We performed a comparison between IBM Spectrum Protect, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows [EOL], and Veritas NetBackup based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Veeam Software, Zerto, Commvault and others in Backup and Recovery."It provides our customers with the comfort of having reliable enterprise data protection."
"The most valuable features of Spectrum Protect would be the compression and the deduplication."
"Its flexibility is valuable. It is a very flexible solution. There are always more ways than one to do something. It is a software solution, which means you can buy your own hardware and expand it whenever you want. You are not boxed in or locked into something you've bought and outgrown. You can always expand it."
"You can do restores very quickly. You can mount a drive and restore it right from the drive."
"It is more efficient than most traditional backup solutions."
"One of the main things that I like about IBM is the versioning of the data - meaning that we can have multiple versions of a file or directory of a server."
"We can freeze and start databases for consistent backups."
"It scales well. We have grown here in the last year or two, and it has been relatively easy."
"It is a stable solution."
"I love Veeam because it is very easy to work with."
"Application awareness is very good and the speed of this solution is good."
"I don't have any major problems with the agent connectivity with Microsoft applications or Microsoft Azure."
"The initial setup is very straightforward."
"It's straightforward to set up."
"The product is free to use. We don't have to pay for a license."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to navigate inside a backup point to look for a specific folder or data you want to recover."
"I think the support is fine. We haven't had issues with it."
"It is pretty stable. We have one dedicated technician that is taking care of all the data protect. Typically, we have an issue once a month, if that. Or once every two months."
"The VM portal and the CloudCatalyst are two of the solution's most valuable features."
"I like NetBackup's accelerator feature. You can take a full backup with incremental speed and integrate it with block tracking."
"The backup and restore features are helpful."
"We have an issue with the last version on the latest backup of the solution as it is not compatible with Sybase 16.5."
"The documentation is good."
"The solution is stable."
"I find the solution somewhat difficult to use with virtual environments or VMware."
"Ease of use."
"We are still using TSM Manager for many of our projects to administer our platform because the gap was not resolved with the new Operations Center."
"This product comes up against other products available that are marketed better but the other products that it's in competition with are a single product and this is one of IBM products. If it could be marketed as more for competitors I think that's where it comes short."
"The initial setup is complex."
"For the database side, it does not have object level recovery."
"The only thing that I would like to have a little more of is insight in reporting. I find that Spectrum Protect needs a lot of monitoring, and I have to actually log into the servers."
"When it comes to virtualization in IBM it's not perfect."
"I would like to see the capability for remote installation of third party applications added( Like installing WinRar MS Office etc..) , and Firewall for servers."
"A feature I would like to see is universal restore. At the moment, restoration can only be smooth on the same hardware. Let's say you have a server and you back it up with Veeam Agent, in case it fails or crashes. If you later buy a new server because the same one isn't available on the market anymore, there's a high chance that Windows will not boot up if you restore from the Veeam backup because the hardware is now different. Acronis has the universal restore feature, so it will work with generic drivers and you can restore Windows in any dissimilar hardware. As far as I know, Veeam doesn't have this feature yet."
"Troubleshooting is very hard."
"I would like to have more flexibility in terms of reporting details about the backup."
"If they could let you can do replication to physical servers - a backup from physical servers and a replication to physical servers - that will be better."
"Some customers have Oracle databases and Veeam does support back up of Oracle databases."
"I would like to have a more automated installation process."
"The stability of this solution needs to be improved."
"Some of the hardware is out of support."
"It would be helpful, in future releases, if the solution could add WORM (Write Once Read Many) support right within the product."
"The solution is not that stable because it has to be monitored and administered every day. The stability could be improved."
"GUI needs to be more user-friendly."
"There could be granular control over metadata components, specifically in the context of JSON data for the product."
"We want a solution that can be scaled-out because our data is growing very quickly, and we aren't able to back it up quickly. It takes one or two days, which is a problem. It is very slow. We just use one backup server. We want another solution with maybe a backup server cluster to back up more data in one day. We want a solution that can be scaled-out to back up our data quickly and efficiently."
"I also think they could improve the reporting. They use a web-based software application OpsCenter for the reporting and I see that they haven't made any changes in years."
"The solution costs too much."
