Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This product's unique protocol make it superior to competing products and alternate solutions.""The most valuable feature of this solution is deduplication.""The solution can scale.""The solution is quite scalable. An organization shouldn't have any problem expanding if they use this solution.""The most valuable feature of this solution is that it can support both the CIFS and NFS protocols simultaneously.""The tool's deployment was easy.""I like the tool set, it's easy to work on and the support is brilliant.""The solution is very easy to manage. That's its most valuable feature."

More DD Boost Pros →

"I think the most valuable feature is the catalyst technology, which is in the StoreOnce appliance.""HPE StoreOnce is an easy-to-use tool.""Catalyst backup is used to back up Oracle databases, and provides very good throughput during backups.""Technical support is quite good.""The most valuable feature of HPE StoreOnce is the virtual drive.""The product’s data retention is very good.""HPE StoreOnce is particularly useful in situations where organizations require a backup solution to store their data. Its deduplication feature is quite impressive, providing a deduplication ratio of around 25 to 26.""It is very easy to implement."

More HPE StoreOnce Pros →

"It's so easy to work with.""The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data.""The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications.""Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us.""The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support.""The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data. You're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud.""Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored.""It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it."

Cons
"The solution could always be cheaper.""This solution should cover more platforms, and there should be more product coverage.""The solution must provide better deduplication.""It should be expanded to include other databases and software. It should also be made easier to restore.""I'd like the be able to deploy the solution on SAN backups.""My customer was interested in ransomware protection. Currently, Dell offers the Cyber Vault solution, which is separate from Data Domain. Ideally, ransomware protection would be integrated directly within DD Boost, without requiring an additional out-of-the-box solution. This feature is currently available with HPE's Zerto and Huawei's Ocean Protect with third-party products like PradoNet. While Cyber Vault exists as a separate solution from Data Domain, having some standard protection for immutable backups into DD Boost would be a valuable addition and make it more competitive with other vendors.""Connectivity with the cloud and on-premises needs improved gateways.""The solution doesn't scale. If you hit your capacity, you need to buy a new device."

More DD Boost Cons →

"The solution could always be less expensive.""I would like to see better integration with Veeam software.""HPE StoreOnce Backup to Disk (BTD) is not a good backup solution for NAS devices. It does not have a dual controller, so if one controller fails, the entire system will go down.""It is difficult to solve issues with this solution remotely. I prefer to use the knowledge base platforms. The response time could improve.""improvement? HPE StoreOnce has a limitation with respect to controllers. Other tools offer more than one controller. I feel that the high availability of the view controller should be redundant. The tool’s control and UI part should be improved and made more advanced. The feature that helps with the manual movement of tapes should also be improved.""The web interface, ease of use, and GUI all need to be improved.""The repository should have an extension to connect to the cloud and deposit the backups.""The user interface of HPE StoreOnce is an area of concern where improvements are required."

More HPE StoreOnce Cons →

"It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution.""It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture.""More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out.""What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have.""There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good.""The solution needs faster indexing.""I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have.""I would like to see more web support."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We scale this product by adding licenses, which are related to capacity."
  • "The cost is monthly."
  • "The hardware platform is cost intense, so for small and mid-range, this product is not the best choice."
  • "The pricing is high compared to the competition and should be reconsidered."
  • "The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server."
  • "The solution comes with a capacity license and it is a one-time purchase. There are additional costs, such as support."
  • "Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is an expensive product. There are extra costs for support because every year, you have to renew your SLA for support, and the cost is always increasing."
  • "My company must pay approximately 10,000 USD annually, making it an expensive product."
  • More DD Boost Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The price puts me off. It's definitely on the high side."
  • "To be honest, we were quite happy with the price, but we always want things cheaper than they are. I think for what we got, we felt that the price was quite reasonable comparing it to other products that provide that same level of functionality."
  • "There are costs for additional storage and space."
  • "Price-wise, it comes with a high price tag when compared to other products."
  • "The cost of HPE StoreOnce is very expensive."
  • "We have got a perpetual license, and we have access to all the features. If you are using cloud banks, you can store the internal data in HPE Cloud if needed. You can offload the data to the HPE Cloud. It is a licensed product. We have got around 10 TB of cloud bank storage with a one-time payment. We specifically took 10 TB for very critical offsite backups. We can also increase it in blocks if needed."
  • "The licensing schemes could improve in HPE StoreOnce and the price is high. They should reduce the price."
  • "I think the product is competitive in terms of pricing. Other products like the one from Dell are costlier compared to the tool."
  • More HPE StoreOnce Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It's quite cost-effective."
  • "The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
  • "It is a rather expensive program."
  • "You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
  • "In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
  • "There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."

    Overview

DD Boost software delivers an advanced level of integration with backup applications and data base utilities, enhancing performance and ease of use. Dell also provides a DD Boost File System Plug-In (BoostFS) with DD Boost for even greater application support, which enables all the benefits of DD Boost for applications that use NFS for data protection. Rather than sending all data to the system for deduplication processes, DD Boost enables the backup server or application client to send only unique data segments across the network to the system.

HP StoreOnce Backup is a data backup solution that provides a consistent, high-performance, scale-out architecture for your entire enterprise. Reduce the amount of backup data capacity by 95 percent, and choose between powerful dedicated appliances for data centers, or flexible virtual appliances for smaller and remote offices.

NetApp AltaVault is a cloud-integrated storage solution created to increase recovery capabilities and lower cost and risks. It is better than traditional backup and recovery solutions because they are considerably slower, more expensive, risky, and can be too complex for the comprehension of many users. NetApp AltaVault solves issues related to backup, archival, and restoration. Compared to on-premises solutions, this software claims to be up to 90% less expensive while solving multiple issues related to data storage in the cloud. AltaVault presents three solutions to its customers: backup and recovery, cold storage and archives, and disaster recovery.

    1. NetApp’s backup and recovery solution works with Kerne-Based Virtual Machine, Microsoft Hyper-V, and VMware vSphere, creating a solution for mid-sized businesses as well as for bigger companies that want to protect their offices in different locations. The usable local cache capacities of this solution range from 32TB to 383TB, providing clients with enough storage for their important data while giving them the option to retrieve it if something goes amiss.

      2. NetApp AltaVault can be configured in cold storage mode and used for data that is not often used. The solution is scalable, thus allowing minimal costs for operating with cold data and allowing fast access to it at the same time.

        3. AltaVault offers disaster recovery for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. Your data will be secured on the cloud, providing you with a secure backup if the need for disaster recovery arises.

          NetApp AltaVault Features

NetApp AltaVault’s many valued features include:

          • Data reduction: NetApp AltaVault applies deduplication and compression, reducing data up to a 30:1 ratio.

          • Network and cloud optimization: AltaVault can increase data transfer speed by up to 4 times due to its built-in WAN optimization.

          • Data restoration: Because data is restored from the local cache, recoverability is up to 32 times faster than other methods.

          • Deployment and scale: Users can choose their preferred method - virtual, physical, or cloud-based in Azure or AWS. Since NetApp AltaVault starts at 2TB and can scale up to 57PB, it is one of the most scalable products in its category.

          • Compatible with existing backup software: NetApp AltaVault is compatible with NetApp SnapMirror, EMC, IBM, Commvault, Veritas, and Veeam, meaning it offers a vast array of options for its users when it comes to backup software.

          • Cloud choice and agility: AltaVault supports NetApp StorageGRID, Azure, Google, IBM, and AWS. This provides users with the assurance that their data is safely stored, even if their cloud provider experiences technical issues.
