Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The content management is all about you as you can make the same content for minimal purpose solutions applications.""The vertical scalability, as we can use it across some of our applications.""The tool is a very stable solution with high availability and no information leakage. It has built-in API integration on-site. You can integrate with other components and applications like SAP, Microsoft, Oracle, etc.""The scalability is a valuable feature, that we're able to display our documents to so many people."

More IBM ECM Pros →

"It's pretty easy to learn. Once someone taught me, I was able to navigate it quite easily.""It is well integrated with other Microsoft products.""It's quite easy to use and then of course it is quite well integrated to the rest of Office 365.""The backup capability is one feature I love about OneDrive. I also like how it syncs when you're working offline. Everything is updated once you connect again.""Scalability is good just because it is a cloud-based product.""They have support for integration with a lot of tools.""Being able to use OneDrive as a mapped drive in Windows Explorer is the most valuable feature. Rather than using OneDrive on a browser, you can also open up the Windows Explorer and I can see the file structure in the normal format.""It is good as a central hub for the storage of documents and sharing among team members."

More Microsoft OneDrive Pros →

"It has an easy to distribute administration capability, and can also scale to meet a large number of future needs.""SharePoint has made things easier with the increased functionality for building the portals, microsites, and total integration with Microsoft categories.""What I like about SharePoint is that they keep up with a lot of updates, and they bring out new features. I also like that the system is integrated with the Microsoft 365 suite of apps.""It offers an easy way to store unstructured content (.pdf, .doc, .xls, images) and to tag them with metadata.""Combined reports and data with timeline tracking.""It has good integration with other MS products.""The ability to take Excel files and make them dynamic SharePoint lists with instant reporting capabilities has been a major benefit.""The security feature is valuable."

Cons
"I would recommend not going with ECM 8 and going with FileNet instead. It seems like that is the future of the lower-volume repository. It seems like they are moving away from ECM 8.5 so I think we're going to have some challenges coming up, getting off of that technology.""I would like to see seamless application integration.""The development platform is not local. For example, you need 100 days in IBM, whereas other platforms, like ServiceNow, need only 20 days.""I think it's already getting away from Java applets. A lot of our users struggle with keeping up to date with Java versioning, so a lot of the functions they're doing, like printing, emailing, and even some of the viewing, they're struggling with."

More IBM ECM Cons →

"Support has not been the same since the beginning of COVID lockdowns.""An increase in the capacity of storage in the free version would be nice.""The user interface sometimes fails and when it cannot connect, it does not give the reason why.""Microsoft OneDrive could improve because it doesn't support backing up .PST files, which are Outlook data files, and email archives. This is a substantial setback when it comes to Microsoft OneDrive.""The scalability has room for improvement.""The website could be improved. Sometimes I try to login and the website has issues, I can't retrieve my documents.""I would advice not storage sensitive information since it could be prone to hacking.""An online video player would be great, since sometimes you have to download the video to play it."

More Microsoft OneDrive Cons →

"The company also needs to make sure that their policies are dictating how information is stored and used, instead of letting SharePoint take control.""The initial setup process is not intuitive.""We would like more security features, like automating.""I understand that some functions are lost when you store the information in a file system, so maybe that's a way SharePoint can improve.""I would like it to be more compliant with global regulations. There are certain features which could be included that currently are not there, such as compliance and record management capabilities.""No good process to import emails from several users into a single comprehensive SP repository.""Emails stored now do not display metadata in native format.""Annoyingly, many new Office 365 apps always end up being only US locale for the first year of their life. Microsoft needs to realise that most of their customers are not in the USA."

    Comparison Review

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
