We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Inbound and outbound traffic analysis, rule creation wizard, and the GUI portal are among the key features.""The solution is stable.""One of the big benefits of the product is that it allows you to manage big environments with fewer resources.""The ability to be deployed and supported remotely is valuable.""The antivirus protection or malware protection has been great.""The most valuable feature for us is the ability to offer firewall support to our clients.""It provides a lot of functionality adhering to the current trends.""The encryption and the security standards are valuable."

"FortiGate is very simple to manage and easy to use.""It's inexpensive compared to some of the other technology out there.""The secure web gateway module and the application control module are valuable. HA operations are very easy.""Their proxy-based inspection is responsive and secure.""Our project needs to link two sides through the internet. One of these was in Cairo and the other in another city. We used FortiGate as the integrating solution between the two locations, i.e. the Fortinet 30E & 100E.""The security features are about the best that I've seen anywhere.""I only deal with it from a security analyst's point of view. I don't really get into the features of the actual FortiGate. From the security point of view, it works, and it does its job.""Fortinet FortiGate's reliability is valuable."

More Fortinet FortiGate Pros →

"It’s easy to integrate the solution with our network infrastructure.""The web GUI is easy to use.""The product's initial setup phase was easy.""The IPS module is my favorite because of the security advantage reached with a few clicks and its automatic updates.""The pricing of the solution is good.""The most valuable features are network security, VLAN, network protection, and encryption are very valuable to us.""The VM it's very quick for deployment. If we need to have a POC for a customer, if we don't have any hardware physically at our premises, at our store, in our office, we can download the VM from Fortinet and install all the VM to their environment in order to run it. If we have a customer that says "let's start tomorrow" we are able to do that in a way that's not possible with a hardware version.""There is an interesting possibility of building a tunnel to a firewall from access points. We use this feature for small branch offices with one to two employees with access to central RDP servers."

Cons
"We would like to see a solution that is focused on container deployment, which is very important right now.""The biggest issue that I have with this solution is that it is not super intuitive. Once you know what to do, things make sense, but you can't just open the program and start doing things. It would be great if there was a little bit more guided usage inside the program.""I would like to see the connection improved.""It's a little bit complex in terms of handling. If you implement a change, there is a specific point where you have to commit it. It's not like you just push a button and it's always committed. If you don't know to check whether your commit command has been executed or not... that is something Barracuda needs to work on.""The technical manuals, at times, have images that don't match the actual screens and are not always as clear as they could be on the configuration.""I would like to see a more user-friendly dashboard and an easier interface.""The price is a bit higher than other vendors.""The interface should be more user-friendly and it should be easier to configure."

More Barracuda CloudGen Firewall Cons →

"The ease of use could be improved.""I don't really have anything negative to say as far as Fortinet firewalls are concerned. If anything, they can support a user a little bit better. They can stop being so time-sensitive about how much time the support call has taken, and they can help you do it yourself.""I would suggest that Fortinet add sandboxing to their solution.""The routing capability on the FortiGate devices has room for improvement.""The stability of Fortinet FortiGate could improve.""One issue that I have had is that sometimes I need to monitor the traffic, so I need to filter it according to the user and which user is using it the most. I experience a bottleneck most of the time, particularly at the peak time when the number of contracts and users are at maximum.""I would like to see better pricing in the next release, as well as a simplification of the installation.""The solution could have licensing fees reduced in the future."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The pricing is expensive.""The user interface (UI) and the performance of interface both need improvement.""It has a monitoring tool, but it could be improved.""Price-wise, it could be slightly better, however, if you compared it to other makes and models of equal category, it is generally cheaper.""With FortiGate, we sometimes encounter bugs in various operating systems.""The price and licensing of the solution can be better.""It is a very good product, and it is good at standing by itself. It can maybe have a little bit of integration with other products, but it is not that important for most use cases.""The tool is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is a product with a very transparent model of licensing. In the sense of hidden expenses, they do not exist with this model. "
  • "We evaluated a lot of different options. We concluded that Barracuda NG Firewall provided the most features for an exemplary price. "
  • "My advice is to try and evaluate it (Barracuda offers a trial period of one month)."
  • "Pricing is good. Licensing is pretty much automatic if using Control Center."
  • "Pricing and licensing are fine. It's worth the value because every four years, if I buy any other product, I have to replace my hardware. But with Barracuda I get a free hardware upgrade. Today I'm using Xbox. After four years I can take another Xbox or a Ybox."
  • "It would be nice if the pricing and licensing offered for less."
  • "Purchasing through AWS Marketplace was good. We did it because it was easy."
  • "In general, it tends to be cheaper than most solutions."

  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The pricing and licensing are not as expensive as its competitors."
  • "It is an expensive solution if you are migrating from an open source solution."
  • "If you are in a licensed solution, like Cisco or Palo Alto, it is cheaper. I do recommend using it with a license, because it is a security solution and it needs updates."
  • "The basic pricing in Austria is OK, but asking for special offers, e.g., NPOs, NGOs, trade up, and/or trade in, is always useful."
  • "It is on par with what you receive. It can be expensive upfront."
  • "It would be nice to have the ability to extend FortiGuard subscriptions at a reasonable yearly cost versus a bulk three year pricing."
  • "The price is expensive compared with other vendors, like Cisco and Huawei."
  • "The best part of Fortinet is the license is bundled together, so it is easy to use and apply."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application.
