We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I see the most value in the UCS portion. I love Cisco UCS.""All of our main applications run on this solution, and it has done a stellar job.""The most significant benefit is storage flexibility. FlexPod is a reference design to build on and add the appropriate resources you need for your workloads. That's what differentiates it from something like HCI, where you have to buy certain size pieces when you want to expand.""A valuable feature of the FlexPod solution is that it is all one architecture and I can call one number and get support for Cisco and NetApp without having to jump through open TAC (Technical Assistance Center) cases and do multiple things to get issues addressed.""The product is very stable and it does what it needs to do.""UCS Profiles enable recovering a physical server in less than 15 minutes.""The most valuable thing for me is the shorter time to market.""From the integration standpoint, it is a lot easier to integrate than a lot of people initially felt. Being able to leverage either block or file capabilities of the storage is something that has been beneficial."

"Huawei FusionStorage does well in its basic functions and offers broad utility.""Provides easy access to our data.""The product has a very simple GUI-based management platform and it is very simple to use. There is a very easy step-by-step configuration procedure that guides you through, and you can configure it very easily.""In cases where system interruptions occur, it enables rapid restoration, ensuring a prompt return to normal service levels."

More Huawei FusionStorage Pros →

"It's an integrated box Mac solution, so it's a plug and play. The deployment and build is pre-made and ready to deploy. It makes it easy to apply.""Some of the key features are the ease of operation and access, without constraining actions. The tool is available to actually move things around, do things quickly quickly.""UCS Manager worked well for net/blade management and has allowed fairly easy use of dedicated bare-metal blades.""Systems run solidly.""Access to VMs is now faster due to the centralized management console.""Capability for scale and growth within a single rack brings strong possibilities for capacity planning.""VMware NSX: Provides the ability for our organisation to deliver true DR.""We have seen measurable increases in our system performance. Those increases have been directly measurable in application performance and the delivery of critical business information to our users."

Cons
"Maybe in the future, they could include the HCI solution into the mix.""We would like one-click upgrades.""FlexPod should focus more on automation. Integrating an automation tool with FlexPod would enable customers to leverage automation capabilities.""It could be more innovative.""Not a perfect ten because it could use better integration on the network side between UCS and the switching layer. The fact that LACP is not supported on UCS blades isn't so great. It would be nice if it was.""I would like more support for different platforms, possibly different database platforms. I don't know if it supports Oracle today, but that would be a big improvement.""There could be room for improvement in terms of offering more flexibility in CBD options.""It takes a very sophisticated group of people to run and maintain NetApp and Cisco products."

More FlexPod XCS Cons →

"Their cloud services could be improved.""I hope for improvements in the product's processing ability and performance.""The initial setup and installation is not that straightforward. It should be made easier and the time to install should be reduced.""The product needs improvement in terms of affordability."

More Huawei FusionStorage Cons →

"OEM services requires too much planning and low availability of certified engineers.""The integration with other vendors' products needs to be looked at. It's not as flexible as we would like it to be.""I would like to see them improve their switching infrastructure and rely on Cisco configurations. They are a bit more complex and technical, but result in a slightly reduced cost in terms of switching on the network side of it.""The user control could be more advanced. They should work to improve this in future releases.""RCM upgrades are painful.""RCM upgrades were not scripted, and you needed to roll on your own. We were led to believe this would be otherwise.""Troublesome relationships with VCE at the beginning of our use came undone quickly after we went live.""Tighter alignment could simplify and speed up the configuration and delivery process."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
  • "It seems very cost effective once it's in place, and it's easy to expand and easy to add capacity without a lot of extra money."
  • "If your company really needs to be up 100% of the time, and you need to do a private data center, I don't know if I could realistically actually recommend another blueprint."
  • "Anytime that you are buying any storage make sure you understand storage. Do not just buy storage based on what somebody sells you in terms of IO or throughput."
  • "Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
  • "As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
  • "Storage is very expensive. To buy MIC cards and additional storage either on-prem or in the cloud, the IT department does not have money for it, so you need a more niche product or a more flexible way to store your data. That is the benefit that you get from this product."
  • "We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."
  • More FlexPod XCS Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It is expensive but might be optimal based on the partnership."
  • More Huawei FusionStorage Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Strive for a consolidated ELA."
  • "Related to tech support: I believe it is too expensive."
  • "I would not say the pricing is not good value. It is still on the expensive side, near the top-end of cost compared to what's available now. Also, the licensing has to be improved. There has to be a clear definition of the licensing from the initial set-up so the customer knows what they are paying for, without being hit later on with extra licensing. The licensing definitions should be clearer and, perhaps, have one set of licenses rather than multiple licenses."
  • "It is not cheap."
  • "Vblock appears from the first while to be very expensive. There are more items you cannot see in the BOQ: customer service, support, delivery short time, and highly experienced VCE engineers."
  • "I think the pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum. There could be some adjustments that could be made there. Regarding licensing, watch compatibility with external products that you run on Vblock. It has got to be properly architected, otherwise, you will run into licensing issues."
  • "The paid support for Vblock is expensive."
  • "Vblock is priced at a premium because people don't want the headache of managing and deploying different products."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
