Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Scalability is great. One of the best features of NetScaler is that it can scale out.""The program is easy to install and to set up.""What I like most about Citrix NetScaler is its stability, and I didn't see a lot of issues with it.""The load balancing feature and the fact that you can do context switching in the WAF are the most valuable. We majorly use it for load balancing, but we also use it for context switching in the WAF. It is also robust and very easy to work with and manage.""The solution was very easy to deploy.""Global load balancing between data centers.""I like the monitoring ability as it enables me to identify when an internal (load-balanced) resource is having issues before it becomes a problem in production.""HTTP analysis and action. We have a lot of custom web applications that sometimes require custom header insertions. Some of these custom apps are external and, via the content switching, we can use one IP and leverage various back-end web app servers."

More Citrix NetScaler Pros →

"The main feature that we use is GSLB (Global Server Load Balancing). GSLB makes the customer's network more reliable by scaling applications across multiple datacenters. GSLB as a disaster recovery solution can direct traffic based on site availability.""Content caching and content compression are good features.""I like the solution's load balance with DNS intelligence.""Ease of use in deploying and having it up and running requires minimal knowledge.""The most valuable feature is its simplicity.""Fortinet FortiADC is a good product because each and every piece of content is monitored by it.""Although FortiADC has multiple features that I like, the global DNS is the most helpful. It is primarily useful for customers with huge environments and at least two data centers. FortiADC can act as your DNS server. It can check which data center has the lowest latency, and route traffic to that one. It's an intelligent DNS.""From a technical perspective, it is the most scalable device from Fortinet."

More Fortinet FortiADC Pros →

"Loadbalancer is easy to use. It performs well, with low latency.""The user interface precludes need to be well versed with Linux IPVS command line. This make it easy for junior team members to participate in managing load balancing needs.""I found scalability in Loadbalancer.org valuable.""Existing customers are trying to migrate from the physical F5 load balancer to the AVI load balancer because it is scalable and easily managed.""The support we have received from Loadbalancer.org has been good.""Loadbalancer.org is less complex than Citrix.""We can more easily set up a test environment, because you can easily configure your forms. It makes it more flexible for us, to convert our test environment to a production environment, without having to change DNSs on the outside. You just configure the forms on the inside. So without changing the actual endpoint for the end user, we can create completely different networks in the background.""Most important for us that it makes sure that the load is distributed and that we always have access to the end servers."

More Loadbalancer.org Pros →

Cons
"Citrix NetScaler has been recently acquired by another company and the support has been negatively impacted, the solution is at its end of life. The support for the solution could improve. The sales team needs to be improved.""The main areas for improvement would be around documentation and support. If a feature can be used in two or three ways, show that feature being used in all of those ways. Documentation seems to only cover the primary use case and leaves you to either run through trial and error or consult the user community. In terms of support, I have never actually had them solve any of my issues. I have always solved them myself and then provided the resolution to support.""The solution should be able to scale more effectively than it does.""We had some bugs in the previous firmware. These were not big issues, but more testing on the firmware would be key to happier customers.""The WAF component needs to be simplified so that it is easier to use.""Manageability and adaptability can also be challenging for end customers.""Overall the price of Citrix ADC could be more competitive.""In terms of what could be improved, I would say the user interface because sometimes it can be complicated."

More Citrix NetScaler Cons →

"The solution’s pricing could be improved.""Fortinet has some drawbacks, and it can be a bit challenging to scale.""I think it would be helpful if Fortinet put more video examples on their cookbook site.""The product’s price could be reduced. Also, some of its features need to be more advanced.""The initial setup could be simplified.""It would be good if they built in a fully functional web application firewall.""The L7 Persistent load-balancing algorithm has not worked for me after having tested it many times with my customer's in-house application. I'd like to suggest that the company make sure that all load-balancing algorithms work properly with most applications, even those that are in-house apps.""Setup could be easier. The company's homework is to redesign those menus to configure with the smallest number of steps."

