We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We're using native monitoring capabilities for all our server hardware, for visibility for applications, for URLs, for webpage response and accuracy, and for monitoring network throughput in a lot of particular instances. We're using lightweight protocols for pinging, for DNS, for LDAP.""It works irrespective of the operating system we’re running.""It provides common administration, and a Single Sign-On Platform with RBAC, which eases the cross launch between multiple tools""The tailoring of the knowledge modules has been particularly useful as I can streamline the agents to only report on critical events.""It is breadth. It covers so many different technologies which can roll up into a single console.""Its event management capabilities are very open and flexible. I haven't seen a use case scenario with a customer that we couldn't actually solve the problem for, so it's really good. There are some interesting things that happen in an enterprise network (things that people don't normally expect), and the event management product is very flexible. You can solve problems as far as your imagination can go with it.""The noise reduction for ticketing works much better than we have seen in a lot of other companies.""Helix Innovation Studio is a very good feature. It allows us to develop our own enterprise applications and make them available for the customers."

"Incident management is streamlined with Moogsoft. One standout feature is its unique situation-creation capability, differentiating it from other fault management tools. While other tools typically convert alarms directly into tickets or incidents, Moogsoft adds a middle layer where multiple alarms can be aggregated into one incident. Moogsoft's strong AI capabilities also allow it to correlate similar alarms automatically based on past experiences.""I like the prediction features.""The AI component allows you to check previous cases and diagnose problems easily.""There are AI features in Moogsoft. Moogsoft has one wonderful feature that allows you to convert multiple alarms into situations. Generally, all other MoM tools get the alarms, and then convert it into an incident directly. There is one extra layer they have added before converting any alarm into an incident. Suppose there are multiple alarms that are somehow all related to a single source of issue. It converts all the alarms into a single situation, which then gets converted into an incident.""Moogsoft is easily deployable and ready to use.""The solution is extremely helpful with correlating IP failures and it has a very good sort of flow chart of IP systems. For example, if you see a failure in system A, you can track it down to the system causing the issue. This is a very handy feature.""The product currently seems to be a few steps ahead of the competition.""The Event Management feature is quite valuable."

"We have found that Zabbix is more easy to use than other applications.""It's a very reliable platform and we've never had any issues regarding the scalability or the stability of Zabbix.""Zabbix is both stable and scalable.""I have found that the reporting feature in Zabbix is most valuable. Additionally, the solution has given us bandwidth options, we are able to see where problems are. For example, we noticed a problem that occurred because of a bad interface going in the wireless VLAN.""The most valuable feature is the support for monitoring Cisco switches.""The solution allows you to configure and customize how you want to collect information from servers or other systems.""We like the user-interface for this solution, which makes it an easy to use tool.""The pricing of the product is reasonable."

Cons
"The graphs are extremely limited. We don't have a lot of dashboard options. To make reports and dashboards more useful, we usually need to integrate some dashboard solutions.""More modules for less popular applications and better documentation.""Application performance management (APM) is an area with certain shortcomings in the solution that needs improvement. I""The sizing (which is difficult), the maintenance of it and the upgrade paths. This is a difficult area which is not easy to cover, as every client has a different approach of implementing the product.""In a large company of our size, we need multiple people in our company trained. So, I have to take the training classes. Then, I have to go and train the rest of my organization. I would prefer to say to the other people on my team, "Go to this link and..." Or, "Here's a list of training sessions that you can go to which are online and that are free." I think it would help the adoption of their product in the marketplace, personally.""The solution is overly complex.""The solution could improve its price.""We have a unique use case because BMC typically sells this solution into enterprises that are deploying it within their IT, versus to a managed services provider like us where we're supporting thousands of customers. Multi-tenancy and the scalability have been challenges along the way, as we've grown... If anything could have gone better as we were ramping this up and adding a lot of volume to it, I would say it's the scalability. That would be one thing that could be improved."

More BMC TrueSight Operations Management Cons →

"They are very much dependent on open-source technologies like RabbitMQ message bus. They are using open-source databases, Apache Tomcat, NGINX. If we face any issues with Apache Tomcat or the RabbitMQ message bus, then we do not get support from them. We have to troubleshoot it ourselves.""The documentation and flexibility for generic integration could be improved.""It is taking a long time to set it up and could do more to roll out quickly.""They should consider including Chatbot.""I would like to see more integrations. It is rather difficult to install the enterprise systems with the agents.""I would like to see how Moogsoft integrates with the multi-cloud and brings out a single pane of glass, to see everything on one screen.""Moogsoft is dependent on external products to do orchestration and SOP-based functionality.""The tool needs to improve its support. It appears that the support responsiveness from Moogsoft is not aligned with the severity of the incident. Instead of proactively addressing issues, customers have to chase Moogsoft for resolution. In Moogsoft, unlike other tools like Splunk, the process follows a step-by-step sequence. You need to start each process in a specific order, typically following a sequence."

