We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I found the portfolio management valuable.""The usability is excellent.""The ability to look at the resource loading is most valuable.""SharePoint site integration""A single place for all our organisation's project records.""Technical support is very responsive - particularly on critical tickets.""The most valuable feature of the solution is that it is stable to use, especially since I work with Microsoft for an extended period.""I like the way you can build the schedule by the Don't Start Before or Don't Start After values. You can use it to build your schedule based on how you change your dates. This is how it actually builds the schedule."

"Has a powerful workflow engine that allows creation of workflow complexities and processes.""The data provided by PPM is trusted and is available almost immediately; without trusted data there is very less scope of any tool to be successful.""Scenario comparison is the feature most valuable to us and the reason why we decided to choose HPE PPM over other portfolio management products.""Micro Focus Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) has a very strong workflow engine.""It is very important that the platform gives us a single place where we can measure progress toward goals, as we have weekly meetings with the CTO. We present these consolidated overviews and dashboards to him so that he has an overview of all the projects and can see the status of all the problems that we have and we are working on.""There are so many different pieces of functionality, and we use almost every single piece from deployment to demand, project, resource, and time management.""Resource management: The resource management module is very complete and covers most of the time all needs of customers.""It's a very detailed tool. As far as an enterprise is concerned, it gives you the flexibility to manage everything: portfolios, projects, finances, proposals, resources, and time... It takes care of even the minor details that need to be captured. The project management functionality is configured really well within the tool. That stands out."

"SAP is gradually introducing more flexibility and customization options to the system, allowing users to adapt it to their specific needs.""The integration portion with SAP models is valuable."

Cons
"The reporting aspects can be improved, which is one of the reasons why I'm using Qlik Sense. In the older on-prem versions, reporting was lackluster, to say the least. Project Online has a better handle on that. However, we will still be using Qlik Sense. We're also looking at an add-on app from a company called OnePlan that adds some additional functionality where Microsoft is not as clean in its approach for things such as portfolio management and some of the trends analysis.""This is a good product but we have struggled with stability from time to time. The service has stopped intermittently and it has been difficult to find a reason why.""The product is difficult to use for complex projects.""Permission management needs improvement.""The solution's synchronization with Jira Projects should be improved.""The solution should be made more collaborative.""There need to be more tutorials available to users.""EPM 2010 UI seems a bit dated now that 2016 is available."

"Sometimes features in PPM don't work as expected, or our users request a new feature. Typically, our partner vendor can deploy those changes. But there have been a few instances when we had to raise it with Micro Focus because it's beyond the ability of our partner vendor. When we raise the issue with Micro Focus, it sometimes takes time because it needs support from other customers using PPM, not just our bank. It goes through a voting system. Other customers need to vote for the feature. The features that get the most votes will possibly be added.""Reporting; need to be able to provide fancy reporting out of PPM, way it is done in OBIEE etc.""We constantly put in requests for some of the things we need. One of those is being able to export just our standard request type to PDF.""The solution can sometimes be a little inflexible and a bit caustic.""User interface continues to be poor. The product does not have a similar view in the different modules, e.g., staffing vs financial management, it looks like you are working with a different product and it is not easy to use or intuitive.""There are some limitations when it comes to attaching receipts. For example, if we are going to buy some non-labor-related assets such as hardware, we are not able to attach the receipts in the Financial Management module in version 9.41.""Micro Focus PPM should be less dependent on coding. It could also benefit from some updates to the software architecture. These have been on the roadmap for years now, but they haven't been released.""We had a couple of issues with stability or performance degradation about a year ago, around the time of the initial rollout. Since then, we've only had two unexpected outages that were quickly resolved."

"The system is old, so there are several issues that arise when we fetch data from integrated systems. Sometimes the data gets stuck, and there are instances where we need to access multiple pieces of information simultaneously.""It would be valuable if SAP integrated seamlessly with some products like Jira and Bitbucket."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I think they need more flexibility with licensing, because there are preconceived ideas that don't allow as much flexibility with the various licenses."
  • "The licensing was procured before my involvement."
  • "It has features that cannot be bought by other rivals, so cost does not matter."
  • "It is on the expensive side."
  • "There is a licensing cost."
  • "There is an annual license required for this solution."
  • "I cannot comment on the price as I was not responsible for purchasing the solution."
  • "I'm not quite sure about the licensing costs. We're probably paying somewhere in the neighborhood of about 80,000 to 90,000 a year for our current on-prem because we handle our own licensing. As far as Project Online is concerned, we're still trying to get a good handle on that. It looks like it is going to be in a neighborhood of about 120,000 to 150,000 a year, but we're getting a lot more capability out of it."

  • "Support and license management are two hurdles for us. Every time we purchase new licenses, it has taken us half a year to implement those."
  • "It is SaaS without a base fee."
  • "HPE PPM SaaS model is comprehensive, however, the base fee component has customer resistance to its recurring setup,"
  • "Now, we also received an increase in the support license prices, without any advanced notice. At this point, switching to unify all our licensing under HPE and customer support has been poor."
  • "We have an annual license, and it is fairly priced in comparison to that of other solutions."
  • "A large organization will find Micro Focus PPM affordable, but it may be a bit costly for a small or medium-sized company. The license is based on the number of users."
