Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It's completely user-friendly.""I like that Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) has a straightforward setup and offers good technical support.""It's scalable.""It is an ETL tool, which does the extract, transform, and load.""The most valuable feature is Data movement.""ODI's most valuable features are it utilizes the database engine and is very lightweight.""All our systems can be widely integrated by ODI, such as transactional systems, our data warehouses, and B2B integration.""The most valuable features of ODI are the knowledge modules, such as the Loading Knowledge module and the Check Knowledge module, they are helpful. We can check for the constraints in ODI. That helps in figuring out what are the constraints that are the primary keys created in the tables. We can check them with the Check Knowledge module."

"It's very simple compared to other products out there.""It makes it pretty simple to do some fairly complicated things. Both I and some of our other BI developers have made stabs at using, for example, SQL Server Integration Services, and we found them a little bit frustrating compared to Data Integration. So, its ease of use is right up there.""One of the most valuable features is the ability to create many API integrations. I'm always working with advertising agents and using Facebook and Instagram to do campaigns. We use Pentaho to get the results from these campaigns and to create dashboards to analyze the results.""I can use Python, which is open-source, and I can run other scripts, including Linux scripts. It's user-friendly for running any object-based language. That's a very important feature because we live in a world of open-source.""The graphical nature of the development interface is most useful because we've got people with quite mixed skills in the team. We've got some very junior, apprentice-level people, and we've got support analysts who don't have an IT background. It allows us to have quite complicated data flows and embed logic in them. Rather than having to troll through lines and lines of code and try and work out what it's doing, you get a visual representation, which makes it quite easy for people with mixed skills to support and maintain the product. That's one side of it.""Sometimes, it took a whole team about two weeks to get all the data to prepare and present it. After the optimization of the data, it took about one to two hours to do the whole process. Therefore, it has helped a lot when you talk about money, because it doesn't take a whole team to do it, just one person to do one project at a time and run it when you want to run it. So, it has helped a lot on that side.""We're using the PDI and the repository function, and they give us the ability to easily generate reporting and output, and to access data. We also like the ability to schedule.""It has improved our data integration capabilities."

"Data transformations and rollups are easy to accomplish.""WhereScape's deployment package is a fantastic feature. The application allows for selecting specific objects that you would like to deploy from one environment to another rather than deploying the entire database.""WhereScape is really helpful in terms of architecture data. Everything is one of automation. Two people can do thousands of tables in one day or two. It saves a lot of time.""Their support staff are very knowledgeable, courteous, and professional. I feel their support staff go above and beyond to assure their customers are satisfied.""I found the initial setup very easy.""WhereScape RED has improved our business's ability to generate needed reporting without requiring a large team of developers to manually code all of the necessary plumbing.""I like the data vault implementations.""It has a built-in automatic scheduling environment."

Cons
"It has been very good. Just recently, I've faced an issue, but I solved it somehow. While integrating with a file, I faced an issue where I wanted output files, and I had used the text field limited quotations, but at the end of the file, there was a line breakage for the last column. So, we just removed the text field because it was not working correctly for us.""The initial setup is a bit complex compared to other tools.""Reverse engineering is complicated and challenging to manage.""Overall the product is fine, but sometimes its reports unknown errors while we compile ETL scripts.""At present, when multiple steps are executed in parallel in the load plan and errors occur, the error handling mechanism does not function correctly.""The resource management aspect of the solution could be improved.""Stability could be improved because some operators have issues.""Technical Support could be better."

More Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) Cons →

"There is not a data quality or MDM solution in the Pentaho DI suite.""Since Hitachi took over, I don't feel that the documentation is as good within the solution. It used to have very good help built right in.""I could not connect to our Hadoop environment in an easy and flexible way, and it was important to scale our data warehouse.""If you're working with a larger data set, I'm not so sure it would be the best solution. The larger things got the slower it was.""I would like to see improvement when it comes to integrating structured data with text data or anything that is unstructured. Sometimes we get all kinds of different files that we need to integrate into the warehouse.""The testing and quality could really improve. Every time that there is a major release, we are very nervous about what is going to get broken. We have had a lot of experience with that, as even the latest one was broken. Some basic things get broken. That doesn't look good for Hitachi at all. If there is one place I would advise them to spend some money and do some effort, it is with the quality. It is not that hard to start putting in some unit tests so basic things don't get broken when they do a new release. That just looks horrible, especially for an organization like Hitachi.""The performance could be improved. If they could have analytics perform well on large volumes, that would be a big deal for our products.""Some of the scheduling features about Lumada drive me buggy. The one issue that always drives me up the wall is when Daylight Savings Time changes. It doesn't take that into account elegantly. Every time it changes, I have to do something. It's not a big deal, but it's annoying."

More Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics Cons →

"Technical support isn't the best.""No support for change data capture or delta detection - that must be custom coded .""Jobs cannot be deleted via the deployment package. When deploying from dev to QA or production, a job has to be retired. The job has to be manually removed from the target environment.""Customization could be better.""The ability to execute SSIS projects within WhereScape would be nice because we have a lot of packages that are too cumbersome to recreate.""The solution can be a little more user-friendly on enterprise-level where people use it.""Improve the object renaming ability (it works, but it could be more automated).""Project-based searching of data objects in the data warehouse browser needs to be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Being an ODI developer, I never had to pay for this product. I know that the pricing/licensing is not really low, but the product is really good."
  • "We found that the cost compared to other integration tools is a little high, but the solution works great."
  • "The solution is expensive because of the model they use. The cost is for the license and for support."
  • "ODI comes included when buying the cloud version of the Oracle database license."
  • "There is a standard license to use the solution but there are other costs in addition, such as hardware and operating system."
  • "Per user, it is $900 USD per year, though they will give some discount. However, even a 60% to 70% of discount for each won't help us much. On top of that, there is the perpetual license you must pay at the outset."
  • "I have yet to determine the exact figure for Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) pricing, but it has lower pricing than Informatica."
  • "The Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) pricing isn't expensive, but it's not cheap, so it's in the middle. I'd rate the pricing as three out of five."
  • More Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "There is a good open source option (Community Edition)."
  • "The price of the regular version is not reasonable and it should be lower."
  • "Sometimes we provide the licenses or the customer can procure their own licenses. Previously, we had an enterprise license. Currently, we are on a community license as this is adequate for our needs."
  • "It does seem a bit expensive compared to the serverless product offering. Tools, such as Server Integration Services, are "almost" free with a database engine. It is comparable to products like Alteryx, which is also very expensive."
  • "I think Lumada's price is fair compared to some of the others, like BusinessObjects, which is was the other thing that I used at my previous job. BusinessObject's price was more reasonable before SAP acquired it. They jacked the price up significantly. Oracle's OBIEE tool was also prohibitively expensive."
  • "When we first started with it, it was much cheaper. It has gone up drastically, especially since Hitachi bought out Pentaho."
  • "The cost of these types of solutions are expensive. So, we really appreciate what we get for our money. Though, we don't think of the solution as a top-of-the-line solution or anything like that."
  • "The pricing has been pretty good. I'm used to using everything open-source or freeware-based. I understand that organizations need to make sure that the solutions are secure, and that's basically where I hit a roadblock in my current organization. They needed to ensure that we had a license and we had a secure way of accessing it so that no outside parties could get access to our data, but in terms of pricing, considering how much other teams are spending on cloud solutions or even their existing solutions, its price point is pretty good. At this time, there are no additional costs. We just have the licensing fees."

  • "Factor in the price of specialized consulting who know this product. They're hard to find and expensive."
  • "ROI is at least 10 times."
  • "Speed to market of a warehouse solution at a relatively inexpensive price point."
  • "Our company purchased a corporate unlimited license."

    Overview

Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) is a data integration software solution that provides a unified infrastructure to streamline data and application integration projects. It uses a powerful design approach to data integration, which separates the declarative rules from the implementation details. The solution is based on a unique ELT (Extract Load Transform) architecture, eliminating the need for a standalone ETL server and proprietary engine.

    Oracle Data Integrator Features

ODI has many valuable key features. Some of the most useful ones include:

    • Automatic documentation generation
    • Visualization of data flows in the interfaces
    • Customization of generated code

    Oracle Data Integrator Benefits

There are many benefits to implementing ODI. Some of the biggest advantages the solution offers include:

    • Efficient architecture: Oracle Data Integrator has a simple architecture that utilizes the source and target servers to perform complex transformations, making it an efficient solution.
    • Supports all platforms: ODI gives you platform independence by supporting all platforms, hardware, and OSes with the same software.
    • Cost-effective: Oracle Data Integrator reduces costs associated with initial hardware and software acquisition, and also decreases maintenance costs because it eliminates the need for an ETL Server and an ETL engine.
    • Automatic detection of faulty data: By using ODI, faulty data is recycled before insertion in the target application, providing you with a data quality firewall.
    • Easy development and maintenance: With a low learning curve, Oracle Data Integrator increases developer productivity while facilitating ongoing maintenance.
    • Active integration: ODI includes all styles of data integration: data-based, event-based and service-based.

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) solution.

Brian D., Business Process and Strategy Specialist Advisor at NTTData, says, “The Knowledge Module (KM) is my favorite feature of ODI. This is where I learned how to use variables to make jobs dynamic. I took that knowledge and created a KM that would go into iTunes and pull the sales of eBooks. Making something that is reusable, like a KM, is important to not only reduce build time but also maintenance in the future.”

Ashok S., Applications Support Manager at a marketing services firm, mentions, "The most valuable features of ODI are the ease of development, you can have a template, and you can onboard transfer very quickly. There's a lot of knowledge modules available that we can use. If you want to connect, for example, a Sibyl, SQL, Oracle, or different products, we don't have to develop them from scratch. They are available, but if it's not, we can go into the marketplace and see if there's a connector there. Having the connector available reduces the amount of hard work needed. We only have to put the inputs and outputs. In some of the products, we use there is already integration available for ODI, which is helpful."
