The total ranking of a product, represented by the bar length, is based on a weighted aggregate score. The score is calculated as follows: The product with the highest count in each area gets the highest available score. (20 points for Reviews; 16 points for Views, Comparisons, and Followers.) Every other product gets assigned points based on its total in proportion to the #1 product in that area. For example, if a product has 80% of the number of reviews compared to the product with the most reviews then the product's score for reviews would be 20% (weighting factor) * 80% = 16. For Average Rating, the maximum score is 32 points awarded linearly based on our rating scale of 1-10. If a product has fewer than ten reviews, the point contribution for Average Rating is reduced (one-third reduction in points for products with 5-9 reviews; two-thirds reduction for products with fewer than five reviews). Reviews that are more than 24 months old, as well as those written by resellers, are completely excluded from the ranking algorithm.

What do you think of AWS Storage Gateway?

Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced the beta of their new storage gateway functionality that enables access of Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Services) from your different applications using an appliance installed in your data center site. With this beta launch, Amazon joins other startup vendors who are providing standalone gateway appliance products (e.g. Nasuni etc) along with those who have disappeared from the market (e.g. Cirtas). In addition to gateway vendors, there are also those with cloud access added to their software tools such as (e.g. Jungle Disk that access both Rack space and Amazon S3 along with Commvault Simpana Cloud connector among others). There are also vendors that have joined cloud access gateways as part of their storage systems such as TwinStrata among...

What is most valuable?

Being able to effectively keep the live data on-premise, or the most recent data on-premise. But I make an affordable solution, where if data is out of a certain time, it goes and leverages all the cheap storage, whether that'll be the... more»

How has it helped my organization?

It's been able to keep us lean and mean on the storage front. I don't want to be buying many racks of storage just to put in my datacenter, when it's not really providing lots of value. I want to have all the imported data with me, thus being... more»

What needs improvement?

There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good. It is still shipping at the moment and it's quite a bigger plane. So, if you are going to go down the physical... more»

What is most valuable?

It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it. We were able to get rid of a single courier who was actually taking separate tapes with that... more»

How has it helped my organization?

Simplicity and that it removed a lot of moving parts in our environment. Like I said, we were able to reduce a courier, simplify the whole back up methodology, being able to get some of that data off to the cloud. Luckily, we haven't had to... more»

What needs improvement?

Free version. It actually does a lot. It ingests data from almost any source and it will push it out to almost any cloud. So it does everything I want it to do right now. They've done a good job with it, honestly. What could be helpful is... more»

What is most valuable?

The flexibility. Being able to virtualize it, port it wherever I like, test my backups, test my DR capabilities whenever I like without impacting anybody. We had some problems with physical devices in the past and the virtual appliances mean... more»

How has it helped my organization?

We have a whole bunch of DR and backup auditing requirements, and this simplifies that process and strips back all the operational overhead of managing tape. With that operational overhead of managing tapes gone, we're able to focus people's... more»

What needs improvement?

More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror. It's quite simple to use. We haven't had many issues.... more»

What is most valuable?

The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data. That's really handy because we're only using about 200 terabytes onsite, but we're getting two petabytes worth of deduped expanded data.

How has it helped my organization?

We were able to get away from tape for backups. Being able to backup directly to the disk and have it dump directly to the cloud means we're not 24 hours offsite, or 24 hour behind the times, where literally seconds is as fast as it can... more»

What needs improvement?

I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have. You can set up different shares, but I would like to be able set up retention windows... more»

What is most valuable?

Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us. What we do, we do that from our primary location and our disaster recovery location, so it works fine in our... more»

How has it helped my organization?

There's multiple ways, but the primary way that it helps us out is that it's seamless. Once we put it in play and configured it how we want, we don't have to go back and massage any configurations. Therefore, we haven't had any issues with it... more»

What needs improvement?

I would like to see voice activation as a new feature. If we could just tell the system what to do verbally, that would be perfect for us. I don't know how that can happen, but at this point I really can't see anything needs to be added it.... more»

What is most valuable?

Replacing an aging tape infrastructure by being able to backup to local cache as well as to the cloud.

How has it helped my organization?

* Able to reduce administrative burden on tape management. * Able to simplify and streamline our backup process.

What needs improvement?

