We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The speed in which you can take a CMS and make it a full-blown shopping cart with analytics tracking, SEO, user accounts, security, and ease of use through a robust framework of modules and plugins to enhance and promote-related content is about as turnkey as it gets with Joomla.""One of the most robust, stable, secure, feature-rich CMSs on the market."

More Joomla Pros →

"Tech support tops off as excellent.""It has improve our organization by speeding up document sharing.""There is not just one valuable feature; it is all of them working together.""The most valuable feature is the ability to easily build intranet sites for communicating within teams, storing documentation, product information, pricing policies, updates on product infrastructure, and other related news.""For SharePoint, I believe the most valuable feature is the customization and allowing you to share and edit files and documents. Being able to share externally and the precise administration of the files in terms of giving permissions and controlling who has access to what is a very good feature.""Staff training is reduced because learning basic SharePoint is not as complicated as an EDRMS.""The ability to quickly and easily create team sites has been great.""For any organization with more than one person in it, if they are trying to organize things to let people in the company know what others are doing, then this solution is good for them."

"The platform’s most valuable feature is the ability to create web pages with ease."

Cons
"I would like to see the same sorting and attributes available through the web browser on the JED (sorting by free or commercial license, sort by rating, popularity, etc.) within the back-end Joomla Web Installer when browsing extensions.""I would like to see more back-end admin power pulled into the front-end, therefore the admins will not have to use the back-end as much, especially for the menu manager, user manager, etc. versus using third-party extensions to achieve this."

More Joomla Cons →

"The product must provide more automation.""Allow more functionalities for the on-premise version. Do not force the move of content to a non-private cloud.""More hints and make it more user-customizable.""Flexibility and extensibility, above everything, could be improved.""The areas of this solution that need improvement are the relationships between lists, cross-site web parts, and page-building tools.""Improve the user-friendliness.""It is too heavy. MS should not have paid foreign coders dollars per each row of code. They wasted the stability and reliability in the end.""I would like it to be more compliant with global regulations. There are certain features which could be included that currently are not there, such as compliance and record management capabilities."

"In a few scenarios, Sitecore DMS works slowly."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Joomla is open source, therefore free. Only hosting, the time to build it along with the training time is your startup cost."

  • "It is very expensive."
  • "The data classification and search elements are cheap."
  • "The replacement costs for it are cheaper if you use only SharePoint."

    Comparison Review

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
