will eat up whatever you purchase quickly. The level of insights that Splunk empowers is addictive."
  • "Splunk licensing model might seem expensive but with all the gain in functionalities you will have compared to traditional SIEM solutions I think it’s worth the price."
  • "Pricing is pretty fair."
  • "While licensing can be a concern, there are ways to reduce the licensing costs including filtering some events."