More in depth reporting about the files in local cache: Where they are, how much there are, and what files it is moving to and from the cloud, as it needs to. Most of that's kind of behind the magic curtain process that we don't have a whole... more»

What is most valuable?

Once you set it up, we have a Symantec Backup. We set up all the policies around the call data, because it's very simple. Therefore, you don't need somebody to babysit it. It's just set it up and forget it; plug it in and let it go.

How has it helped my organization?

We used to have a tape backup. The tape backup has so many operations and orders. With AltaVault, everything is automatic. There is no one who needs to babysit and manage everything. It automatically does all these jobs.

What needs improvement?

We use it in the plants right now. We use NetBackup just as a cataloging service, so if NetApp would probably make it in one box (integrating it), then it would work better to marry to other catalogs. That's the one thing. Everything built... more»

What is most valuable?

* On-prem * Fast recovery * Moving away from tape and archiving to the cloud

How has it helped my organization?

We're still into the development, bringing it into production, but we had issues with performance so we're not fully in production yet. The jobs we have baseline into the AltaVault, it seems to be able to recover faster than the previous... more»

What needs improvement?

We would like * reliable monitoring * to be able to offload into glacier naturally, through policy * to unlock the file system restriction between the on-prem cache and the logical space.

What do you think of NetApp Cloud Backup?

Valuable Features We want to archive off-site, because it's cheaper. We are using end-to-end encryption because we're putting out content in the cloud, so that's really important to us. • Improvements to My Organization We are getting rid of our tape libraries, so this is an alternative to that. We don't have to have 100s and 1000s of tapes. We are going into the cloud, so this helps us go into the cloud. It also has better security for backup data. • Use of Solution I have doing a PoC on it, so we're not in production. We're testing it right now for approximately 30 days. • Stability Issues It's pretty stable. I've tested it. It seems to be pretty stable. • Scalability Issues We haven't tested it. • Customer Service and Technical Support We haven't used...

What do you think of NetApp Cloud Backup?

Improvements to My Organization We meet the requirement of having stuff that's backed to the cloud. It's eliminated tape-based backup systems. There is better security for backup data, because nobody can get it. It's encrypted, in the cloud, so you can't. The cloud puts it in some kind of encryption. • Valuable Features You can store backups for a while. • Stability Issues We did have some issues with the software and the firmware. We had to update it, but that was it. • Scalability Issues It's not been an issue right now. We just purchased a new one. • Customer Service and Technical Support We have used tech support. If you get the right person, it's good. We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are...

What do you think of NetApp Cloud Backup?

Valuable Features I don't actually use the solution. I plan the infrastructure so I couldn't comment on the actual use. That would require a support team to do that. • Improvements to My Organization It allows us more flexibility with our backups. • Room for Improvement Well, again, I don't know too much about what's coming up, so I couldn't really comment on that, either. • Stability Issues It's a strong, stable product. • Scalability Issues Highly scalable as well. We're very flexible in how we use the product. • Customer Service and Technical Support Again, I couldn't speak to that myself. It would have to be a technical person that would do that. • Previous Solutions We use NetApp as a partner and consulted with their SEs and their pre-sales team...

What do you think of StorSimple?

Valuable Features The deduplication technology is the most valuable feature. It saves time within a disaster recovery case. • Room for Improvement I hope that the virtual device in the cloud will get more functionality! • Use of Solution I have used this solution for five years. • Stability Issues The product is very stable. • Scalability Issues Due to the fact that it is combined with Microsoft Azure Storage, the scalability is very good. • Customer Service and Technical Support In case of a support issue, the level of technical support is very fast. • Initial Setup The setup has to be done by a Microsoft certified StorSimple Deployment Specialist. • Other Advice Please ask for advice before implementing this product. This can be done through a...

What do you think of AWS Storage Gateway?

Primary Use Case Backup, archiving, and disaster recovery. • Improvements to My Organization I’m not able to answer this question, due to the sensitivity of the use case. I use this product in support of a government contract. • Valuable Features It's an inexpensive, simple solution that is easily implemented for an existing backup environment. • Room for Improvement Although we have not used this application long, I am not sure, in its current configuration, that we could scale this solution to meet our needs. • Use of Solution Less than one year.
