We performed a comparison between Citrix Hypervisor, Oracle VM VirtualBox, and Proxmox VE based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Proxmox, VMware, Microsoft and others in Server Virtualization Software."What I find most valuable in Citrix Hypervisor is its licensing policy, because you'll get it for free if you buy a Citrix XenDesktop license. You don't need to spend additional money on the Citrix Hypervisor because you can manage both the Citrix XenDesktop and the Citrix Hypervisor with just one license, so you can save on cost. I also like that the solution is good support-wise. Hardware support is also faster compared to other solutions."
"The ability to move a virtual machine while it is running is a big advantage."
"The onboarding process is pretty straightforward."
"What I like the most is the support of the GPU Graphics and the VM Live migration."
"We can easily migrate VMs from one host to another."
"The solution integrates well with other solutions, which makes it really strong as a primary solution to deploy."
"Scripting can automate procedures."
"We find there are good central maintenance and central management panels."
"This solution creates a snapshot of virtual machines so you can create test environments."
"The good thing is that it is multi-platform. Once you create a virtual machine in one particular environment, you can switch over to see if you can run it in other environments. For example, if you are on Windows and you create this virtual machine, you can actually go ahead and change the operating system. You can switch it over to Linux or Mac OS and see if you can run the VirtualBox on those particular machines. It even runs on some of the commercial operating systems that are not mainstream, such as Solaris and BSD. These kinds of operating systems are also supported by VirtualBox. The other thing that is good about VirtualBox is that it is open source. So, if you need to do any modifications for your own purposes, you can just download the source, modify it, and deploy it in your environment. It is pretty good and very versatile. You can create and manipulate virtual machines from the command line, which is also very important. It's something that some other products on the desktop side do not have. VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop don't have a good command-line interface to create and manipulate virtual machines, whereas VirtualBox has it out of the box, which is pretty good."
"I like that it is free and runs on Linux/Ubuntu - I wouldn't use any other solution. I am able to perform small developing tests."
"This solution can be used on many different platforms including Windows and Linux."
"The solution has high performance and is easy to use."
"The flexibility and the closed platform, so it allows you to run in multiple platforms, Windows, Linux, Macintosh."
"The versatility, simplicity, and stability of the product are it's most valuable features."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to copy bidirectionally between the desktop and the virtual machine."
"In addition to the virtualization, the firewall and the routing functions that it provides are valuable."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is migration."
"It is easier to balance loads across hypervisors if a given container or virtual machine uses more resources than its peers."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is performance."
"The most valuable feature of Proxmox VE is the linked clone."
"The ability to back up a host and keep it running is valuable."
"The initial setup was really straightforward and easy."
"The whole solution is good. It has good tools that help me in managing the servers. It is also stable."
"The main problem with Citrix Hypervisor is getting readily available backup solutions for it. It would be wonderful if Hypervisor were better integrated with third-party backup solutions."
"Assigning the order of virtual server startup is not very easy and this can be improved."
"The self-service user portal needs to be more granular and be more customizable."
"I am not very sure about how flexible Citrix Hypervisor is with different types of infrastructures. I only know it is flexible with Nutanix, but I am not sure if it is also flexible with others. They can make its integration with other platforms or OEMs easy. They should also make it easy for users to manage their infrastructure. Citrix should make compatibility information related to a hypervisor easily available in a datasheet. Citrix isn't really recognized in this part of the world, and they need to expand their solution and make it more available. There are a lot of customers and companies that are looking for a solution like Citrix, and it should be available in this part of the world. They need to educate people more. Technically, it is good and flexible and has good ability, but it is not as much known as VMware or Microsoft. Their support should also be improved. Currently, if you don't have an updated version, they will not give you the attention."
"It can be useful to have a web management program because we have to install our client-server. We have to properly manage the host, if we had administration tools through a web interface it would be a benefit."
"You need a licensed account to look up technical support."
"Citrix could provide more tools to help the client manage the solution because we need to build our own tools in some cases. Everything is available through PowerShell, but then you need to build your own scripts to do the more advanced work."
"I would like the possibility of updating the hypervisor by applying security patches."
"The communications setup lags. It does not connect properly so the batching and networking is a bit slow."
"The solution could be more user-friendly."
"This should have better support for multiple network cards and some parts of the GUI should be improved."
"The solution is not flexible."
"This solution needs improvement with the business continuity planning, disaster and recovery management and using centralized data storage."
"It should have the functionality where if I move the mouse away from one screen, the context changes automatically."
"It would be good if we could use Hyper-V Windows subsystems with Linux and VirtualBox on the same instance. Currently, to be able to use VirtualBox, we have to restart the machine into an instance of Windows where Hyper-V is disabled, which is understandably very inconvenient."
"We're working with them to be able to allow the local USB ports to be ported over to the remote desktop, running VirtualBox."
"The only issue I have with Proxmox VE is updating it. You have to manually update it or you have to have a way to update it automatically."
"We find it difficult to find the root cause of the issues."
"Separate physical network for Corosync/Heartbeat should be emphasized in the Quick Start or Getting Started documentation."
"The solution needs to move to the cloud. It would be nice if they made it more robust there."
"It could have more security updates such as when a new threat is coming into market."
"We are facing issues with disk utilization and disk performance."
"The tool needs to add a lot of containers."
"Proxmox VE needs to make a deal with Veeam. I was also unable to make version upgrades. I have also encountered backup problems."