More Fortinet FortiADC Cons →

"Compared to the physical products, the solution's throughput is a little less.""Loadbalancer.org's complexity could be reduced.""It doesn't have the bonding capability feature.""The configuration is somewhat complicated. Someone who does not know the solution may find this challenging.""Possibly a more graphical overview page (with colors) to give a two second overview to see if everything is working fine.""It would be great if there was a way to gain access to the graphing data, to create custom reports. If we had a way to use the graphing data, we could use it to present certain information to our client, such as the uptime status for their service.""The configuration is somewhat complicated. Someone who does not know the solution may find this challenging.""Originally we had some stability issues with it, so they replaced it with a new box and it's fine."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It's not for startups or SOHO."
  • "Costly product and complicated licensing."
  • "It all depends on the features that will be used and the number of accesses."
  • "It is true that it is a bit pricey compared to newer technologies coming to the market. For example, A10 is a load balancer that does everything that Citrix can and it does a lot more than what NetScaler does when it comes to the security space, and their prices are so cheap. Every box comes with its own license and support built into it. When you compare that with NetScaler, you have to buy licenses separately, you have to buy a support agreement that is going to be separate. A small NetScaler, even if it is a VPX which is a virtual server, could cost you close to $150,000 to $200,000 dollars. So the pricing is really high."
  • "We have been evaluating F5, Citrix, and other ADC products. Citrix is the most expense of all of them."
  • "We are quite happy with price. It's not too high."
  • "I do not have any experience with the pricing of the product."
  • "You get the value for your money. There aren't any hidden fees."
  • More Citrix NetScaler Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The price is competitive"
  • "Compared to F5, FortiADC pricing is better."
  • "The solution could be more cost-effective."
  • "They offer a perpetual license."
  • "The solution is less expensive than F5 or Imperva and is the most reasonably priced option available."
  • "I believe the price is good. It's fair. There are no extra costs."
  • "The product has affordable pricing."
  • "The solution's pricing is an issue and should be improved."

  • "It's worth the cost. It's not cheap, but it's a good solution. If you're looking for a good solution, this is a good solution. Is it cheap? No. Is it worth the money? Yes, I think it is."
  • "I think it’s very affordable."
  • "It was easy to upgrade the license for unlimited clusters and servers. Pricing is fair."
  • "We've got an unlimited license, which doesn't costs that much compared to other vendors, and we don't have to buy it again."
  • "It filled a requirement for our project, and it did so at lesser cost than their competitors."
  • "These guys make their pricing scheme really easy."
  • "It is inexpensive, and even their “unlimited” version, the VA MAX is still far cheaper than competitors."
  • "I love that they do not price on some arbitrary throughput rating where you are guessing at what the load balancer is going to handle."

    Reviews from Real Users

Citrix NetScaler is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are that it is easy to use, is robust, and has good load balancing.

A Senior Citrix Engineer at Troye, says, “The web application firewalling component is probably the most powerful feature as it can identify attacks on the network at an application level which is quite important. There is also good functionality where we use IP reputation and geofencing to mitigate threats from the outside world.”

“The feature that I have found most valuable is its load balancing,” explains a Security Consultant at a tech services company.

Timur G., Team Head of Network Security at DOM.RF, writes, “The most valuable feature of Citrix ADC is its ease of use.”

Another PeerSpot reviewer, Nirav S., Technical Solutions Architect at MindTree, mentions, "Compared to other solutions, Citrix ADC is much more robust in terms of the native integration to cloud platforms. It is far more robust from an operational point of view as well."

    Reviews from Real Users

“Loadbalancer.org is less complex than Citrix. In some cases, our customers do not have an engineer on staff who can support this device. These customers have a large number of Linux engineers but don't have the money. We suggested using Loadbalancer.org and other open-source tools. Many customers are of different sizes and have different budgets. Loadbalancer.org has everything that is needed.” - Artem M., System Engineer at CROC

“We use Loadbalancer for balancing loads in our main application. Loadbalancer is easy to use. It performs well, with low latency.” - Walid M., Network and Security Engineer at a logistics company
