Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature of Nagios XI is customization. We can customize based on our requirements. We can do modifications and implement a lot of scripts. Additionally, it is easy to use.""BPI: It allows defining peripherals to map business criticality for efficient monitoring, as required.""The dashboard allows you to see what's going on in the overall system.""Nagios XI helps us monitor the bandwidth of the internet connection, HTTP, DNS, active directory services, and exchange data availability. We have multiple servers to monitor databases, availability of servers, and ping.""The solution has a lot of plugins and scripts integrated with it.""The most valuable feature is the monitoring of processes.""I can monitor a phone on a desk to very big servers of any company.""Since this is an open source technology, if we are capable of writing the plugins in any scripting language, this product allows us to monitor anything we want."

More Nagios XI Pros →

"The solution is easy to use and easy to manage.""It was easy to integrate Spiceworks with our existing setup.""The solution can find all asset details automatically, whether it's a Mac address, computer name, IP address, models, etc. It's very helpful.""Tickets by e-mail, with actions by hastag.""Helpdesk and inventory are both equally valuable, and they form the true core of the product.""The nice thing about Spiceworks is always it's free. Monitoring of printers for low toner. Finding machines that have low memory or low hard disk space.""If you're in the market for a low-cost service desk system, Spiceworks is a good software solution to start out with, especially when it comes to startups and those organizations that don't currently have any existing service desk software in place.""The most valuable features are the inventory and personalization."

More Spiceworks Pros →

"The most valuable feature of WhatsUp Gold is NetFlow and the virtualized maps.""The interface in the last few years it has been a lot greater, they are much more user-friendly. I like the interface.""The user interface is good enough.""The most valuable feature is the monitoring of resources.""The threshold alerting is the most valuable feature.""WhatsUp Gold is very easy to deploy.""The interactive mapping interface for scrolling, zooming, and drilling down on an element to learn about a network issue is good. When we see a network there will sometimes be a spot that has one link. You can go into a particular part of the topology map, scroll in, and see exactly which module it is.""It is easy to access and discover devices, as well as monitor them automatically. The topology discover is also a useful feature."

More WhatsUp Gold Pros →

Cons
"They need more documentation for the plugins.""The reporting part should be made simpler. While we can obtain all the reports we need, we always have to create work-arounds to get them.""I would like to see support for notification via SMS.""It can be quite difficult to know which drivers and agents to use when setting up.""It is really difficult to integrate Nagios XI with another system to generate logs and alert our management of failures in security infrastructure.""The Configuration Wizard needs improvement, because not all vendors are present.""The technical support is variable - sometimes I get answers, but most of my tickets go unanswered.""Open-source software is usually not user-friendly."

More Nagios XI Cons →

"Since Spiceworks is a free tool, it's not very scriptable or customizable.""With Spiceworks, like, when I open the websites, I have to Zoom in. I need to zoom in on those websites sometimes because it makes it horrible to use.""It would be nice to have remote access to the solution via a tablet. They also need remote control from a PC. Right now, to complete the technical support process, you have to have a tool to access the PC, and check the problems.""The network mapping could be improved. Putting together an actual bonafide network map would be really nice.""One of the biggest ways in which Spiceworks could improve is by developing better and more automated workflows. For example, in another solution called ServiceDesk by ManageEngine, you can have levels of approval in the event that there is a request for new software, or when someone requests a VPN or WiFi connection. This kind of multi-stage approval feature provided by ServiceDesk does not appear to exist in Spiceworks, and it is one of their main shortcomings for me.""There are a lot of disadvantages to Spiceworks because it's not an agent-based solution.""The SNMP sniffer requires a lot of work to get right.""I would like the solution to allow for more direct interaction with computers. I can open tickets and I can see their status, but I can't interact directly with the computers themselves."

More Spiceworks Cons →

"I would like to see better integration with switches so that you can see what is connected to each port, what the traffic is, and have a network map automatically generated.""The interface needs some work.""Users want SMS available via Whatsapp Gold. They don't want to go through third party SMS servers. The solution should work to make this possible.""Regional product team support is not very good.""WhatsUp Gold should work on real-time monitoring and configuration management. If they succeed in doing this, the solution will cover all the network troubleshooting aspects and will be a benefit.""Adding on services increases the cost and on the version we have there is no option for ATM monitoring.""One of the biggest things that made us start to look at another product is we're not able to have an end to end monitoring from a user perspective throughout the system and back to the user. All the monitoring is from inside out, we need something that also can give us from outside in.""Importing the maps and being able to customize them could be easier."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
