HP Adds Gen 5 Fibre Channel Infrastructure to All-Flash Arrays

HP recently made Gen 5 16 Gb/s FC targets available on new 3PAR StoreServ storage systems and as an upgrade to existing systems. The addition of Gen 5 16 Gb/s Fibre Channel (16GFC) infrastructure to Flash Storage—also equipped with Gen 5 16 Gb/s FC targets—is the latest addition to high performance flash storage.

Demartek evaluated the performance of the All-Flash HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Storage system with Gen 5 16 Gb/s FC SAN and compared it to 8 Gb/s FC, measuring the difference in performance.

Key Findings:

By replacing the 8 Gb/s FC components with 16 Gb/s FC on the HP 3PAR StoreServ array, FC switch, storage I/O bandwidth and IOPs increased by 35% without making any application-level changes. Latency improved remaining significantly and consistently under a millisecond.

Hi Avigail - I have a blog post that talks about 16Gb/s Fibre Channel with HP 3PAR. Readers can find it here: http://hpstorage.me/1GDkNxY. I also hope to have a video soon with Dennis Martin from Demartek talking about the latest testing that he did. Stay tuned for that.
