We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ability to track a project's progress using Microsoft Project Server is the most valuable aspect. It depends, especially when managing multiple projects.""Microsoft Project Server is simple to use.""The most valuable feature of the Microsoft Project Server is the level of detail with which I can break down a task and check the dependencies.""This is a scalable solution. It is easy to set up and to add clusters to your environment.""The solution has easy integration with Excel.""The solution scales well.""Resource allocation is the most valuable feature of Microsoft Project Server.""The key things are managing interactions, resource allocation, resource-leveling (enterprise) and as a collaborative tool, because we use it across multiple projects at a time."

"Has a powerful workflow engine that allows creation of workflow complexities and processes.""I like the ease of customization from an admin perspective. I'm really excited about some of the things that are coming in version 10.0.3 as far as what admins are able to do.""I like the automated calculations, especially on the resource side. When project managers enter their resource requirements into their staffing profiles, they are automatically translated into labor forecast calculations. PPM automates a significant portion of the forecast calculations. Timesheets are also built-in. We automatically process time sheets and bill them accordingly.""The data provided by PPM is trusted and is available almost immediately; without trusted data there is very less scope of any tool to be successful.""Overall, they have a very strong workflow management capability. That's a very strong feature because then you can model any process easily. Whether it is a demand management process, a pipeline management process, or your project delivery methodology, it is much easier because of their workflow management capability.""Micro Focus Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) has a very strong workflow engine.""Resource management: The resource management module is very complete and covers most of the time all needs of customers.""There are so many different pieces of functionality, and we use almost every single piece from deployment to demand, project, resource, and time management."

"Support is top-notch whenever help is needed."

Cons
"We want to expand to the local level where we lack strong IT expertise, we are considering making it more user-friendly.""It should be more agile and more flexible when it comes to customization.""In terms of tech support, it took a long time for them to resolve a ticket.""Project Server could be improved by simplifying how tasks are assigned and reviewed on a daily basis.""EPM 2010 UI seems a bit dated now that 2016 is available.""The solution needs to be much more stable.""We think that calculations are not working correctly, and there is a need to enter data a couple of times in order to give the correct calculations.""Microsoft Project Server's user interface is pretty average, and sometimes it can have bugs."

More Microsoft Project Server Cons →

"There are some limitations when it comes to attaching receipts. For example, if we are going to buy some non-labor-related assets such as hardware, we are not able to attach the receipts in the Financial Management module in version 9.41.""We had a couple of issues with stability or performance degradation about a year ago, around the time of the initial rollout. Since then, we've only had two unexpected outages that were quickly resolved.""Reporting; need to be able to provide fancy reporting out of PPM, way it is done in OBIEE etc.""Sometimes features in PPM don't work as expected, or our users request a new feature. Typically, our partner vendor can deploy those changes. But there have been a few instances when we had to raise it with Micro Focus because it's beyond the ability of our partner vendor. When we raise the issue with Micro Focus, it sometimes takes time because it needs support from other customers using PPM, not just our bank. It goes through a voting system. Other customers need to vote for the feature. The features that get the most votes will possibly be added.""I would also like to see improvement in PPM's reporting and alerts. PPM has reporting capabilities, including HTML reports and portlets. But a majority of clients will build their own reporting platforms, or they will use external reporting platforms like Tableau and QlikView.""We constantly put in requests for some of the things we need. One of those is being able to export just our standard request type to PDF.""The solution can sometimes be a little inflexible and a bit caustic.""User interface continues to be poor. The product does not have a similar view in the different modules, e.g., staffing vs financial management, it looks like you are working with a different product and it is not easy to use or intuitive."

"We use the desktop version of RationalPlan, and It seems some desktop software has the ability to share a document as a web view. This would be a nice feature allowing us to share our plans with clients without needing additional software. This may be something that is offered in the RationalPlan cloud plan."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I think they need more flexibility with licensing, because there are preconceived ideas that don't allow as much flexibility with the various licenses."
  • "The licensing was procured before my involvement."
  • "It has features that cannot be bought by other rivals, so cost does not matter."
  • "It is on the expensive side."
  • "There is a licensing cost."
  • "There is an annual license required for this solution."
  • "I cannot comment on the price as I was not responsible for purchasing the solution."
  • "I'm not quite sure about the licensing costs. We're probably paying somewhere in the neighborhood of about 80,000 to 90,000 a year for our current on-prem because we handle our own licensing. As far as Project Online is concerned, we're still trying to get a good handle on that. It looks like it is going to be in a neighborhood of about 120,000 to 150,000 a year, but we're getting a lot more capability out of it."

  • "Support and license management are two hurdles for us. Every time we purchase new licenses, it has taken us half a year to implement those."
  • "It is SaaS without a base fee."
  • "HPE PPM SaaS model is comprehensive, however, the base fee component has customer resistance to its recurring setup,"
  • "Now, we also received an increase in the support license prices, without any advanced notice. At this point, switching to unify all our licensing under HPE and customer support has been poor."
  • "We have an annual license, and it is fairly priced in comparison to that of other solutions."
  • "A large organization will find Micro Focus PPM affordable, but it may be a bit costly for a small or medium-sized company. The license is based on the number of users."