More Moogsoft Cons →

"Look and feel.""The only improvement I would suggest, revolves around its AI and ML capabilities.""In an upcoming release, there should be automated reports which we are currently doing manually. For example, if we collect a report file every day and want to send it to a moderator for review. We are expecting this feature to come out soon but it would be valuable to have now.""There are a lot of areas for improvement, specifically in the dashboards and reports functionalities.""We had some scalability issues with a large number of nodes.""If you want to use all of the features then you have to pay a licensing fee.""I would like to better be able to monitor Oracle processes.""There are some features of Zabbix that are not good for reporting. The DX Spectrum solution has better reporting."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Use conservative figures. In terms of hardware, monitored servers and also effort. The product is not cheap. But as with other products, you get what you pay for."
  • "The solutions are not the cheapest but are robust and stable. License model is rather complex and BMC do often change the model."
  • "Pricing is very high."
  • "We pay license fees of between $150 and $200 per asset. There is an enterprise software license fee, and then you pay a percentage for your maintenance, and then Premier Support. For example, if you buy a two-year license for the product, then the maintenance fee is added to that for two years at X percent a year. Then there's a small fee on top of that for Premier Support..."
  • "Pricing is all volume-driven. I think we were paying between $80 and $85 per license. That's per unit, for a perpetual license. You pay it one time and then, every year, you pay 20 percent of that for annual maintenance and support. But now that we've grown, we've purchased tens of thousands of licenses and the cost per license has gone down to something like less than $30..."
  • "It is a large, complex product. So, there is a commitment of manpower to deploy it, as it is not a cheap product."
  • "There is a big upfront cost when you buy the license, then there is annual maintenance. We look at, if I bought a license and paid for maintenance for five years, then average it out, what would be my monthly cost. We have had some of the competing tools come in around four dollars. This is coming in as a premium, which is why I don't have it deployed as I would like it. Therefore, we're in negotiations right now. If I can get it down to the four dollar range, I will triple my deployment in a year and a half."
  • "The only possible additional cost that I can mention, that you might not be aware of, is that it uses Oracle partitioning, if you use Oracle. There are Oracle partitioning fees that go with that."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by BMC TrueSight Operations Management users.

Mudassir A., Sr. Technical Consultant at a tech services company, says, "The event management part of TrueSight Operations Management, in my experience, is probably the best in the market. You have endless flexibility. You can build your own rules, you have the MRL language, and you can implement any kind of logic on the alerts. It may be correlation, abstraction, or executing something as a result of the alerts. You have almost the whole range of options available for event management using the available customization."

A General Manager - Sales at a tech services company explains, “There are many features that are most valuable in BMC TrueSight Operations Management. First, its proactive monitoring feature is highly developed. BMC TrueSight Operations Management is an intelligent tool that's able to understand day-to-day operations and consistently gives alerts. The alerts are not automatic for some activities, e.g. some alerts are given monthly, while some are given more frequently. The consolidated dashboard where you can enjoy a single pane of glass to look at the full infrastructure from the servers to the VMs, to the clouds, to the application, to the database, to the network devices, including having a topology, and having a tendency map of the topology of key offerings, is also a valuable feature of this solution.”

An Information Systems Computer System Controller at an insurance company states, “The business event manager tool that consolidates detailed information from a single instance of equipment is the most valuable thing for me. It provides support for the business tools and the IT services which come from several systems.”

Moogsoft is an AI-based solution that ensures continuous availability and prevents downtime by utilizing machine learning and advanced correlation on your organization’s stack. Moogsoft detects incidents before they can escalate, notifies the proper response teams, and applies machine learning in order to understand patterns to help prevent similar issues in the future.

Moogsoft sits on top of an organization’s production stack and extends across automation, service management, log indexing, and notification tools. Algorithmic Noise Reduction automatically reduces event volumes to unique alerts without relying on rules, filters, or models. This enables teams to analyze all monitoring ecosystem events with no noise and no blind spots.

With Moogsoft extensive integration options, users can aggregate all their observable data into a single location and create automated workflows to detect and remediate incidents in third-party systems, ensuring their system remains unharmed. Moogsoft’s anomaly detection tools detect incidents as they emerge, allowing security teams to respond swiftly before they impact customers.

Teams can easily set up their own integrations using Moogsoft’s REST API and webhook. The solution provides guidance for each step, allowing users to import data from whatever tool they need with just a few mouse clicks.

Some of Moogsoft’s top features and benefits include:

    • Alert noise reduction: By automatically applying statistical calculations and noise-reduction technologies to its alert data, Moogsoft eliminates unnecessary noise. This makes it easier to spot anomalies and alert only for important warnings.

    • Correlation: The Moogsoft correlation methods analyze alerts to identify common ground across incidents and events. With Moogsoft’s sophisticated visualization tools, users can view patterns by location, source, or service.

    • Anomaly detection: Moogsoft is designed to automatically reduce data, helping make anomalies more visible to security teams. Together with Moogsoft’s correlation abilities, it is simple to detect the probable root cause of issues that arise.

    • Custom integrations: Integrating with Moogsoft is seamless. Moogsoft’s REST API and webhooks allow developers to easily retrieve and update data and launch events. Integrations enable full visibility to ensure that apps and services are continuously running.

    • Collaboration: Moogsoft provides easy integration options with existing collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, or Slack, allowing team members to gain visibility into the big picture of any incident that arises. No matter what their defined role in the organization is, everyone on the DevOps team can immediately step in when needed.

    • Data enrichment: Multidomain enrichment data added as context with ingested alerts provide teams with important information on incidents, such as location, department, business relationships, and escalation processes. All data is imported from configuration database management systems, asset management databases, and discovery systems.

    • User-friendly interface: Moogsoft’s intuitive interface provides users with full step-by-step support. This includes videos and tutorials for all user levels.
