Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"ASP.NET is stable. I did not have to do any maintenance on it.""The solution is useful for seeing what old technology was before the new technology we use today, such as .NET.""ASP.NET works well with Windows applications and more generally, the Windows platform.""I have found the entity framework to be a valuable feature. The authentication layer is amazing as well. ASP.NET has a vibrant community, and as a result, we haven't had the need to contact technical support.""The most valuable features are ease of use, scalability, and flexibility.""I would say that we have seen a return on investment when it comes to this solution.""The most valuable feature of ASP.NET is its visual side, which makes building Windows forms applications visually efficient.""While using ASP.net, we can create interactive websites."

More ASP.NET Pros →

"We can write programming code, write our test cases and automate tests in Visual Studio.NET.""It is a stable solution.""The most valuable features of Microsoft Visual Studio are the database connections.""One of the most valuable features is its support. It's easy for me to get support even though I never use it. If there's a bug or a performance issue, Microsoft also provides quick updates, and this is another valuable feature of the program.""While you're coding, it's really nice to be able to print stuff out and make sure that all the data is being organized the way you want it to be.""The system can efficiently manage the databases.""The initial setup was very easy.""This solution can integrate with almost any functionality offered by Microsoft."

More Microsoft Visual Studio Pros →

"The new version doesn't have the option to view data, but it has other, better features though.""The initial setup is very straightforward.""The support on offer is helpful.""When you have a group project and you want to share your document with your group members, the solution is very useful.""It saved me big time once! My car got broken into and they took my laptop with all my files. But I didn't have to worry because everything was backed up on SharePoint. It was a lifesaver!""SharePoint has very good features for collaboration.""We appreciate the fact that this solution can provide us with an on-premises version, as due to our geographical location, we are not able to use cloud-based tools.""What I like most about this solution, is that we can use it as a secondary customization platform."

Cons
"I'd like to be able to run any application from a specific point instead of compiling all the code. For example, if I want to test function A, I should be able to test it even if my other functions aren't working. Like in SQL, you provide parameters to the function, and it executes. I'd like to see something similar in ASP.NET.""The con is that every year they are launching a new technology, and for a company like us, we get confused which version should be used.""It would be beneficial if Microsoft provided more support for certain technologies, such as Blazor, in the form of basic components. As it stands, some reliance on third-party tools may be necessary. Having more support from Microsoft for these technologies would make it easier for users to build and maintain applications. For example, the grids, date pickers, and dropdown lists would be components to add.""I am sure there is something that has room for improvement but nothing specific comes to mind.""It should be open source or deployable to any operating system so that the dependency can be removed.""In addition to the visual aspect, there is a need for ASP.NET to provide a robust visual front end like there was in the past.""There used to be IAF, which you could spin on a Windows machine. However, that sort of setup does not exist for Linux machines. Because customers still prefer a Windows underlying infrastructure, it can get expensive.""Scripted languages like AngularJS and Node.js are much faster than using ASP on the client side."

More ASP.NET Cons →

"Every time it updates, there are issues.""Technical support can be slow to respond at times.""With the free version, we don't have that much support for Visual Studio. Its support is a little bit less and can be better.""I would like to see more tools in the next release.""Microsoft Visual Studio could improve by being compatible with more operating systems. However, we understand the solution is proprietary to Microsoft.""Microsoft Visual Studio can improve by bringing back designers. They used to have designers for architecture charts and diagrams. They were able to do things, such as database design. If they can bring them back, it would be great.""Additional components such as add-ons could be included in the installation packages.""Microsoft Visual Studio could improve by making it faster. Every time they add a new feature or plugin it slows it down. They should allow the user to turn off features they do not use."

More Microsoft Visual Studio Cons →

"The downside is the different versions of SharePoint which means we need to have different designers as not all versions are compatible.""SharePoint is too complex to install and maintain.""If you compare the workflow with other engines like Olympus and K2, it is very complicated to create a workflow.""The web services aspect of the solution is very weak.""Exporting the whole SharePoint website is an issue.""SharePoint Designer could be improved by being more user-friendly. I think that they have a new release, but the focus is on Power Automate, not Designer. Designer's interface is somewhat classical, but it should be more user-friendly.""SharePoint Designer's integration with Microsoft tools could be improved.""The pricing is a little bit high and can be reduced."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing is a bit high and I believe that it can be brought down."
  • "ASP.NET is an open-source solution."
  • "I think ASP.NET, in deployment, is something that's quite costly when you're on a cloud provider such as Azure, and you have to pay the server cost. On average, it can cost approximately $1,000 per month to host a good site with a few databases."
  • "The solution requires a licensing fee but is worth the investment."
  • "The solution is open source and free."
  • "ASP.NET is open-source and free of charge."
  • "This is a free solution. However, we have some server licensing costs which are not directly a cost of using the solution."
  • "On a scale from one to ten, with one being cost efficient and 10 being the most expensive, I would rate ASP.NET's pricing at six. There used to be IAF, which you could spin on a Windows machine. However, that sort of setup does not exist for Linux machines. Because customers still prefer a Windows underlying infrastructure, it can get expensive."
