We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We've saved hundreds of hours. Most of the time those hours would have to be after hours as well, which are more valuable to me as that's my personal time.""With Turbonomic, we were able to reduce our ESX cluster size and save money on our maintenance and license renewals. It saved us around $75,000 per year but it's a one-time reduction in VMware licensing. We don't renew the support. The ongoing savings is probably $50,000 to $75,000 a year, but there was a one-time of $200,000 plus.""We have a system where our developers automate machine builds, and that is constantly running out of resources. Turbonomic helps us with that, so I don't have to keep buying hardware. The developers always say, "They don't have enough. They don't have enough. They don't have enough," when they just configured it improperly. Therefore, Turbonomic helps us identify configuration issues on their side so it doesn't cost me money on the other end to buy resources that I don't really need.""I have the ability to automate things similar to the Orchestrator stuff. I do have the ability to have it do some balancing, and if it sees some different performance metrics that I've set not being met, it'll actually move some of my virtual machines from, let's say, one host to another. It is sort of an automation tool that helps me. Basically, I specify the metric, and if I get a certain host or something being over-utilized, it'll automatically move the virtual machines around for me. It basically has to snap into my vCenter and then it can make adjustments and move my virtual machines around. It also has some very nice reporting tools built around virtual machines. It tells you how much storage, memory, or CPU is being used monthly, and then it gives you a very nice way to be able to send out billing structure to your end users who use servers within your environment.""The proactive monitoring of all our open enrollment applications has improved our organization. We have used it to size applications that we are moving to the cloud. Therefore, when we move them out there, we have them appropriately sized. We use it for reporting to current application owners, showing them where they are wasting money. There are easy things to find for an application, e.g., they decommissioned the server, but they never took care of the storage. Without a tool like this, that storage would just sit there forever, with us getting billed for it.""Before implementing Turbonomic, we had difficulty reaching a consensus about VM placement and sizing. Everybody's opinion was wrong, including mine. The application developers, implementers, and infrastructure team could never decide the appropriate size of a virtual machine. I always made the machines small, and they always made them too big. We were both probably wrong.""It became obvious to us that there was a lot more being offered in the product that we could leverage to ensure our VMware environment was running efficiently.""It has automated a lot of things. We have saved 30 to 35 percent in human resource time and cost, which is pretty substantial. We don't have a big workforce here, so we have to use all the automation we can get."

More IBM Turbonomic Pros →

"The most valuable feature is Optima, which is something that we use quite extensively.""With this platform, users could migrate to the cloud on the go and use public cloud services like Oracle database while integrating with their own local storage."

More RightScale Cloud Management Platform Pros →

"The most valuable feature is workflow automation.""vCenter Orchestrator is very reliable and stable.""Technical support is helpful.""The implementation phase for vCenter Orchestrator was easy.""The solution was easy to install.""The most crucial feature of vCenter is its scalability. We can use it to expand our network, so we don't have to report our client devices. The network configuration features are also helpful because we can migrate entire networks.""It's 100% stable, it's always stable. We haven't had any bugs. The solution works very well and we haven't had any problems.""The solution's most valuable feature is its good automation features."

Cons
"Turbonomic can modernize the look and feel, making it more user-friendly to access and obtain information.""It can be more agnostic in terms of the solutions that it provides. It can include some other cost-saving methods for the public cloud and SaaS applications as well.""The reporting needs to be improved. It's important for us to know and be able to look back on what happened and why certain decisions were made, and we want to use a custom report for this.""If they would educate their customers to understand the latest updates, that would help customers... Also, there are a lot of features that are not available in Turbonomic. For example, PaaS component optimization and automation are still in the development phase.""Enhanced executive reporting standard with the tool beyond the reports that can be created today. Something that can easily be used with upper management on a monthly or quarterly basis to show the impact to our environment.""I do not like Turbonomic's new licensing model. The previous model was pretty straightforward, whereas the new model incorporates what most of the vendors are doing now with cores and utilization. Our pricing under the new model will go up quite a bit. Before, it was pretty straightforward, easy to understand, and reasonable.""While the product is fairly intuitive and easy to use once you learn it, it can be quite daunting until you have undergone a bit of training.""Some features are only available via changes to the deployment YAML, and it would be better to have them in the UI."

More IBM Turbonomic Cons →

"Technical support is an area that can be improved.""There is a problem with integration due to invalid private node security certificates."

More RightScale Cloud Management Platform Cons →

"There can be compatibility issues.""When the SSO certificate needs to be renewed, the upgrading and testing are quite complicated.""The GUI should be enhanced in the future.""Storage has room for improvement. It's a big problem for our solution. The interface also needs improvement, it should be simplified.""vCenter Orchestrator's debugging capacity could be improved.""The scalability option provided by the solution is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required.""A feature to review and setup tasks should be added.""In the next release, to make it easier to write the workflows, I would l like to see more HTML GUIs."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
  • "Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
  • "What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
  • "Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
  • "You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
  • "Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
  • "If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
  • "It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."

  • "The price is higher than an open-source product, or CloudForms, or IBM Cloud Pak, but it is still not very high."
  • More RightScale Cloud Management Platform Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Our licensing is on a yearly basis. We pay for the license and then we pay the support every year."
  • "This solution is expensive and the licensing is more attractive for Haveri."
  • "The price is reasonable, and one of the reasons that this product was selected."
  • "We provide the VMware solution to our clients, for which they pay a perpetual license."
  • "The concept of hyper-convergence is smart. I don't know if it can be applied with less cost to be more affordable for small or medium-sized companies. The cost is a very important factor for it. We are currently depending on SAN storage. However, the hyper-converged solutions are depending on the storage within the hosts, such as vSAN in the VMware. It is a smart solution."
  • "We pay a yearly fee, based on our entries."
  • "The licensing module is somewhat complex. Calculating the cost is complicated. Many of our clients are unclear about the billing system and the traffic metering."
  • "The licensing cost is manageable because they have different versions available, standard, essential, and advanced."
