We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The system automatically sizes and moves resources based on the needs of the applications.""The automated memory balancing, where it looks at whether it's being used in the most efficient way and adds or takes away memory, is the best part. If it didn't do that, it would be something that I would have to do. We have too many machines for one person to do that. The automation helps me in that it is done in a really efficient way and a balanced way because of the policies. It really helps.""It became obvious to us that there was a lot more being offered in the product that we could leverage to ensure our VMware environment was running efficiently.""I have the ability to automate things similar to the Orchestrator stuff. I do have the ability to have it do some balancing, and if it sees some different performance metrics that I've set not being met, it'll actually move some of my virtual machines from, let's say, one host to another. It is sort of an automation tool that helps me. Basically, I specify the metric, and if I get a certain host or something being over-utilized, it'll automatically move the virtual machines around for me. It basically has to snap into my vCenter and then it can make adjustments and move my virtual machines around. It also has some very nice reporting tools built around virtual machines. It tells you how much storage, memory, or CPU is being used monthly, and then it gives you a very nice way to be able to send out billing structure to your end users who use servers within your environment.""The most valuable features are the cluster utilization reports and the resource capacity planning. We can simulate how much capacity we can add to the current resources. The individual DM reports and VM-facing recommendations report are also helpful.""We like that Turbonomic shows application metrics and estimates the impact of taking a suggested action. It provides us a map of resource utilization as part of its recommendation. We evaluate and compare that to what we think would be appropriate from a human perspective to that what Turbonomic is doing, then take the best action going forward.""The notifications saying, "This is a corrective action," even though some of them can be automated, are always welcome to see. They summarize your entire infrastructure and how you can better utilize it. That is the biggest feature.""I like the analytics that help us optimize compatibility. Whereas Azure Advisor tells us what we have to do, Turbonomic has automation which actually does those things. That means we don't have to be present to get them done and simplifies our IT engineers' jobs."

"I like the tool's backup.""The most valuable features are the notifications, which give us failure alerts for some infrastructure within the backup, and the reporting is excellent.""The solution's customer service is good.""The solution is very user-friendly.""As a manager, I find Veeam One's reporting service to be very helpful.""Veeam One is a centralized management and centralized reporting tool. The tool has supportive infrastructure to create specialised applications and some server application. You can add all the resources and infrastructure. You will get the reports, can easily manage and monitor any feature.""The best feature of Veeam ONE to me is the infrastructure analysis that you can perform before deploying a backup environment. You can put in your backup requirements, for example, repository files and improvements on your VMware side, to ensure that it runs optimally. Pricing for Veeam ONE is also cheaper than VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) which is a direct competitor in the ops space, so this is another advantage of the solution.""I don't have to go back and forth between different applications to get the report I need."

More Veeam ONE Pros →

"There is the simplicity of management, accessibility, and availability.""Basic hypervisor functions with HA.""Having a virtualized infrastructure and being able to bring up Windows, Linux, and VMware within a virtualized environment brings more technology into the classroom. Without it, we couldn't do what we do.""Since it is riding inside of a multi-hardware environment, downtime is virtually nothing.""The solution is very scalable.""The most valuable features of VMware vSphere are backup and recovery.""We primarily use vRealize to troubleshoot any issues that may arise with our virtual machines, which is the main reason why we believe this solution is excellent.""With the current compliance options that I have to go through, it's very nice to have a lot of the encryption built in. It checks a lot of boxes for the federal level so I don't have to either bolt something on or have something on top of it. Having it native and integrated into the system makes things much easier."

