The total ranking of a product, represented by the bar length, is based on a weighted aggregate score. The score is calculated as follows: The product with the highest count in each area gets the highest available score. (20 points for Reviews; 16 points for Views, Comparisons, and Followers.) Every other product gets assigned points based on its total in proportion to the #1 product in that area. For example, if a product has 80% of the number of reviews compared to the product with the most reviews then the product's score for reviews would be 20% (weighting factor) * 80% = 16. For Average Rating, the maximum score is 32 points awarded linearly based on our rating scale of 1-10. If a product has fewer than ten reviews, the point contribution for Average Rating is reduced (one-third reduction in points for products with 5-9 reviews; two-thirds reduction for products with fewer than five reviews). Reviews that are more than 24 months old, as well as those written by resellers, are completely excluded from the ranking algorithm.

What is most valuable?

Scalability is definitely one thing. The size of the database can grow without any issues. We've got one database table that's got over a billion rows in it; quite a bit of data, and it handles access like a champ. Nowadays, CA is doing a lot... more»

How has it helped my organization?

We've had it for so long, so it's status quo. But we've added all sorts of functionality to our applications and there are no issues with databases. Anything developers request, we're able to accomplish. Also, we deal a lot with government... more»

What needs improvement?

There are still some things - and I know they are working on some of them - but for the "no-outage maintainability" of things, they are making improvements as we speak, but there is definitely still room for more of that.

What is most valuable?

It's a stable platform. We've used it for many years as part of the legacy applications going back to early 80s. We get network database performance. We're able to scale it up. It's effective. We've been able to fine tune it over the years to... more»

How has it helped my organization?

We've had it in place for so long that it's actually part of the processes now. We have not built anything new in it, per se, over the last ten years. It supports our back office. The systems that CA IDMS supports includes back offices; so... more»

What needs improvement?

I don't have anything to add. I've heard about web services. We might be looking at a Java connection or web services in the future. It's serving our purpose right now. We're not looking for anything new. For what we do, it meets all our... more»

What is most valuable?

Over the years, with the different releases, and for sure the upgrades, the installation process has gotten a lot easier because they use Cora Software Manager now to to install it. And the upgrade process, they use the new active upgrade process. Those features make everything a lot easier, a whole lot simpler than it used to be in the past.

What needs improvement?

There are a lot of features that come out with each upgrade, but our application that runs on it has been around for a long time; they sort of decommissioned this application. So they don't really take advantage of a lot of the new features that come out with the Datacom upgrades and new releases.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the performance of the database. It's very good because it's a network database management system. It's very efficient at what it does and it's quite reliable as well. It provides us with a very stable platform.... more»

How has it helped my organization?

Thirty years ago we developed our main customer service system, a database management system, using IDMS and we're still running it to this day. We've migrated some tasks off it, but we're still running a lot of the business on it. We're... more»

What needs improvement?

We need to make it much easier to support and maintain, because the skills required are quite specialized and we're not going to have people in the future who've got the necessary experience and knowledge. So that's something that really... more»

What is most valuable?

It is a relatively easy to use key-value store. As a NoSQL solution, it has been around for quite a while, and thus been thoroughly tried and tested. It provides ACID transactions, which is not very common in the NoSQL universe. Response times are relatively fast. It runs as an embedded DB within your application, so a server is not necessary.

What needs improvement?

We have experienced two limitations: - Oracle BDB Java edition does not support bulk retrieval of entries via their keys. In situations where various entries need to be retrieved, individual calls by key need to be made, instead of just firing one request with all of the keys. There is the alternative of using a cursor, but the whole key set would need to be... more»

What is most valuable?

The stability and capacity of the database engine are the most valuable aspects for us. We have rather high CIC transaction rates with a couple thousand concurrent users at times, and DATACOM handles the data flow and availability, along with... more»

How has it helped my organization?

One of the things that I most appreciate is that functionality that is being added to the product. Things we are now able to accomplish without an outage, and were not able to do in prior releases, include data reorganization, file size... more»

How has it helped my organization?

It has been in the company for 30 years. It basically provides a stable platform for all the customer centric information to be stored and processed, in a reliable fashion.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see it made simpler to operate and maintain. I am a database administrator with many years of experience, but there are quite a few people who have not had the same experience. They would appreciate and benefit from a... more»

What is most valuable?

We use Datacom as the database for our CA 7 and CA 11. It is a very stable product. I really don't have to do much with it. I don't have to worry about the product going down. It just works most of the time. That is what I like about it.

How has it helped my organization?

It definitely cuts down on our support costs. I do not get woken up in the middle of the night very often for a problem with Datacom. So, it is a pretty solid solution.

What needs improvement?

This is a hard one. It has just been a really solid product. We have not had very many issues at all with it. The only minor issue that we have had with Datacom is in the installation guide: Some of the sizings for the databases have not... more»

What do you think of Oracle Berkeley DB?

Valuable Features Transactional data store Concurrent data store • Improvements to My Organization This product helped us to develop a performance-critical DB backend module in the healthcare domain. • Room for Improvement Environment corruption is a common problem found when a DB environment is used by more than one process on a machine at a time. Another thing is that an entire page will be locked when updating a record. This will cause locking of other records on the same page. This can be improved a bit more. • Use of Solution I used it for two years, about nine years ago. • Deployment Issues When multiple processes are holding handles to same environment, then there is a high possibility that the environment handles might get corrupted and the whole connection...

What do you think of CA DATACOM?

Primary Use Case We are using it as our database engine on our mainframe to store the data for various insurance systems. It performs very well. It continues to get easier and easier to use and to maintain. They keep adding more support, more 24/7 support. • Valuable Features It processes very efficiently. I think that's it's most important feature. I also love the support that I get when I call their support team. • Improvements to My Organization It just sits in the background. I don't know that it has a significant impact. • Room for Improvement I'm working with them to add some new features to the current release. Features like security auditing of access to the data, and continuing to update the security and the product. In general, they should just continue...

There have already been a lot of improvements since I last used the technology. However, I would be excited to see how the technology has developed into the area of blockchain. Also, technical support is something they should improve.

What do you think of CA DATACOM?

Primary Use Case We primarily use DATACOM as a database product. We use it for CA7 and CA11 on our mainframe systems, and as the database for CA7 and CA11. • Valuable Features The most valuable features, being a systems programmer, are the ease of use and stability. • Improvements to My Organization It has cut down on our support. Though I do not know about support costs, but it has cut down on my support hours, after hours especially.  It is a solid product. We do not often have issues with it. It just works most of the time. • Room for Improvement More zip processing is always a good thing. The more that they can move to zip engines that would be better. • Stability Issues It is like a black box type of product. We just set it up and it runs.  • Scalability...