Cons
"Turbonomic doesn't do storage placement how I would prefer. We use multiple shared storage volumes on VMware, so I don't have one big disk. I have lots of disks that I can place VMs on, and that consumes IOPS from the disk subsystem. We were getting recommendations to provision a new volume.""They could add a few more reports. They could also be a bit more granular. While they have reports, sometimes it is hard to figure out what you are looking for just by looking at the date.""We don't use Turbonomic for FinOps and part of the reason is its cost reporting. The reporting could be much more robust and, if that were the case, I could pitch it for FinOps.""The planning and costing areas could be a little bit more detailed. When you have more than 2,000 machines, the reports don't work properly. They need to fix it so that the reports work when you use that many virtual machines.""I like the detail I get in the old user interface and will miss some of that in the new interface when we perform our planned upgrade soon.""Turbonomic can modernize the look and feel, making it more user-friendly to access and obtain information.""While the product is fairly intuitive and easy to use once you learn it, it can be quite daunting until you have undergone a bit of training.""The one point is the reporting. We do have reports out of it, but they're not the level of graphical detail I would like."

More IBM Turbonomic Cons →

"It would be better if the solution presented the number of servers and the success rate on the dashboard.""The threshold could be easier to configure.""Not highly customizable.""They need to support more platforms.""Veeam ONE could improve by having capacity planning, intelligent automatization, and ransomware.""I am highly dissatisfied with their customer support approach.""The solution could improve the performance. We are not able to check the status of any system. Additionally, if there was an option to monitor server clusters it would be helpful.""The solution is not very good at backing up the physical Linux systems."

More Veeam ONE Cons →

"Technical support is not that great. It is too slow.""The setup is easy. However, the configuration expansion can be difficult. The full implementation took three to four days. This included the move from physical servers to virtual ones.""The solution could improve by having more integration.""On Vista, there should be a lot more new features. We would like to see more security features to harden our environment in the future.""It would be highly beneficial for VMware to collaborate with local hosts and partners in countries like those in Africa to establish specific pricing that would align with the economic conditions of countries in Africa, ensuring suitability and compatibility with our consumption capabilities.""It would be great if the free version included a management tool that was a scaled-down vCenter Manager.""The Web Client is too slow.""They can lower the price of its license."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
  • "Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
  • "What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
  • "Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
  • "You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
  • "Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
  • "If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
  • "It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."
  • More IBM Turbonomic Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "For what it does, the price is acceptable."
  • "If you have Veeam Backup and Replication with the essential license then this solution is free. If you were to purchase Veeam ONE by itself it is priced cheaper than competitors."
  • "The licenses are code-based or server-based for Veeam ONE. The last version is 12, and it is host-based, I don't like to move to a code-based solution."
  • "Veeam has been raising its prices in the last two years, so it's now lacking some competitiveness in pricing."
  • "I have not used the resale license in our testing environments. Sometimes, our customers used the trial license for 30 days and so on."
  • "I don't pay for the solution, so I can't comment on the cost."
  • "The cost is based on the number of core servers."
  • "Our licensing cost is $200 a year."
  • More Veeam ONE Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "My advice when it comes to pricing is that pricing is a bummer, especially when it comes to SnS coverage."
  • "Purchase only the cheaper solution with support. I don’t recommend high-end licenses."
  • "Pricing needs to be competitive since Microsoft Hyper-V has come a long way; they are both around the same price range."
  • "VMware is consistently expensive and their pricing arrogance is what will drive us and other customers away."
  • "Start with the lowest and upgrade if, and only if, absolutely necessary."
  • "Compared with other vendors’ products, the pricing of the license is slightly lower. The annual S&S price is very affordable."
  • "The product is worth what you pay for it. I definitely feel like I"m getting good value."
  • "The only issue with vSphere might be with the cost of the tools and the software."

    Reviews from Real Users

VMware vSphere stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. A few major ones are its virtualization abilities, its flexibility and availability, and its user-friendly interface.

Felix D., an Automation project administrator, DCS, I&E at Centennial Cayman Corp, writes, “The connectivity is fantastic, and many functions can run together in one server. If you need to scale, we can continue to add components or modules. It's a beautiful virtual solution that has many advantages over physical hardware, where you have to use devices and wiring to connect all your projects.”
